Former Motown HQ to be razed
By BILL MCGRAW
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

More than 30 years after Motown Records left its hometown for Los Angeles, one of the legendary company’s former headquarters has a date with the wrecking ball.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said Thursday the work is scheduled to start this week on the 10-story Motown building on the northwest corner of Woodward and the Fisher Freeway downtown.

Kilpatrick says the work will proceed so quickly that the site will be used for a parking lot during the Super Bowl. After that, the city will market it to developers.

The building is owned, Kilpatrick said, by a California-based company in which Motown founder Berry Gordy has an interest.

Gordy founded the company in 1959 in a house on West Grand Boulevard where the Motown Museum stands today. He moved his offices into the 10-story Woodward building in the late 1960s. The company moved to Los Angeles in 1972, a decision Gordy has since said he regretted.

In recent years, talk has surfaced regularly of putting an expanded Motown museum onto the Woodward site, but nothing has come of it. Kilpatrick said Gordy still wants to establish a museum there.

Well, at least he's honest about it...

Of course it is, but now it's confirmed by a major newspaper. There is no more doubt now for anyone that had doubts before.

The article was already posted in the other thread. No point in starting a new thread.

Has this building been hugged? I was under the impression a gathering is called for buildings to be demo'd and they are hugged.

Let me see. 100 dollar a day for parking spot. The site probably has 100 parking spots x 100 dollars is 10,000 dollars time three nights equals 30,000 dollars. Does that equal the annual tax bill?

that site has more than 100 spots...i may be wrong on this, but i thought the vacant area north of there is a part of it...or is at least owned by the same entity. anyone know for sure?

even if it's not, those few blocks (if it is all used for parking), at that price, could pull in close to 5 times that amount. all the more reason to just leave the building if you ask me, and do something creative with it for the suberbowl.

Valkyrias, in Detroit, creativity loses out to making a fast buck every time.

ADMIN: Probably time to join all the Motown/Donovan/Sanders threads into one, because you know there will be even more data are they are torn down.

Just a thought.
