Tigers agree to $2.5 million deal with Mesa

December 11, 2006

ASSOCIATED PRESS
Reliever Jose Mesa and the Detroit Tigers agreed Monday to a $2.5 million, one-year contract.

The 40-year-old Mesa was 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA with the Colorado Rockies this year. He was ninth in the NL with a career-high 79 appearances.

"He brings a veteran presence and a wealth of experience in a variety of roles to help strengthen our bullpen," Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said.

Mesa is 78-106 with a 4.27 ERA with a 320 saves in an 18-year major league career.

Zumaya and Rodney can learn a lot from this guy. And, if there is an injury its great to have a guy with 320 career saves in the pen.

The price seemed a little high for Mesa. As far as the young guys learning, why not from a guy like Todd Jones?

It's not like our starting staff with Kenny Rogers being about the only veteran guy around.

I think it's just insurance for them. Ideally I would've preferred a veteran lefty. He'll be good for a inning's worth of spot duty but it could be what the bullpen needs from time to time.
