Well, the people mover was down after the Wings game tonite. One of the trains got stuck near cobo and the river for 15 minutes.. provoked lots of "people mugger" and detroit bashing from everyone waiting in line at the JLA station... ...this cant be good for Super Bowl, when the system will be used a lot |

Mackinaw, come on, that's not the point. Regardless of walking distance, people shouldn't just accept that the People Mover may not always work, or may break down when heavily used. The bar has to be set much higher than that. |

What??????? A 30 year old one off technology on a continous loop system was delayed for FIFTEEN WHOLE MINUTES? See this is why Detroit is a stinking armpit, bag of shit town. This is all Colemans fault! Breaking down during a Wings game? Coincidence? I think not. I think the blacks in charge of this city did it to show white people they aren't wnated here!!!!! Fuck this town and fuck this forum...I'm never posting here again...YOU ALL SUCK! Sheeesh people, lighten up. Perhaps the trains were stopped because of safety reasons? Perhaps something fell on the track? Perhaps the cars were over fucking loaded, setting of false alarms in ths systems, as is common when Wings fans try to play frat boy in phone booth with the cares?? |

Skulker yells "Bingo"...and wins. For everytime I have heard those words come out of someones mouth. Doesn't everyone wish we lived in a perfect world? What about the loooong delays on the highway to get the hell out of the city as fast as they can? "Damn Detroit, they are just doing it purposely so that we have to stay in this hell hole longer!" |

Maybe the People Mover is powered by the city department of lighting. Or, OTOH, maybe DTE wanted to wait till the check cleared. |

For all to enjoy Merry Christmas, remember to sing when you read it. I believe it was a take off the musical Rain Maker (not sure if that is the correct name). Monorail Lyle Lanley: Well, sir, there's nothing on earth Like a genuine, Bona fide, Electrified, Six-car Monorail! What'd I say? Ned Flanders: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: What's it called? Patty+Selma: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: That's right! Monorail! [crowd chants `Monorail' softly and rhythmically] Miss Hoover: I hear those things are awfully loud... Lyle Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud. Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend? Lyle Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend. Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs? Lyle Lanley: You'll be given cushy jobs. Abe: Were you sent here by the devil? Lyle Lanley: No, good sir, I'm on the level. Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can. Lyle Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man. I swear it's Springfield's only choice... Throw up your hands and raise your voice! All: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: What's it called? All: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: Once again... All: Monorail! Marge: But Main Street's still all cracked and broken... Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken! All: Monorail! Monorail! Monorail! [big finish] Monorail! Homer: Mono... D'oh! |

quote: Presbyterian College Academic Web Server Detroit's Downtown People Mover (DPM) is one of five urban "people mover" systems that were built in the U.S. beginning in the 1970s. (The other four are in Miami, Florida, Jacksonville, Florida, Irving, Texas, and Morgantown, West Virginia.) It is an automated system that uses two-car trains running on an elevated guideway. The technology is steel wheels on standard-gauge steel-rails, but with linear induction motors instead of normal traction motors. (This is similar to Vancouver BC's Skytrain system.) The route is a one-way loop 2.9 miles (4.7 km) long, with thirteen stations. A complete circuit takes about fifteen minutes, and trains run every three to five minutes. The cash fare is $0.50. The DPM opened in June 1987. Ridership has been rather light, approximately 5-10,000 per day. It was originally intended to be the downtown distributor for a rapid-transit system which was not built.
Way more info on the DPM than the "Official" web site. |

All motorized vehicles break down at one time or another. They are more apt to break down in the winter. I've been stranded on just about every vehicle imaginable at one time or another. I even had to walk down from the top of the lift hill of the Gemini rollercoaster at Cedar point. The power went out in part of the park leaving us stranded at the top of the ride for 30 minutes. They didn't know when the power was coming on. They had us walk down the catwalk on the side of the lift hill. Scariest coaster ride I have ever had in my life. |

I didn't know that, but after you said it, the episode does seem Conan O'Brian-ish. I like him, he's funny. Last night he bussed people around in New York. Got to see his old apartment! |

I just find it highly amusing that whenever you make the sound of the people mover departing "chimes" and then hum the accelleration noise (rising pitch) EVERYONE knows what you're talking about... or making noise about... or making fun of... or whatever. I was just on it a couple days ago for a trip around the city. What are the plans for the Grand Circus Park station and the David Whitney? Looks like they're doing a lot of work to the Whitney, so it would be good if they fixed up that station too. especially with the Super Bowl coming up. The People Mover, like it or not, is a great way to get a view of the Downtown Area. |

I think they should turn the people mover into an elevated running track. Cover the rails with some track surface. $1 per run and you get access the to entire loop or can get off at any stop. Less maintenance, no breakdowns and you can set up concession stands at the PM stops. |

The people most likely to complian about the PM or mass transit systems in general are those most likely to demean them or refuse to fund them. I would pay to see a full PM train sing the simpsons "Monorail" |
