It is about time.

Anyone have any additional information / rumours / speculation?

From Gord Henderson, Windsor Star, Dec. 24, 2004:

"In January, too late to brighten the festive season unless you're Orthodox Christian, Windsor will learn it's been awarded a stand-alone medical school, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario, that will have major spinoff benefits for the local economy and for health care in this poorly serviced region. I'm told the deal is signed, sealed and ready for delivery during the final three weeks of the federal election campaign."

Unless they are planning on building a new hospital also, there isn't going to be much change in the health care services. Also, how many students, 60 is a lot different than 200. Regardless, people will continue to have to cross the border for elective procedures, last time I checked med students weren't performing bariatric surgery.

I don't understand why the med school needs to be affiliated with UWO. The new med school should be U of Windsor's alone and have as many spaces as the other Ontario schools, i.e. not be a small, regional program.

Yes, Miss. Just step into the next room and disrobe....and then spin around that pole on the stage for the next ten minutes.

"Will that help me feel better doctor?"

No, but you will be able to pay my bill when you are done.

UpinOttawa,
The UWO has the best medical school in Ontario, affiliating it with the UWO makes sense. UofW can't compare. As it stands, this has failed as the Liberals sent this school up near Northwestern T.O. (I believe). Ssd, because Windsor is an under-funded, under-serviced region with regards to healthcare...go figure.

...Windsor shafted once again!

Itsjeff, hopefully a doctor in the future but not of the Medical type. : )

Goat: according to my reading of Gord Henderson's article, he states that Windsor will be receiving a medical school and the announcement will occur within the next two weeks. I won't hold my breath, but Gord is putting his reputation on the line here so he likely has a very good source.

Now, I am uncertain as to what he means by "affiliated with"? This could mean that the Windsor med school will belong to UWO or that it will be a partnership between UofW and UWO. I hope it is the latter, but I would prefer UofW to have complete and full control over the new med school. The med school should compete with UWO and the other Ontario schools for students, faculty, and research grants. A competitive med school should attract heath care dollars to Windsor and away from London. Why does London always have to play a major role in how health care is delivered and provided in Windsor?

I fear that an UWO-affiliated med school in Windsor will be small (i.e. not nearly the size of the other schools) and not research oriented. I say this as a graduate of UWO (not meds, though).

Danny it only works in GayCanada.

UpinOttawa, I believe they will be affiliated (so I have been told) but I beleive this med school is not the one that Windsor was running for a year to two back.

As for London getting all the $$$ for medical. It is obvious they have one of the best med schools in the country, plus it doesn't hurt ot consistently kiss the gov'ts ass. Besides, the "look down your nose" pop. of London thrives on trying to schitt on Windsor.

I guess we'll have to wait for the details.

I personally think that a U of Windsor medical school could thrive on partnerships developed with the Metro Detroit med schools. If Windsor med students could do a few months over at Detroit Receiving they would get an experience unmatched by any other Ontario medical program. Also, I am sure some of the Wayne State or U-M students would not mind a couple months of “international experience” at a school they could commute to (commuter rail line to Windsor, anyone?).

Anyone out there will any inside information on this medical school announcement?

Umm, not likely. Such a rotation would be lacking draw in terms of both international experience and medical education. The main reasons to do away rotations are to show your performance to a program you plan on applying to for residency, to go somewhere that is known to have a stellar program in your future field, or to go far away to enjoy family/friends or cool travels.

On the other hand, it would benefit them to come here as mentioned. They would most likely have to apply for away rotations like other students because Wayne is pretty protective about preserving its primary rotation privledges in the major Metro-Detroit hospital systems.

London sucks - and I can say that because I live there.
