United Artist Marquee was taken down today.

Sad but at the same time, it wasn't the original marquee and there is some interesting tile work underneath.

(And I admit, I first learned of this from the evil hotfudge crew)

Yes, it came down today - exposing the original tile work that's been hidden for decades.

(Although, I first learned about this from the FoBC's listserv.)

And, has any new news arisen as to which direction this "cleanup" is moving? Is it looking more like a cleanup for demolition, restoration, or simply making the building look better come the SuperBowl?

Nah, you've been able to see the tile work for months since the marquee began falling apart last February.

detroitfunk had some good photos of the tile work a few months back..

They are imploding the building, so expect the process to go much quicker than the Statler. Should be available for parking by the big game. So who's bringing the 12 pack of PBR's to watch?

Who are we having to host the building drop event, Supersport ? Detroit's gotta do better than Dick Clark.

Looking at that picture in Mikeydbn' link of the Hudsons rubble. Toward woodward really makes you realize how far that stretch has come in the last years.

Take a ride on the PM the tracks are much closer to the Hudson Block than they are to the UA. The tracks near the UA run down the middle of the street not down the sidewalk near the building like Hudson's

"December 31st at midnight. New York drops balls, we drop buildings. Its sure to become a Detroit tradition."

Isn't the technical term for dropping balls called "Tea bagging"?

One of the things that truly irritates me about this is that everything got torn down went into a dumpster and eventually will end up in a landfill.

Have the folks at the Macedonian Parking Cartel never heard of eBay???

Letters from the sign and such would unquestionably sell. Whatever doesn't sell as a antique/collectible could be sold for scrap.

Urgh!

I would love part of that sign. Some of the best pictures I ever took were of it shining in the sun.

For those of you who have the "Detroit - Then and Now" picture book.... that pic of Bagley Ave. then and now will have another drastic change for the "now" pic if the UA does come down. No other street downtown has been as decimated as Bagley Ave. has been (between Cass & GCP) with the razing of the Tuller, Statler, and maybe the UA.

Obviously this is part of the demo. If there was any rehab, any rehab, wouldn't there be some promotion of it?

I don't know. If they were going to tear it down, I don't think they would do it piecemeal. I'm thinking they're just removing a little bit of an eye sore for the superbowl and that building will continue to remain vacant for years to come.

Methinks this is no demo work. It's just to clean up a bit for the Super Bowl.

With the media coverage that J'ville got last year, it looks like someone is taking some type of initiative to thwart any negative publicity.
