Naw, Pam, not to worry. I'm not a full-time jazz snob, at all. Heck, I'm with Ggores about Live At Leeds; at least once a year, I absolutely must hear the Young Man Blues-Substitute-Summertime Blues opening from the original LP version. I just can't listen to the same old shit all of the time. In fact, the same ennui that led me away from rock and toward jazz is, at times, now sneaking into my jazz-ear and causing me to crave something more. Thankfully, we have WRCJ 90.9 FM, which is handy since I don't have a library of classical music. As for the U2 record (which I still have not fully digested,) I'm not suggesting that I know, better than they know, what they should do, but I truly wonder what kind of record they might make if they just stumbled into a studio with their instruments, one recording engineer, and maybe a four-track set-up. I know they like-- and may even be addicted to-- having Eno, Lanois, & Lillywhite fuck around, fuck around, and fuck around some more with the sound, and I'm not arguing against the results, but the truth is that, even when I'm enjoying the over-all sound, I confess that there are times when I really can't even tell what the fuck I am hearing. Those of you who have listened to a lot of post-Rattle And Hum U2 know EXACTLY what I mean. Sometimes it is a dense, multi-layered thicket of sound, and-- what was that? A piano? Or was it Adam Clayton playing high notes on his bass? No, that can't be... Adam only plays the lowest two strings... |

Hot Rocks 1964-1971. Now, look, I am bummed and sort of pee'd that I am missing THE PARADE today (but for good reasons). So, about U2: I used to really be a big fan, and yesterday spun one of my all time favorite discs by them, "Under A Blood Red Sky", it friggin rocks! But I stopped being a U2 fan when Joshua Tree came out. Go figure. My young son accurately jokes that, over the years, Bono has become that which he used to mock. Heh. Yeah, pretty good jab, kid. I will give credit where credit is due, though, and perhaps one of the coolest stories I've ever heard. A friend seen U2 at the Silverdome, maybe it was the Zoo TV tour, I dunno. But at some point during the concert, Bono said that Detroit is the only place in the world that knew every single word to every single U2 song. He then set his microphone down onto the stage and let the crowd sing the whole show. I had a similar experience, but it was at the Sabbath reunion concert, back in, ummmm... 98 or 99. \m/ |

I love that Neko Case. Great stuff. My husband is a big U2 guy, so it's on frequently. I don't intellectualize them too much, when I do, I begin to really hate Bono. I'd rather dance. A CD I'll probably buy this week is BPA, a project of Fatboy Slim. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =6hi99JdeBeY |

I'm listing to an interesting jazz CD featuring none other than our own "Dr. Death"..Jack Kevorkian and a group called the Morpheus Quintet. Title of this CD is "A Very Still Life". There were only 5000 copies made..I have number 0419. Dr. Kevorkian plays some piano and some flute. And he's a pretty good artist, too...one of his paintings graces the cover of the CD. I knew about his paintings, but not his musical talent..he's pretty good. |
