I have no idea but WHAT is with the complicated restaurant names downtown? Is that some new urban trend I missed? "Acadie Cajun & Creole Cuisine" "Detroit Breakfast House & Grill" Bad restaurant names are such a turnoff. I seriously never planned on going to the Detroit Breakfast House & Grill just because of the name. But I did go and it was fantastic. But I never talk about it, because the name just completely lacks imagination and is embarrassing to say aloud. WTF?? (Message edited by dialh4hipster on December 22, 2005) |

Dial4, I think you're overreacting. The names aren't that long. Usually, the terms "bar and grill" are part of restaurants full name but no one uses them once everybody knows the place. For example "Honest John's Bar and Grill" is simply known as "Honest John's." There's a coney island near me that's about to open named "George's Ham and Corned Beef Coney Island." I'm sure people will refer to it as George's Coney Island on... If these places put "Detroit" in front of their name, their name will be a bit longer. However, over time people will just shorten the name. The "Detroit Breakfast House and Grill" will just be called the "Breakfast House." Problem solved. Also, the name of "Acadie Cajun & Creole Cuisine" lets people know that they serve both Cajun and Creole food. Most people don't know that Cajun food is associated with the French Acadians that were run out of Canada by the British colonists. They're white. Creole food is prepared by the black residents of Louisiana who claim to have a mixture of heritages: African, French, and Native American. Cajun and Creole food are different in how they are prepared. Thus the name of the restaurant Acadie Cajun & Creole Cuisine" makes perfect sense to me. I'd really just like a place called "Restaurant" like in Seinfeld. Good point Royce about how people will just shorten the names on their own. |

That's "Honest John's Bar and No Grill" And what I think DialH is saying, is not that the names are too long, but rather that they are just descriptive. No marketing, no imagination just a description of what goes on inside. |

Dabirch, I thought when Honest John's moved to it's new location it changed the name since it does serve food. When they were on Field Street, they didn't serve food so the name made sense. What's the 411? |

Kept the name. Added a grill. Liked the paradox. It's John Thompson. It's not supposed to make sense... |

Dabirch, I was walking around today since it was so nice out and I didn't see a 541 on the comedy place but it is under renovation. The old restaurant across the street was under renovations also with people coming in and out. |

sidebar for all you seinfeld trivia fans out there: the "restaurant" that the gang always hung out in (at least the outside) is tom's diner in morninside heights. [morningside heights is where columbia university is, below harlem, upper west sideof manhattan.] this is the same diner that susan vega sings about in the song (aptly titled) "tom's diner". we now return you to your regularly scheduled thread... |

541 was a restaurant that last for about 6 months under the name "541" in huge numbers on the side of the building (still has the "now open" sign up). Looked like a really nice place on the inside. Prior to that I believe it was called JaDa? |

The outside in later episodes just showed the word "Restaurant". The characters called the place "Monk's." You could see the word on some of the windows in some of the episodes. |

I disagree with it being a bad name, DialH. If nothing else, you know exactly who they are and what they do. A more imaginative name won't always accomplish that. As for the name being too long, which a couple of other folks mentioned, people will always shorten a long name. Detroit Breakfast House Bar & Grill becomes "Breakfast House". Honest John's? Bar & No Grill becomes "Honest John's?". It all works out in the end. Personally, I'm glad just to have these places open - unimaginative name and all. |

Honest John's? Bar & No Grill I can see being shortened to just being Honest John's, but Detroit Breakfast House Bar & Grill still seems clunky and awfully difficult to shorten easily. And why Breakfast House? It reminds me of the iHop! Acadie Cajun & Creole Cuisine can just be called Acadie after awhile but I'm a little inclined to agree with Dialh a little bit on this one. At least come up with a NAME instead of "Detroit whatever" and I think it'd be easier to remember. |

541 E. Larned is the Bea's Comedy Kitchen space. Ja-Da and the later bbq place "546" were at 546 E. Larned, across the street from Opus One (565 E. Larned) and Bea's. |

546 is now the Buzz Bar. It opened for New Year's, but won't officially open for a few weeks. They'll have a coffee bar in the morning, pizzeria-style lunch/dinner, and bar til 2 a.m. with live music upstairs. |

Hi - Long time reader, first time poster.... Gotta side with DialH on this one. Long and unimaginative restaurant names drive me fucking bananas. Why does Atlas Global Bistro have three words? Just "Atlas" would have been far preferable and more intriguing. The idea of good eating is adventure, intrigue, innovation, excitement. Not "Bob's House of Hamburgers, Fries, the Occasional Salmon Special and Tepid Weak Coffee" There are some good local examples like "Slows", "Oslo", "Cuisine", "Tribute", "Twingos", "Mosaic"....any restaurant that thinks I am such a dolt that I need a full, six word menu explanation in their name is likely to insult me with bad food as well. It goes along with the usually bad decor of these places as well. And can we stop naming everything "Detroit such and such"? I am not going to eat or shop there just because it has "Detroit" in the name. We deserve better people! Rant over. |

The building across fron Saint Andrews? Another restaurant? I can see the traffic jam now... I'm not really into the mixed space use. There's too many parking garages downtown to begin with, and now they're popping up everywhere as "mixed use". Are there that many cars in the city? |

I have never given a thought to whether a place has a long or a short name - seems to me when they have a long name it is always referred to in an abbreviated sense anyway. And I would think that having "Detroit" in the name would be seen as an affirmation of the D, and something to be seen as positive by the forumers. |
