Anyone know what happened to the SLOAT MACHINE CO. on 1515 SPRINGWELLS? I looked at up on this site..:

http://www.cis.state.mi.us/bcs _corp/dt_corp.asp?id_nbr=02732 2&name_entity=SLOAT%20MACHINE% 20CO.

and it's closed up, anyone know why?

according to records it's been closed since around 1998.. Anyhow know why?

-Chuck

P.S. Passed it tonight, I visited down at Springwells Baptist Church on Springwells Ave there in Southwest Detroit.

Well they haven't filed a ANNUAL REPORT since 1997, I suspect they are out of business. To bad, they started in 1957.
My maps show 1515 Springwells as a house. But there appears to be a building next door. Is that building?

This is the only building i could find on that section of Springwells that looks like a machine shop.

Has this turned into Detroit's own version of Area 51?

What is Sloat Machine Company about anyway? Is there a historical significance to the place or is it idle curiosity?

Don't quote me on this, but I have a vague recollection that much of Sloat's business had to do with parts for slot machines.

Hopefully someone else here can verify or debunk this. If I can find the time I'll check with some of the oldtimers from the neighborhood.

Is K8cpa a ham license callsign from the 1950s?

Livernoisyard, You're very observant. :-) It is in fact, an Amateur Radio callsign, It is, what is referred to as a "Vanity" Callsign. and yes, it was originally from the 1950's. it's also my initials, why I picked it.. :-) I am, in fact, K8CPA, the third... or the the third person to hold this call, I'm a general class. I've been licensed since 1989. I have a dipole up here in the backyard in Lincoln Park here. Although, my HF (High Frequency) radio is in need of repairs. I need to get me a job, so I can afford to pack it up and ship it to FL to get it repaired. and it being 52 LBS, that ain't gonna be no easy job. (muscle wise or money wise) In the old days, we could fix 'em ourselfs, but like anything else, these radios have gotten to complex, fixing 'em outselves isn't an option... Anyhow, just a comment on my user name, Yes, it is a Amatuer Radio (ham) Callsign....

Tåla, You're half right... They were originally on trumbell ave, then moved to springwells ave. from there, I guess they did go out of business.

K8cpa, Thanks, I realize the spelling of the name.

I grew up in the neighborhood, and Dad had businesses there. There is just something in my fuzzy memories regarding operations there that clicked in. I really wish I could remember the specifics.

The owner or management hung out in the area, but with all my connections to the old bars and restaurants there, I just can't place who gave me that tidbit of info.

Is that the right building I posted above? If not, I will blow it off and keep looking.

A website also indicates that its pension plan was unfunded.

I got a ham license (K9KJP) in niner land, suburban M'Waukey, back while 14 years old in 1957, plus an FCC First Class Radiotelephone License while in high school. Used the 1st Class during my twelve years of AM/FM/TV broadcasting - production, DJ, chief engineer, etc. during the end of the glory days in radio - 1965 to 1977.
