From the article:
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele’s series of gaffes turned into something more serious Thursday, as leaders of a pillar of the GOP—the anti-abortion movement—shifted into open revolt over comments in an interview with the men’s magazine GQ.

Steele called abortion an “individual choice” and opposed a constitutional ban on abortion in the Feb. 24 interview, which appeared online Wednesday night. He echoed the language of the abortion rights movement and appeared to contradict his own heated assertions during his campaign for chairman that he is a committed soldier in the anti-abortion movement.

While he issued a statement Thursday affirming his opposition to abortion and his support for a constitutional amendment banning it, the damage appeared to be done as leading social conservatives publicly attacked the embattled chairman.

And the beat goes on.

Pissing off the extremist faction of the GOP, that being the pro-life fundie fanatics, was a monumental blunder on Mr. Steele's part, IMO.

Dissing Rush and angering his dittohead army is bad enough, but a few of the most extreme wingnuts have a history of fomenting anti-abortion violence (bombing abortion clinics, ect..)

This bodes well for the future of the Conservative movement. Finally telling the religious fundamentalist whack jobs to go fuck themselves and getting back to what the Conservative ideology is supposed to be about. Kudos to Mr. Steele.

WIthin the party, this will hurt him. Personally, Abortion is a catch 22 and unresolvable situation from a practical perspective. Philosophically, however, it is pretty clear cut. It would have been politically wiser for Steele to express the party line philosophical case (abortion/murder of innocents, is wrong), but, just as all other Republicans have done until this point, leave the laws (post Roe vs Wade) as they are, and let the courts (supreme) deal with the interpretation.

Yeah, sure, JL. In your dreams.

A newsflash for you - the "fundamentalist whack jobs" that you speak of OWN the GOP. It's their money supporting it, and it's their church members doing all of the grunt work in the field. The only question is how many days (maybe weeks if he is lucky) it will be before Steele is booted down the road by them.

Meantime, dream on.

For once, I tend to agree with Alan. This will hurt Steele, and for all of the wrong reasons.

Be careful JL, once you start talking sense, even if for the wrong reasons, you are open to conversion.

Thinking can do that.

Steele has balls of steel. Ideology aside, admirable.

Don't get me wrong, I believe what I said. I just don't believe the Republican party will ever agree. And as long as they continue pandering to the religious fanatics, they won't get votes from me.

I don't believe that you would be in their corner if they stopped pandering to religious interests. If that were true, you would be a Libertarian...are you?
