I know that they used to be on Grand River near Livernois, then in Redford, now they are in Novi...Temple Baptist has moved every twenty years or so, probably to get away from those pesky black people. TB is a classic conservocrite congregation that used to bring in Jerry Falwell to speak on a yearly basis. In the 80's, the congregation was led by the Rev. Truman Dollar, who left abruptly after being busted for using church phone lines to call 1-900-SEX lines. |

I know all that stuff! :-) I just would like to know if the Original Building on Temple is still there! and I dunno if you know it or not, they dropped the Temple Baptist name and are now called Northridge Church and have abandoned their Fundamentalist roots... Now how about that picture? -Chuck |

I don't know if the church was originally located on Temple, but it was located on 14th Street, south of the Boulevard for many years, before it moved to the Grand River / Livernois location. Both the church and its social hall (across 14th) are still there. |

Chuck, welcome to the Forum. You asked for a photo. You're lucky you didn't get the latest Detroit Lions news or some blast about The Lafayette Coney Island. BTW, The Lafayette is better than the American by as long shot. jjaba remembers when the new Temple Baptist Church was built on Grand River. It was huge and way outta scale with the rest of the bldgs. He rode the feeder buses past it going down to Cass Tech.in the 1950s. jjaba, Proudly Westside Bar Mitzvah bukkor. |

Back about 1954, maybe 1955, Life magazine had an article about religion in America, and one of it's full page photos showed the entire congregation of Temple Baptist standing on Grand River in front of the church. I googled it to try to find it to no avail. I only remembered it because it struck me between the eyes to see something I knew pictured in Life magazine. That tiny neuron is obviously alive and well in my brain. |

That Life Mag. article was one month after they featured Ray and jjaba as newsboys at our substation on Washburn, by the alley offa Grand River. We both had routes with Detroit Times, the liberal Hearst paper, published on Times Square, downtown. jjaba, Westsider. |

Too bad the Times folded 45 years ago. The quality of the current press leaves something to be desired; especially their newly-formatted web editions. Sigh. Now back to the original thread........ |

623kraw, your photo is of Trumbull Presbyterian Church, on (natch) Trumbull. It's now owned by a different denomination, whose name escapes me. |

Fear not, K8cpa, you are not forgotten. Whilst perusing ebay for some ill gotten jpegs that I could swipe for another topic, I happened to stumble upon this old postcard for sale listed in the collectables section. I did a little work on it to make it more presentable. Don't know who the geezers are though. I wouldn't expect anything else appearing, as this was pure chance finding this photo. |

I'll say! Those old guys are Dr. J. Frank Norris and Dr. G.B. Vick... That must be an old picture! WOW! 8-O Norris was the embattled leader of the World Baptist Fellowship International, Of which out spawned the Baptist Bible Fellowship International, Because of Norris's Leadership style and other things, It's kinda funny, that all connects to me, in a weird sort of a way, Temple spawned the WBFI, which out of it, came the BBFI, Which Geliead Baptist Church on Fort St, (originally) was a part of, Of which out of came Open Door Baptist Church, which was Originally on Dearborn St. in Dalray, Who ran a school called Open Door Baptist Church, which, is where I Accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour and Lord in 1982. Open Door is still around, well, Sorta. They were on Martin St. But in 1995, The Pastor, Chris Warden ended up tesifying against a gang member and had his and his families lives threatened, and he left town, after which the Church board and membership voted to merge with Downtown Fundamental Baptist on Cicotte st. and they took the name, Dr. Lawarence Mandez Pastors there... Anyhow, Small world! Nice Picture too! Helps me remember my Past! -Chuck (Message edited by k8cpa on January 16, 2006) |
