Just got done watching "Across the Universe". Great interpretations of old Beatles songs--especially "Come Together" by Joe Cocker and "I am the Walrus" by Bono.

I visit a wonderful site called Daytrotter (I think I've linked before) but they have a wealth of free and legal downloads
http://www.daytrotter.com/song sdown
I downloaded a bunch yesterday, and am currently listening to one of my favorite bands that I could not see last week in concert, Okkervil River. Next up Elvis Perkins, Jay Bennett and Jolie Holland.

Here's a different one for you: listened to a dozen Doris Day tunes on my ipod while reading the interesting article about her in the current issue of Vanity Fair.

Doris Day has a very beautiful rich voice.

Mark Langegan and Isobel Campbell - Ballad of the Broken Seas. Must pick up the pace a little or I'll fall back asleep.

"Polish Funk", a compilation that came out last year. Some funky moments so far, but nothing mind blowing yet.
By the way, the Racontours, Sadies and Black Lips are playing a show here together in a few weeks. Just a few steps from where I live, no less. Might be worth the drive to some folks around here...

Can any body link me to the "Sayonara song" a top 40 hit of around 1965 (give or take a year). I've had that song with the Japanese lyrics in my head only, all of that time. Searches turn up mostly unrelated stuff.

Thanks

Sknutson, did you listen to "Secret Love"?

I listened really closely to that one once through Sennheisers, and my god, I thought her voice, phrasing, emotion, everything was magnificent.

Thanks anyway Pam, I'm on dial-up, and that would be like watching grass grow. The one I'm looking for, was a male singer doing a modern style traditional folk song I think.

The song reached the top of the sales charts in the United States in 1963, and was the only Japanese language song to do so. In total it sold over 13 million copies internationally

That tune was a hit when my parents took me to Long Beach Cal. in 63-64, to visit my brother stationed in the Navy there.
I would be stationed at that same Navy base 12 years later. So that song has memories. Never heard it again, even on oldie's stations.
Long live the 'Pike'.

I've just discovered Sufjan Stevens thanks to His great version of "Ring Them Bells" from the "I'm Not There" soundtrack. And low and behold he was born in Detroit.

"Abidjan", a thumping instrumental offa Ray Barretto's "Hard Hands" album from around 1968. I'm trying to decide what to play on the radio tomorrow night, to combine the passing of Albert Hoffmann, his first 'planned' trip on a bike, Bike Month coming up, and some Mexican-American jams beyond Santana, Malo, El Chicano and other well known artists- to mention Cinco de Mayo for fun, as few people in my city have heard of it. I think most Latinos in Toronto are Salvadoran, but I was intrigued by the history of Cinco de Mayo even though I seem to have mixed up Napoleon's, embarrassingly enough for a history major!
Anyone wanna name some Mexican-American musicians beyond the ones I mentioned above? I know Ray Barretto was Puerto Rican-American, but the devastating track "Acid" seems too tempting nto use to bridge themes here. The 2 lp's "Acid" and "Hard Hands" are on 1 compact disc on the British Demon label. Nice sound! Dunno if the guys who bought the Fania catalogue a year or so ago have started reissuing old Fania label rarities, but this plan was discussed in Wax Poetics magazine not too long ago.

A friend sent me this link. I've been listening to this. I especially like "Mercy" and "Warwick Avenue" - I'm going to pick up her CD this week. I like her voice. Click on Video at the top, there's 3 choices there.

Thanks, Pam... I'm passing on Ozomatli although I saw them put on a really good show 6 years or so ago... Los Lobos I was planning on, I don't really like much Freddie Fender and long lost my one lp of his. I forgot Cossa Nostra (sic, I think) are a hot Mexican band that relocated to the U.S. in the early 70's, just picked out some old psychedelic stuff from the worlds of rock and funk and I'm now debating what psychedelic influenced reggae might be cool. I might have an other crack on Youtube when I hit a better computer/ connection later.
Right now, I'm playing "Nigeria funk" which is a super hot compilation.

They aren't really Mexican-American but they did have some guest stars who are on their last album, Rock en Espanol.

Los Straightjackets are from Nashville, they do a Mexican schtick with the wrestling masks and broken Spanish banter. I was being facetious.
