I saw one in place yesterday on the Cobo corner at Washington Blvd. and Fort -- nice looking! Think black monolith (like from "2001: A Space Odyssey") but with a slight aerodynamic curve to each face, and topped by a chromed, cast metal "cap" featuring downtown building archectural motifs. A simple stacked list of sites with directional arrows is on each face. Very classy. I've seen the metal stands ready for these signs all around the downtown, but this was the first completed sign I've spotted.

I think I saw one of those next to Campus Martius on Cadillac Square.

Its dark green, not black. The same color as the new light poles on Woodward and Washington.

Given all the sunshine that we get this time of year, it's hard to tell black from dark green to "city green." :-)

Sorry, 'City Green' is a trademarked wholly-owned identity of Big Fred's homegrown delight...you will have to stop using this term unless you want a visit from his attorneys.

There is one on Washington Blvd and grandriver. It has a white area where it looks as if they might place a map.

If I had my way, the one at Campus Martius would be interactive, perhaps using MapDetroit.

There's a couple on Woodward and Campus Martius also. One thing though: who's gonna recognize a arrow pointing right back at you? Wish I had a picture to show you all.

I've seen these in other cities, not a bad idea as long as they are maintained.

Here's a couple more:

front
side

Larger versions here:
http://static.flickr.com/39/87071186_14725b45e1_b.jpg
http://static.flickr.com/41/87071315_2b1c1cdbf2_b.jpg

I like them a lot. As stated, the color is the "Detroit Green" of the new light and traffic poles. The sides look like aluminum, with flush screws. I'm anxious to see the maps installed. It would be nice if they are backlit, but from the RFP it doesn’t look like they are.

The RFP shows a cap on the top w/ an engraved skyline scene. It looks nice, but I kind of hope they stay the way they are. I like how simple the current version is.

They look great w/ the rest of the streetscape improvements and fit very well. They're a nice size, not huge like other ones I've seen in other cities that take up a huge amount of space because of the advertising they also contain.

Here are some pics of the same system in San Francisco. Detroit’s look a lot more solid b/c they don’t sit on a pedestal as in the SF ones. http://forms-surfaces.com/projects/municipal/sanfrancisco_ca.htm

It seems to me that the ones pointing down mean turn around...and the ones pointing up mean go straight...

but I don't do arrows well.

Nice pics guys!!!Some maps be saying "Transit Center" as one of the directions. That must be the new bus transit center that we'll see soon...if I'm right.By the way, the image of Kwame on the map WILL scare the vistors away when Super Bowl is here.

Not really sure why the arrow points down for Campus Martius on the Washington Blvd. one. I would think it would be quickest and easier to find if you hang a right.

Shouldn't there be directions to Greektown, Foxtown, Wayne State, and New Center too? Maybe the tunnel or bridge?

I like them though, it helps give downtown the "I'm a downtown" feel.

These are nice for walking, but we also need wayfinding signs like they have in Europe - big, high visibility ones that you can see while driving. These dinky little green and red signs can't be very useful to outsiders driving in.

The top does look very nice.

I like how the ball on top of the Penobscot is actually painted red while everything else is the regular iron work or whatever it is... nice touch, something that Detroiters will recognize
