4 schools push for minority science, mathematics students By Sherri Begin • January 16, 2006 Four of Michigan’s state-funded universities plan next week to launch a partnership to increase the number of underrepresented minority students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in science and mathematics. Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University will kick off the Michigan Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Jan. 23 at UM’s new Detroit office in Orchestra Place. The five-year, $5 million initiative is funded equally by the National Science Foundation and the four universities. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/c gi-bin/article.pl?articleId=28 611 |

A fine initiative. One day these students will find great jobs in India, Europe and other foreign countries since the United States now values religion over math and science. |

Race-based education initiatives? Shouldn't that be illegal? |

Damn, 1953, do you really not "get" it? I guess we should just wait until the magical day that everyone arrives on the same playing field. Keep dreaming. |

I think we need to throw out race based preferences and go with economic need. Of course underrepresented minorities will still get the help they need, but so will all us po-white trash. But this is not going to happen, so we might as well stick with the racial initiatives so that there is at some diversity in academia. |

BTW, My post was a post "DiF" done in frustration. I just don't have much to add. It's like beating a dead horse all over again. |

I think this is a very good initiative, and don’t be surprised that more announcements like this happen in the future. With the state cutting funding to universities and passing horrible legislation changing how universities are funded for students college will combine there resources to address specific issues instead of going it alone. Also I think universities will start dropping smaller programs so they don’t have to compete with each other which will allow them to reduce cost. |
