Live from our ace reporter, Kazooexplorer, at the Lofts at Rivertown, an enormous fire is burning with flames shooting as high as sixty feet in the air. Based on descriptions, it sounds as if it is the recently restored 'Hamilton' four-family on the NE corner. More to come. |

I hope no one was hurt. That renovation was funded by Church of the Messiah as part of their infill housing program. They've built dozens of four-unit flats in that area and rehabbed some of the existing apartments. |

Just got back from the corner. The fire was not at the Hamilton at the Boulevard and Lafayette, but in an abandoned two-family on the west side of Field Street, just south of Lafayette. It had been safely extinguished by 12:45am Saturday. Best possible scenario under the circumstances, as this is the site for more new townhomes. |

As a tangent to this thread, a good number of years ago, the Church of the Messiah rehabed the grand, old 4 or 5 story apartment building on the southwest corner of East Grand Blvd. & Lafayette (right across from the church). There are six apartments per floor and each apt.'s door to the hall had a stained glass window. These are all large apartments and each has light and ventilation from three sides. This is appearant when you look at the Lafayette side of the building. This feature would have been of great importance before the advent of air-con. Also, garages are provided off the alley. May I suggest that the next time you're planning to be driving through the area or going to Belle Isle, allow some extra time to explore East Grand Blvd. and the surrounding neighborhood. |

It ain't called "The Grand Blvd." for nuthin.' Thanks Neilr. Imagine that place in the 1920s, when the auto shops on the Eastside were at full tilt. jjaba |

Ironically, that house was occupied until about very recently. Kicked the last of them out and poof, a big fire. What are the odds? By the way, any photographers out there -- the chimney is still standing, and would make for some pretty surreal pics. |
