I have been blessed with a great memory, and cursed with a love of the Lions. I'm putting a little bit of my heart and a little bit of my youth into this...so come along if you will. I was 11 in 1980, and became a fanatic as a first year fan. Remember opening day...Billy's debut? 41-20 at LA...I remember the dust of the infield and Billy showed us that move...4 TDs that day I believe. Thanksgiving 80, remember the Bears returned the kickoff of OT for a TD? I cried...no shit. 1981: I remember opening day...we were in Frankenmouth and I listened on the way up...24-17 over the niners at the dome. Hipple makes his debut on MNF and lights up Chicago. Remember week 6...27-24 over Dallas? That was when Eddie Murray hit that field goal as time expired...the Lions had 12 men on the field and the refs missed the call. I remember listening to the radio in the parking lot of the K-mart at 9 & Harper. Remember the last game of the season. It was vs. Tampa at the dome and a win put us in the playoffs. Doug Williams hit Kevin House with that bomb late to lift Tampa. It was House or Bell? What I am sure of is that I was buried in a coat closet with a transistor radio at a wedding reception. 1982: Damm...like it was yesterday. Remember Thanksgiving? 13-6 loss to the Giants. We were inside the Giant 20 late...Danielson's pass got picked by LT at the goal line and he sprinted untouched down the sideline 97 yards for the TD. It was between 97 and 99 anyway. I was at my grandmothers in the UP...Nisula, west of Baraga. It was my school science project getting reception all day on that 1960's era clunker...and then it was the Lawrence Taylor show. Damm. Remember 1982 was the strike shortened season...we went 4-5 and made the playoffs! We then proceded to get spanked at Washington 31-7. 1983: Thanksgiving 45-3 over the Mark Malone QB'ed Steelers. Week 11 in the Astrodome...I cant remember the score, but we lost and Billy Sims was livid. He was turning over tables on the sidelines. Remember that footage of Billy sweeping a table full of gatorade cups with his arm? Remember Billy kicking Oilers in the chest when they tried to tackle him? He was a bad mo fo. That was week 11, 1983. ...and the playoff game at San Fran? Danielson threw 6 INT's but it still came down to a 47 yard Eddie Murray missed field goal. 47 right? I remember cursing all the way to the roller rink. This is the equal to counting sheep...so let me wind down. 1984: Billy Sims NFL tenure ends in week 11 with a knee injury at Minnesota. 1985: Darryl Rogers 1986: Chuck Long drafted 1987: He finally starts a game 1988: Darryl Rogers utters the best one-liner of the William Ford era "whats a guy gotta do to get fired around here?" 1989: Barry drafted bla bla I dont think 2005 lions are tough enough mentally. I think Ford should hire Tony Robbins to come and speak to the team. I am looking forward to a great season this year...I'm passing out now, so goodnight and GO LIONS! |

Wow...you did bring up some memorable and some not so memorable moments in Lions history! Amazing how much emotion we invest in watching a bunch of guys every weekend for 18 weeks out of the year. |

While he was here I really didn't think too much of him but we really haven't had any success since he left. We also used to dog Scott Mitchell and it's the same thing with him as well. We actually made the playoffs with those guys. I'm not saying I like either one of those 2 but I do miss watching the old Lions (and not only because of Barry) Wayne Fontes might be one of the most unattractive people in the world though!!!!LOL |

I remember when George Wilson coached the team. He got bitched at because the Lions always seemed to come in second place to Green Bay. At least, they were competitive then. |

The Sims loss was a crusher to me. He was a big idol to me when I was growing up...a phenomenal running back that just doesn't get his due. |

MAYDAY !! MAYDAY !! That's what I'll never forget. I was there....and when our punter John Arnold cocked his arm and threw that pass, the whole stadium gasped....everyone stood up....because our man was wide open down the left sideline...problem was, everyone in the stadium saw it except him. At the same time, the entire stadium yelled LOOK !!.....and of course he didn't....and for the first time in my life I heard an entire NFL stadium break out in laughter. I will never forget that....ever ! And I have never looked at the Lions the same way since. |

