Line: CLE by 3 OU 34 1/2

With all eyes on the Lions and their yearly QB controversy, the Browns look to take advantage of the confusion among it's starters. Defense makes the plays that cover up their mistakes, mainly with coverage, but the offense has to make a stride. This may be Joey's "try-out" game to prove all the nay-sayers wrong, but Kevin Jones will be looked onto breaking 100 yards rushing to make this a close contest. If protection is as bad as it was last week against Carolina, this game will drag....

Cleveland, on the other hand, isn't doing much better off. Last in the AFC North and near the bottom in both total offense and defense, Dilfer will have to rely on mismatches and bootleg plays if it plans on getting down the field. Reuben Droughns will have his work cut out for him and might not break 30 yards rushing in this contest.

This looks to be a good matchup for the Lions, as they'll get a break against strong teams, but the distrust in the locker room will definately lead to problems on the field.

I'll be at the game with my KJ jersey, so I hope I don't get jumped. LOL

DET 10 CLE 13

Other NFC North games:
Green Bay (1-4) @ Minnesota (1-4)
1 pm FOX ODDS: off the board (daym, that's cold)

Baltimore (2-3) @ Chicago (2-3)
4:15 pm CBS ODDS: CHI by 1

From what I saw was Garcia's ability to improvise today- which won us the game. Hooray. But does that say much about our coaches now? If we had a great plan in place, our QBs (Garcia or Harrington) shouldn't have to improvise so much, right?

And not to mention how many time outs did Garcia have to burn just because he had the plays called into him late?

While I'm happy they won over the Browns, I'm more suspect of the coaching staff now. And the litany of injuries today doesn't look good at all- far too many key players going down.

Considering he only took half the reps in practice this week and he isn't 100% healthy yet, he played OK. A full week of practice and next week's game should show what he's capable of doing.

Kevin Johnson ruptured his achilles and is out for the season. Dre Bly dislocated his wrist, can't imagine he'll miss a game. Shaun Rogers injured his knee and left the game as well. Once again Lions seem to be dropping like flies due to injury.

Mooch nearly blew it with his call for a "draw" with 3rd and 16 with 10 minutes to go. A draw. Dumb play, real dumb play. We needed 16 yards, coach. We made 6 yards and had to punt. A completed pass could have netted a first down and we would have maintained ball control. Maybe even a td, too.
No more San Francisco coaches please. Nice guys but not great coaches. First it was Monte Geralds, now we have Mooch. Nice guys come in last.

"The_rock" This is the NFL__ not many guaranteed plays in the play book for 3rd and 16___ sometimes you have to play smart and use the field and ---hey here's a great idea--- trust yo' defense!

The draw on third and long is straight out of the Wayne Fontes playbook.

The third and long is a very smart & safe play. If it was that easy to automatically think that you could just lob it over for the 16+ yards everytime then everyone would be doing it. There are certain times when it's best to get what you can out of it (and maybe break the 16+ yards needed). You assume we can snag the first down like it was stealing candy from a baby. Sometimes you have to play for field position as well. Who knows? Sometimes you can catch a defense in its nickel/dime package and catch them offgurad AND obtain the 16+ yards on a draw. It's all a tactical move- play the percentages and like super_d says; it's NEVER a guaranteed play that you can obtain the first down.

After saying that, do I still think Mooch is too conservative in his play calling? You bet! But I don't think this was one of those moments when he wimped out.

I would also like to note that this defense had 3 interceptions (almost 4 if the other db didn't knock the ball loose) and 3 sacks.

I gotta wonder if Garcia can carry this on until he gets all his starting recievers back. If he can, watch as the offense on this team truly begins to blossom.

Regardless of what the Lions QB has between their legs, my attention is still going to be focused on the play calling of the coaching staff now. Harrington, while not blameless by ANY stretch had to face the three toughest defenses in the league. Was he set up to fail? Maybe. Could Garcia have done better at QB during those three games? Maybe. DId Garcia win against the fourth lousiest defense in the league in Cleveland? Yes. Could Harrington have won? Maybe.

I think what Garcia did to win the game was something that no coach could implement. He ad-libbed and winged it the majority of the game. I want to see the same kind of imagination from Mooch now; manage the clock better, go down field more, be much more aggressive on defense (especially next week vs. Chicago & Kyle Orton) and give the Lions a chance to win.

Well right score, wrong outcome. I'm glad Garcia finally got the start and didn't disappoint IMO. To work with a depleted WR core and not give up any INT's or sacks... and move like a freakin gazelle against rushing LB's..... that says a lot.

Defense beat the Lions and Garcia helped.

Mainly because even though Garcia did a really good job at the helm, the Lions still couldn't get in a good groove. Off. coordinators couldn't get the plays in timely, not really adjusting to Garcia's style (aren't these the same guys he worked with in San Francisco? WTF). The O-Line wasn't used to having someone actually stay in the pocket for a minute, and wide-outs weren't really used to having to come back to the LOS, as they were used to giving up on the play in 4-6 seconds.

I hate that we're losing so many people now (Kevin Johnson out for the year, Bly is scheduled for surgery). Guess that Lions injury curse just keeps going on.

Super-d/ smogboy--- Gotta admit that third and long ain't easy. And the defense was doing well. OK-we won, we needed a victory, we got it and its time to prepare for the Bears.
I assume that Jeff will start for the Lions, Jim McMahon for the Bears.

What Garcia did to win the game was control the ball by moving the chains, converting many key third downs, keeping the defense off the field thus keeping them fresh to control the game in the 4th quarter.

We can talk about "maybe" all day long...but Harrington blows and I hope I never see him start another game for the Detroit Lions. He never gave us a chance to win while he was in there.
Harrington lacks mental toughness...he has no gusto...no "tour de force."
In other words, he's a pussy...and the Lions offensive backfield is forever forward a "no-wuss" zone.

No one's printing the Super Bowl tickets yet. Garcia gives them a better chance to win but this team still has lots of holes, and now lots of injuries. If they lose to the Bears on Sunday, the Bears will have the inside track to the division title.
