Mayor, Council Fight Over Rosa Parks Street Plan
Mayor Circulating Petition To Keep Road Named After Relative

POSTED: 8:24 pm EST December 27, 2005
UPDATED: 8:33 pm EST December 27, 2005

FLAT ROCK, Mich. -- The mayor and city council in Flat Rock are split over a proposal to rename a small street for Rosa Parks.

The access road leads up to the Detroit suburb's community center.

About two years ago, Mayor Richard Jones named it Maguire Street, after his granddaughter.

He said DTE Energy wouldn't run utility lines to the new community center unless it had an address.

On Nov. 28, council voted to rename it Rosa Parks Way, for the late civil rights pioneer.

The mayor said he's circulating petitions to keep his granddaughter's name on the street.

Sadly true, Ras.

Imagine, if he wins with his petition, the shame he will have forced on his unwitting granddaughter. He has already shamed himself, but it appears that his ego is such that he is shameless.

It seems to me that cities, etc might have some mechanism in place that would prevent Mayors from naming streets or bldgs or whatever fo children or pets or grandchildren or whatever.

I saw this story on the news, and the whole time I kept thinking "why don't they just pick another street?" It's a waste of time by both parties unless Maguire street is like Main Street Flat Rock.

Leave it be. Name another street for Rosa Parks.
This is as stupid as renaming a Detroit Expressway for anybody else. Respect the legacies of place names.

Name new things in honor of heros.

I read an article recently (Freep or News) that talked about Pontiac's name being removed from several Oakland County buildings, i.e. - schools and hospitals.

I think it's a shame and I think Chief Pontiac's name deserves respect too but I don't hear to many people concerned about it.
