Drummond was crap this year. Time to find a new return specialist. Keepers: DE Kalimba Edwards CB Andre Goodman LB James Davis S Terrence Holt Maybe: TE Casey FitzSimmons. That's it. Kind of a good thing. Hope to see a large amount of turnover. |

Agreed Runner, I hesitated on including Drummond at first. Wouldn't be a loss to let him go. Can we bring back Mel Gray? |

Andre Goodman? Are you kidding me? This guy has been getting burned for two years straight now....they need to get rid of him, he can't tackle at all. I would keep: Backus (like him or not...who would you get to replace the most important OL position?) McQuarters (did fine as a nickel back, struggled as a starter) Holmes Holt Redding DeVries Johnson Drummond (if he doesn't hold out again...that hurt him this year) and Bryson: I know, I know, but the problem really isn't with him...it is with how the idiotic coaching staff has been using him. If he stays in a BACKUP role to Kevin Jones meaning 15-20 plays a game (at most), then I think he would be worth keeping. Besides...like him or not, you know they will keep him so might as well get used to it. |

Backus is the ultimate failure. McQuarters? Are you shitting me? Can't run, and sure as hell can't tackle. Holmes I'm not sure about and Johnson hasn't done much... |

Holmes has been one of the leading tacklers on the team and is a solid player. Johnson was their best reciever before he was hurt for the year. McQuarters has been a better return man then Drummond, and the first 4-5 games when he was the nickel back he did a good job, the problem came when Bryant went down and he had to start. As far as Backus, yes he is an average tackle. But that is all you will find on the FA market, teams don't let good players at that position get away. All they will get on the market is someone with his talent level or worse, so might as well keep him and hope he can improve unless they know for sure they can draft an Orlando Pace type player. |

Agreed. There really are no other choices for OT's at the moment which is too bad... Did anyoone catch this? http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/s tory/5201272 I would hope Detroit would do anything to secure him. The Packers dismal year and Favre's interceptions are not HIS fault alone. |

Backus is not average, he's below average. He's making a bundle of money for someone who is, as I said, horseshit. |

I have serious problems with McQuarters, but he filled several positions as a back-up, and if we were any good, he would be valuable thru the course of the season. Sure is a lot of dead weight on that list. |

Out of that list of totally unrestricted free agency I can honestly see the Lions picking up... Backus (not because he's great but he's reliable) Holmes (to help with the young LBs) McQuarters (back up only & possible KR/PR) DeVries (filled the defensive rotation nicely) Johnson (to help with the young WRs) Again, none of these guys would probably start on a decent NFL team but with the available talent out there, this might be the best we can get at a decent price. I wouldn't give any long term contracts either. I think most of these guys are career back-ups anyway, but still somewhat servicable in spot duty. |

Jesus, are you guys watching the same Lions I am? The only thing you can rely on Backus for is to get beat consistently by his man. He's a bad lineman on a bad line. I will say one positive thing about him: he's not Dominic Raiola. (Message edited by czar on December 29, 2005) |

Okay...who else is out there? Do we draft some rookie to take Backus' place and maybe move him to the inside?? |

No way, get a veteran free agent. Rookies won't help this line, though that would fit Millen's pattern of poor management decisions, the ever moving three year plan. |

Czar, I think that would be the ideal situation if we could find a solid veteran to replace Backus but like Marcnbyr mentioned earlier, the prized (or even better than average) O line guys are kept around like prized golden geese- they're just not out on the open market too often. On the market next year will be... Adam Haayer Anthony Clement Barrett Brooks Bob Whitfield Chad Slaughter Courtney Van Buren (restricted) Ephraim Salaam Ethan Brooks John St. Clair Jon Runyan Jordan Black (restricted) Kevin Barry Kevin Shaffer LJ Shelton Makoa Freitas (restricted) Matt Hill Mike Pearson Rex Tucker Scott Gragg Seth Wand (restricted) Stockar McDougle (!!!) Todd Fordham Todd Steussie Tom Ashworth Tony Pashos (restricted) Torrin Tucker (restricted) Victor Riley Wayne Hunter (restricted) I don't exactly recognize any of them being stellar selections with the exception of possibly Todd Steussie and he's probably older than dirt by now. |

Runyan and Shelton are pretty good too, wouldn't mind seeing them here at all. I heard on WDFN that Backus' former teammate and one draft pick ahead of him Steve Hutchinson will be a FA in Seattle, but the Seahawks will probably give him the franchise tag. That's a shame...he is an excellent lineman. |
