"BOTHELL, Wash. -- For 15 years, Beehive Espresso thrived as a family-friendly coffee stand. But with many people cutting back on spending, sales slumped."

"It got to the point I was really faced with a tough option. I could cut back hours, I could let some employees go, or I could try and do what we could," said owner Alan Tagle."

"So when the economy tanked, Tagle thought sex might still sell."

"We decided to go bikini," he said."

When family friendly is no good for the bottom line

Perhaps Beehive Expresso should also change their name to say, Cupfulla Joe & Eyefulla Ho.

Hmmm...Guess that the owner of Beehive Expresso decided on adding a bee-like professional color combo of yellow tops and black bikini bottoms for his coffee-klatch of babes.

Look out Hooters!!

There's a similar joint in Waterford, on Dixie Hwy just north of Telegraph. If only I liked coffee enough...

What does he have to offer the straight female/gay male demographic? Or has he determined they don't drink coffee in his town? This strategy could drive away more customers than it attracts.

You really think it is a good business idea to pander only to one segment of the coffee buying market? Money is money. He should be trying to attract everybody.

I was reading the comments after the article and there were an amount of people saying they would not buy from this guy because of the bikini thing. I guess it's a gamble to see if the gang from Hooters outnumbers the customers he is losing.

Well, it's really the business owner's decision to make, isn't it? No one is forcing anyone to buy coffee from him!

Very important point that seems to be missed here:
quote:

There are 12 coffee stands and shops along the small strip of highway where the Beehive does business,...

That's a lot of competition.

And there are other bikini coffee places already too, according to what I read in the comments.

Yes, obviously. I'm just questioning whether it will really be a good marketing strategy.

I read the comments, it seems there are other bikini coffee places in existence, but I don't think they are any of the 12 other on that stretch of road. The comments seem to be broken down pretty evenly between those who are morally offended and those saying "so what".

I do like the comment about how it is the sexual repression of this country that spawned a billion dollar porn industry though. Eeek, the human body! How offensive, run! (and by run, I mean into the privacy of your house where you will look at the same thing with guilt-filled lust).

There were also those that share my view that instead of going for the cheesy "sex sells" idea, he should be trying to appeal to all customers. I wouldn't be interested in spending money at a place that so obviously is not interested in my business.

Time will tell, as well as the inevitable diluting of the market there when other coffee stands imitate his idea, and perhaps one will add young guys in speedos for the ladies and gay men.

My first FT job as a young teen was as a sales clerk for the fur dept at Saks in the New Center area, almost all of the career salesmen and the well known fashion designers that visited from NY and Europe were flaming gays, and I was propositioned relentlessly for the year or so that I worked there.

Even so, I don't have any lingering hate for gay men as a result, since I was straight and liked the ladies, and one of the perks of working there was getting more than just an eyeful of the stunningly gorgeous female models who did runway shows and private modeling for our customers.
