Buc's fans seem to really like this guy. Great things to say about him:

Has this guy ever been a Head Coach before on any level? I'm not gonna be to negative right off, but I have to say I don't like it. I thought we would go for a big name guy. I will certainly keep tha' cornbread on the self for now. super d(motordetroit) |

"Right end Simeon Rice, who has more sacks over the past 58 games than any player in the league, says Kiffin and Marinelli are "defensive geniuses in terms of what they do with concepts and theories and how they understand what type of athlete they need." Rice says Marinelli, a Vietnam vet who sprinkles in movie clips with game films, takes coaching to "an art form." http://www.findarticles.com/p/ articles/mi_m1208/is_42_229/ai _n15723521 |

This is awesome....what a ham:
quote:More people mad at Millen posted: Wednesday, January 18, 2006 ESPN INSIDER/BLOG - Clayton Matt Millen didn't win friends the way he hired Rod Marinelli, the assistant head coach of the Bucs. He didn't call any of the other candidates involved in the process after making the hire. Former Saints coach Jim Haslett had been waiting by his phone Wednesday because Millen told him he would fly to Detroit on Wednesday to meet William Clay Ford. Steelers offensive line coach Russ Grimm, one of the early leaders for the job, never heard he was out of the running. Neither did interim coach Dick Jauron. Basically, Marinelli met with Ford and earned Ford's blessing to get a deal done. Millen also didn't announce the finalists to the media as he said he would. Marinelli had to be in Fantasyland on Wednesday. Since coming to the NFL in 1996 after a stint as defensive line coach for USC, Marinelli has been considered one of the best pure coaches in the business. He's been masterful on the defensive line for the Bucs. He's been a prime candidate for defensive coordinator jobs but has been refused the chance to interview for those jobs because he's been under contract. Marinelli let his contract run out and won the lottery by getting a head coaching job

Eh, not bad, I'll reserve judgement until next year. Can the guy pick up the Joey pieces and make a decent leader out him? We'll see. I also think Gary Kubiak would've been a good choice. |

Geez, considering the "big name" coaches available out there, I think this year's crop stunk. There wasn't a clear cut we gotta have him sort of coach out there thatI can think of. There weren't any Jimmy Johnsons, Bill Parcells or the like. I think we did okay at best with the pick of coaches here. He seems like a bit of an older guy who's ready for the next challenge and seems to come with some decent credentials for defense. Like Rrl says, I'd like to see who he's going to get to help our QB situation out- whether it's Joey or someone else. But then the QB selection out there is about as bad as the available coaches too. |

"In a 2003 interview with the St. Petersburg Times, Marinelli said he believed in things like hard work, passion, mental toughness, honor, discipline and hustle." ------------------------------ ---------------------- Lol....sounds like the Marines to me. I think some current players on the roster are going to have some problems. If you're going to go 6-10, it would be nice as a fan to be able to eliminate the doubts about certain players not being in game shape. I have a feeling that's not going to be a problem with this guy. |

I've been anxiously awaiting Czar's POV on this matter, the sports analysts can say whatever they want about the guy, but Czar has the final say in my book. |

Thank God we don't have to lose the one thing that has really mattered since this all began: M & M remains intact. My POV on this is that.. on the surface, it looks like a good move. There were no more certain guarantees out there. We were getting a promising assistant, or Haslett. I was for the promising assistant. |

I agree with Czar's assessment. I think the Lions will improve to 6-10, which will likely be their best record until Marinelli or Millen is sacked in 2-3 years. The Lions have been 21-59 under Millen's leadership (and I use the term very loosely) and perennial losers under the Ford's ownership. I have no faith in either's ability to select coaches or players. |

So now that we know.... with the new coach having a more defensive philosophy, are we gonna draft a top DB with our first pick?__ a few guys come to mind; A.J.Hawk, Paul Posluszny(ckspell) Jack D'Qwell.__ all outstanding DB's. super d(motordetroit) |

Of course, I somehow think Hawk will play linebacker in the NFL...but I could see Millen and the new coaching staff trying to convert him into a DB. |

'Czar'__ depending on the defensive scheme, linebackers and DB's are the same. In today's sophisticated D schemes, you see more 'blitz' schemes, so your DB must be able to do both; cover and blitz. super d(motordetroit) |

Like all coaches that we've had over the last kazillion years, Rod Marinelli seems to know what to say on his first day on the job. Unfortunately games aren't won on a coach's expertise with the words. Let's see where he goes from here. |
