Go on to the Blue Nile website and take a lot of time to educate yourself. Go to a couple of stores to get an idea of what you want. Compare the store prices with the prices on Blue Nile (focus on the stone). You'll get a feel for the prices after you've looked long enough. After you get educated you'll begin to realize that the stores with a major retail presence have to pay for those nice stores somehow-- and they typically have very high mark-ups. I was able to find a reputable Diamond broker. These guys mostly sell to Jewelry stores, but will sell to individuals (they don't want to advertise this fact for fear of antagonizing their customers-- the retail stores). He, as a matter of course, pulls up comparable diamonds on Blue Nile and compares his prices (they were a bit lower). Once you have the diamond you can go to a jeweler who makes his own stuff and you can design a setting. I found that it wasn't much more to get it done custom. |

Murray's Jewelery and Auto Parts (not kidding) on Plymouth Road in Redford is great. The selection is broad, the prices are awesome, and staff is knowledgeable. It's been there for years and I proudly admit that I bought my wifes' engagement ring there. |

There is a concentration of diamond merchants in Southfield with wholesalers and cutters who will certainly sell to the public, but you must inform yourself first, ala bluenile, etc., as suggested above. I think there are plazas or buildings, where several set up shop, ala 47th street in NYC. Congrats! |

I would try "Facets of Todd Michael" in the Fisher Building. Most of the stuff is made and designed right in the store, which makes each piece unique. I bought my girlfriend a gift there for Christmas and she really loved it. |
