There's a difference between being overtly negative and being truthful. Yes, be positive, but realistic. It IS possible.

I love Detroit. It's the people that I have a problem with. Unfortunately, you're two of them.

Positive or negative, I expect this forum to be a mirror for Detroit. If I wanted sunshine and roses 24/7 about Detroit, I could listen to certain radio show on 1200 that comes on 10 am M-F. But that isn't real to me.

There is a tempered positive and negative.

The city has more than its share of both and both should be discussed. There are some people that post nothing more than 'Detroit sucks" or "my old neighborhood is a shithole"

No substanct, just derogatory shit. That is the issue.

Let's discuss the city's short comings but try to address it is a normal fashion. Claiming everyone that chooses to live in Detroit is stupid doesn't bring much to the table.

I think there is a difference between Detroit bashing (which does exist here) and legitimate criticism of a city which has an abundance of problems. For every "basher" in here, there is also a "gusher" who refuses to acknowledge that Detroit has ANY problems and attacks anyone who does. It's almost like the "why do you hate America" response from Conservatives towards anyone who criticizes the current state of America. Ignore the message and shoot the messenger.

Detroit has problems. Burying your head in the sand won't solve them. Tackling them head-on will. To do that, you must first acknowledge them. Bashing the city just for the sake of bashing does nothing to help matters and is not constructive. Recognizing the problems in order to foster discussion and possible solutions is a GOOD thing.

I think you're right on Jt1...and just to add to that, I think maybe that same tempered positive/negative should be applied when speaking of the surrounding communities. After all, it's just as bad to have blanket "Suburbs sucks" statements as it is to have "Detroit Sucks" statements over and over and over again...

I honestly have been trying to temper my anti-suburb comments as I am pro inner rings and anti sprawl.

I thought that may be the case but there is no question that my anti-suburb atke it often over the top and doesn't accurately portray how I see things.

I have been a lurker on this board for a while b4 I became a memeber..One thing that I have noticed is that when someone has something negative to say 9 times out of 10 they don't give a possible fix or solution or say that they are going to help change things in any way..To me thats just bitching.

I can imagine ppl now telling me. Its my perrogative whether I want to help or not..or I don't care I don't want to help...forgive me, but then you probably don't belong here

Why not have a splinter group of SuburbsYES.com and see how many pro-Detroiters bash on that site and how many offer great suggestions on how to create any sort of community?
I know I would love to spend countless hours contemplating the inner workings of Sterling Heights.

Well it may not be Chicago or Toronto, but it's a heck of a lot more interesting than 16 Mile & Groesbeck. And I may not live in the city, but as Crazy Horse once said, "my dead lie buried there".

...much more interesting than 16 Mile & Groesbeck! :-)

Although I'd argue that sometimes suburban-town discussion does find its way here re: Livonia-Walmart and Livonia-SMART.

Warriorfan I have never read anyone person claiming that detroit doesn't have problems or that is perfect. Everyone one knows detroit isn't perfect and has issues. That is just the line used by the detroit basher when there post are pointed out as being inaccurate.

Merchant I agree with your post 100%.Most Detroit bashers are the ones who come to Detroit at the break of dawn, and exit stage left getting the heck out of detroit before dark. Why? Because they have nothing positive to say about Detroit...but I work in Detroit.

As a proud Detroiter I will always take a stand against people who bash detroit.I will stick with my people regardless to how good or bad things get in Detroit.I have found it to be interesting how people who used to live here in the inner-city,who have moved out of Detroit for racist & economic reasons are the ones who bash Detroit, and they really think that living in the suburbs they are crime free, and believe me they have another thing coming.

Welcome to the forum Detroits_own. The idea of this forum is to mull over and hopefully get closer to understanding the riddle of Detroit. Detroit, meaning the entire international family of communities that make up our city.

The shrill voices on this forum tend to get over emphasized and the quickest rise can be got with a Detroit diss. However, if you go through all the threads at any given time, you will find the vast majority are informative, neutral and non confrontational.

In a similar vein, on rap that come up from time to time is "why does every discussion turn to race?" I have issued the "go through every thread and tell me the exact percentage" challenge and no one has taken it up because they know it is to small to fit their accusation.

What you will find here is that just about everybody, rose glasses or cynical, ~care~ a lot about the D.

Lowell I hope you know for sure that everyone here cares about Detroit. However you are the administrator of this site, and as far as I can see there's suburbanites who might care in the names of self-interest,and if someone should post a reply they do not like then their expectation is damaged. Check it out.

Detroit_Own I have to comment on your Nov 15th,2005 post, and I agree 100% with you concerning these internet punks who post nothing but negetive crap. They are to stupid to understand that they are in violation of the terms of this website, and Lowell seem to be a okay guy,and he should remove names like the-aram,plus a few others who seem to always have something negetive to post.Myself I feel that each of these forum articles is very important, and like someone said the ones who post this negetive crap don't live in Detroit.I do not usually reply to these internet punks who have nothing to offer to the subject, but to get some of this ass they have to bring a ass too,and then I am game to respond back because its my rights.Lowell what do you think about this crap that we're posting about, and there is something you can do.Soon the DETROIT DOZEN will open our website, and believe me we will ban ISPS,and whatever else because of site violations.