Jim Arnold...but yes...I remember that one as well. It hit the receiver in the back of the head! I believe it was against Bobby Herbert and the Saints... |

I was 11 in 1980 as well -- and remember each of those moments as if it were yesterday. But I believe you forgot that absolute dagger for that season -- the Hail Mary to Amhad Rashad by Tommy Kramer -- maybe against the Browns?(I think I am remembering all of this correctly) that clinched the tie with the Lions and Minnesota had the tiebreaker so they went to the playoffs. Anybody else remember that? |

Sure I remember that Dabirch! At the old Metropolitian Stadium. Remember the 34-0 drubbing the Kramer led Viks put on us that year? My mom took us to Belle Isle that day...I did not want to go, I wanted to watch the game. When she heard the score on the radio, she commented, "see, I know you are glad you did not stay home to watch it." I remember thinking that she should not comment on things she did not understand. I was foul that day. |

One of my most memorable moments was the monday night game against Dallas back in the early 90's. Dallas was first and goal from about the 2 yard line. Emmit Smith tried to come over the top 3 straight times. One of my most favorite Lions of all time had something to say about it. 3 straight plays Mr Smith met Mr Spielman in mid air. All three times Smith was denied entry into the endzone. In fact, Chris Spielman knocked his little bitchass backwards every time. Probably one of the last Lions with that hardnose football mentality, Stephen Boyd was up there, but never on the same level. The Lions went on to win that game, I believe in over time. The rest of the details slip my mind, but the mid air collisions will forever be remembered. |

Good call. That game was 9-19-94 and we won in overtime 20-17. Scott Mitchell's first season in Detroit...and we thought we had something. We need a Speilman on the 2005 squad...a great leader on defense who led by example...and who would not hesitate to get in a teammates face for a missed assignment or mental mistake. I was dismayed to learn that Erik Kramer would replace Spielman in the booth for the preseason games. It was always the reason not to miss those telecasts. The way Chris would critique the team was flat-out educational. I liked Boyd too...he was a poor mans Spielman. |

For more stupidity what about the last Lions vs. Miami when the Dolphins did an onside kick on the opening kickoff, regained possession and scored in like 10 seconds. Saw that pitiful "performance" in person...downhill ever since. |

Andy....Having 6 TDs thrown against you can only be equaled by giving 7 interceptions to the other team ! Poor Ty, I actually felt sorry for the guy. Monday Night Football...1982-83 against the Giants. Butch Woolfolk scores....Ali-Haji-Sheik kicks the extra point...the Michigan Band is in the end zone...plays the Michigan Fight Song....beers and garbage come pouring down on the band...band is forced to leave their seats to seek shelter. |

I remember distinctly watching the Bears runback-for-TD-in-overtime game....and there were loud Bears fans in the room as well...vivid and painful. was that the same game where Al "Bubba" Baker (I think) tore Payton's pants...leading to the quote "Now I know why they call him Sweetness"? |

~I was at the infamous "go for 2 game" in Arizona...ouch. ~I was also at a game in like '86...the Lions took the Giants to overtime...Gary James fumbled the kickoff in OT...Giants didn't even run an offensive play, just kicked a field goal to win. ~There was another Giants game ('95, Andy?) in OT when on the first play Chris Calloway went flying by Harry Colon for an OT win. ~The worst, in my mind was the Scott Mitchell interception against the Bengals in OT that lead to that mental giant Bobby Ross' demoting Mitchell to third string, promoting a rookie, Charlie Batch to starter, thus giving up on the season, giving up on Barry Sanders and leading to his retirement the following year. |

How about Barry Sanders' horrific performance against Green Bay in the playoffs when he ran for -1 yards? I don't care how bad the offensive line might have been, that's a pathetic performance by a hall-of-fame running back. |

You mean Dumbass Brown? I suffered through that one with an Eagles fan. That was the game that demonstrated Scott Mitchell didn't have what it took to lead a team. He totally imploded on the field and looked like a five year-old girl ready to burst into tears on the sideline when he got yanked. |

So much for that stat after the Chicago game. You can throw all those slappy stats out the window. One meteoric rise with the first game and a bigger meteoric drop after the second one. |
