Japanese automakers' global production plunges; domestic sales seen sinking to 32-year low

Tuesday March 24, 2009, 6:08 am EDT
Buzz up! Print TOKYO (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday its global production plunged by nearly half in February from a year earlier, while Honda and Nissan reported similarly grim figures highlighting the woes facing Japanese automakers.

Separately, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association said auto sales in Japan for the fiscal year through March 2010 are expected to drop 8 percent from the previous year to what would be a 32-year low of 4.297 million vehicles.

The last time domestic sales were lower was in fiscal 1977, when 4.23 million vehicles were sold, it said.

Toyota's production figures -- which include Daihatsu Motor Co., which makes small cars, and truckmaker Hino Motors -- showed global production for February totaled tumbled 49.6 percent to 434,179 vehicles. Toyota's production in Japan for the month declined 56.4 percent on-year to 207,743 vehicles.

Honda Motor Co.'s global production in February declined 42.7 percent from the same month a year ago to 190,680 vehicles. Its Japanese output fell 48.4 percent to 54,748 vehicles.

Monthly worldwide production for Nissan Motor Co. in February declined 51.3 percent to 156,864 vehicles, while its production in Japan plunged 68.8 percent. Nissan is allied with Renault SA of France.

Mazda Motor Corp.'s global production fell 54.6 percent to 57,642 vehicles for the month, while Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s output dropped 65 percent to 45,048 vehicles from the previous year.

This is due to those overpaid Japanese union auto workers & designing/building cars nobody wants. Maybe they should start producing hybrids or economy cars instead.

Production must go down when sales are down...otherwise inventory will grow and be a financial anchor.

I realize that. My "conclusion" is pure sarcasm employing the same logic Senators from Redneck Nation used in regards to the U.S. Auto Industry.

I just had a conversation where someone actually put the blame on American automakers for making too many pickup trucks at the time when sales were high for...pick up trucks.

Zero understanding of basic business principles...typical liberal mindset.

Bats,

When someone is walking their dog and does not clean up the poop, is that "liberal" to you? It sounds like a catchword for everything that you happen to disagree with. Kinda silly, eh?

O.

Same goes for the SUVs. They couldn't sell them fast enough, so of course they cranked them out one after another. They were building cars that people wanted. It would have been stupid not too. However, they were very shortsighted as to what would happen if oil prices skyrocketed (they've been up and down for over a decade now) and didn't get their small car development in gear adequately enough. Small cars were selling as well during the SUV craze, but the Big 3 basically let the Japanese and other foreign automakers have that end of the business. But to say they shouldn't have been making large vehicles is stupid. It's more like they should have not cornered themselves into one segment of the market and should have been developing good small cars as well as whatever else was selling at the time.

I knew this would ultimately bite them in the ass years ago. The Big 3 were more concerned with short term profits and such, and apparently didn't plan for the long term.

However, the economic downturn probably could not have been planned for. It's actually kind of fun to see the Japanese automakers take it in the shorts like the U.S. automakers are.

Agreed, except for the short sighted part. They have a robust and full line of products from big to small. They produce based on current demand, and shift as rapidly as possible when the demand shifts. Nobody did a better job of rapidly changing production. It so happens that Japanese automakers happened to be more successful in the small car market than they were in SUVs/trucks...pure luck (good or bad, depending on demand).
