Yeah, they're really having a positive influence on our youth, huh?

Sometimes I wonder why they're still allowed to recruit in the DPS. Maybe they'd get their message across if they learned some respect.

What bothers me is they will ultimately turn off kids to activism - they're such a bad example.

BAMN protestors, including students bused in from the DPS, hurled packets of soy sauce at an Asian-American friend of mine at a rally for AA in Ann Arbor a couple months ago. She happened to be standing near a group of people protesting against AA, and though she had no opinion one way or the other and wanted to get more information by attending the rally, she was taunted with racial comments about her ethnicity and then pelted with soy sauce packets.

There's a reason no one in Ann Arbor will work with BAMN anymore.

Maybe they should stay home and study if they're so concerned about their chances of getting into a good university.

That's really something, The_Aram.

I know the FBI looked into BAMN because of some of their tactics.

They also got a condemnation from the NAACP for the most recent UM protest. (Of course, the NAACP also condemned Donovan McNabb for becoming a "white" style pocket quarterback, so sometimes both organizations make you shake your head).

Nothing good comes out of BAMN influencing children. If someone enabled youth to think rationally on the pros and cons of affirmative action, that would be alright, but militant opposition such as what we've seen is reprehensible.

Being obnoxious, no matter who you are or what you're protesting, tends to turn people off. They should rethink their tactics.

The thing is, the court have already ruled repeatedly that the ballot initiative should move forward. All BAMN really has done is stall it from happening.

Moreover, when it does reach the ballot, their actions will likely cause some voters to vote in favor of abolishing affirmative action simply out of spite towards BAMN.

Rosa Parks would spin in her grave over these kind of tactics as would Martin Luther King, Jr. What separates their form of activism to these folks is they were peaceful and actually had a stronger message.

I wouldn't go and give bamn that much credit, Fnemecek.

Just about everyone who signed my petitions did so because they opposed racism, and wanted to see it abolished in all forms.

black or white, tactics like the ones used by BAMN are only polarizing Michigan's sensitive "racial minded" population. Honestly what good does that do?

I remember being pulled out of class in HS to listen to their BS. I want a refund on that wasted 45 minutes of my life.

i saw footage of the incident on "off the record" this morning, and their actions aren't going to convince anyone who saw it that AA should stand. its only going to reinforce any negative opinions of residents of this city, pretty sad

Wouldn't it be fun to get a bunch of forumers together and disrupt a BAMN meeting! :-)

I remember driving past the Lansing Center that day, and wondering why their were so many LPD cars out front.

I saw the coverage of this, and while the flipping of the table was a bit much, I saw nothing else shameful or out of the ordinary as protests go. I see plenty of protest living here in Lansing. The only difference I saw here was that this one was about a very controversial issue that's very current and pending.

Hmm... Last I heard, BAMN's ringleaders were a couple of white former U of M students. So much for the grass roots and not being manipulated by the Man.

The sad thing is the kids who are in BAMN tend to be legitimately distressed about the state of the country. BAMN finds them and twists them. I've known very wonderful people who made it out of that group with their politics intact. Shame on Shanta Driver and the Massie clan for their misuse of trust.

When I was at Cass, I remember having to sit in the recital hall to hear their female attorney explian why everyone should get involved. It was very one sided, and as usual with BAMN, peppered with their venom. There are, or were, a couple of websites that showed their links to various political organizations (i.e. communism).

BAMN does a good job at getting students to yell, shout, scream and holler without fully informing them. That's really, IMHO, BAMN's only claim to fame, it's ability to turn out people with protest signs in huge numbers. Sadly their strategy rarely works.

Isn't that the story of most extreme groups both conservative and liberal? I mean, they never fully inform their victims...I mean...supporters. :-) PETA, BAMN, and so on...

With that said I love nothing more then to see a good protest if even over what you or I may see as the most ridiculous issues. The only thing I saw BAMN do wrong at the Lansing Center was turn over a table the Board of Canvassers was trying to use as an unneeded barrier. Wrong? Sure. But I've seen far worse in regards to behavior at a protest, and even here in Lansing.
