He did the famous Obama poster currently in legal dispute with AP:

He seems related to http://obeygiant.com/.

What else do we know about him? Sincerely.

This one is going to set some precedents in copyright law, hopefully.
quote:

Mannie Garcia has been identified as the photographer who produced the now iconic American image of Barack Obama. The image, taken at the National Press Club in 2006 of then junior Senator Barack Obama, was a part of work he was doing with the Associated Press. The image, at right, and with the inset poster of the image as it was used for both the HOPE and PROGRESS posters. This image, that Shepard Fairey used as the basis for his artwork which has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue for Fairey, and others. So, we wanted to know from Garcia directly, what was going on for him.

I'll try to find the NPR interviews regarding this.

Short story, Fairey used Garcia's photograph which was used by AP. All claim the copyright, therefore the money.

It will be an interesting court testof fair usage.

Apparently, yes. He explains it here.

I've always admired artists who can have an effect on so many people. Trtl comes to mind. I assumed Shepherd intended to have the same effect on everyone who saw his work but apparently not, according to that explanation.
