I recall about a year ago there was a little snippet on the tv news about the DMCVB or someone trying to get building owners in the CBD on board to add lights to their buildings to really "light up" the skyline downtown. I know that a number of buildings downtown (CAY, etc.) do have exterior facade lights, they just never turn them on. Recently I noticed that the Bank One building is turning off it's interior lights and actually turning on the flood lights on the exterior of the building to light it up. Does anyone know of any other buildings downtown that have lights that aren't on yet or any other plans in regards to actually lighting up our skyline like most other cities. It's a shame to look downtown and not be able to see all the buildings lit up at night.

I do know that the water boards top is lit and it looks great!!! Of course Compuware has the illuninated entrance. The Guardian's top is lit. i saw a few ohters that i have not seen and I heard as well that others will be joining as well.

I remember last year they were going to enhance some buildings with neon, but I haven't seen or heard anything since.

I did forget that the Penobscot is lit, as well as Guardian and some others are lit as well. The RenCen is sporadic in it's lighting... sometimes half the SBXL logo is lit, sometimes all of it's lit, and tonight it wasn't lit at all... lol... of course it's the night i go down there to grab some pics of it... oh well... but i can't imagine that the Renaissance Center was designed without any more lighting for it... it seems so dark at night downtown in regards to facade lighting... at least in comparison to other cities i've travelled to and stuff... also, any timeline or anything for the completion of the FOX tower?

There was that downtown Detroit skyline rendering showing the city lit up like a Christmas tree, I really hope tons of major towers that are now dark will shine brightly during Super bowl week. The chief offender of course is Comerica Tower.

They also need a lot of those light beacons that shoot a beam of light really far. I see them around Brighton and Wixom off of I-96 sometimes at night and it looks awesome, especially if there are low clouds.

Comerica cannot be lit because there is no place for the lights to shine to. I beleive that the top floors are a library with skylights to let in natural light. Those floodlights would drown out the library.

I recall Comerica Tower being lit with large spotlights when American Idol was in town a few years ago. It was really impressive -- completely transformed the night skyline.

I'm pretty sure Comerica Tower is able to be lit... most architects design their buildings with exterior lights on the facade and what not to show off architectural features and highlights and what not....

the Guardian has some new yellowish light surrounding the top (below where the flag is usually lit up).

I am sure comerica tower will have all interior lights on for the super bowl, as it did for the all-star game...that was pretty neat

There is a relatively deep ledge running around Comerica Tower right below the four pointed gables. Lighting could be placed there between the vertical strips of windows to light the top. (you might want to reference a picture to see what I mean)

I'm actually kinda disappointed that this plan hasn't really taken shape. It seems the Penobscot is less illuminted now than even in the spring, and the Guardian certainly isn't the "dramatic exterior lighting" that was discussed by Sterling about a year ago.

Over the last year, there has been a fair amount of additional building lighting added downtown.

The Guardian, Water Board and DAC have all added really nice exterior lighting. The David Stott is now lit up, the new garage on Woodward and Merchants Row both have new exterior lighting (very nice). The new Opera House garage has really nice exterior lighting, and many other buildings have been lit up as well (the Wurlitzer, for example.) The addition of the new FOX tower sign should also be mentioned.

Restoretheroar: I thought the Penobscot was less illuminated but wasn't sure if I was concocting images in my mind. I bet it's a combo of higher energy prices and mediocre occupancy. And I agree about the Guardian being many notches below "dramatic exterior lighting" that the Sterling group said was going to bathe the guardian at night. It's more like a 500 ft. tall dim historic nighlite, than an illuminated beacon of great architecture on the skyline.

And the water board building's crown is just incredible when it's lit at night. How long has the water board building been lit like that?

yup

As far as I can tell, it was done during the 1930s, but I'm not sure if it was just for a special event, or a regular thing. I found another view taken from atop the Telephone building, with the Guardian showing a few beacons from behind the Penobscot Bldg.

Night Skyline Detroit 1930s

That's all I can find on it. Maybe they were there to guide a zeppelin in, who knows, but it sure looks cool.

according to the manager of the Penobscot they know some of the lights are out/off. They won't admit that they are not sure how to get to some of the bulbs to change them. Wally, the guy that used to take care of the building lighting, was let go when Farbman took over. He once told me how he would have to crawl on ledges and jump down into landings and be pulled back up in order to change bulbs. They did do a nice job of lighting the building but it does look pretty sad in it's half lit state.

It doesn't look good half lit

The City-County building looks terrific flood-lit. Same goes for the NBD/BankOne/Chase building--which is a really great example of 60s modernism with those off-set windows. It is a real challenge illuminating buildings that are primarily glass--for obvious reasons--which is why buildings like the RenCen will sometimes have other adornments--like the neon strip that GM added around the Marriott's tower. The ex MichCon/1 Woodward building is a long-time illuminator with it's multi-colored cube. Comerica Tower would look great if they could pull something off, as would the old Wayne County Building.

Comerica Tower still does look very nice during the week, since it is one of the ownly towers that has nearly every floor lit up during the evening/night...

Ren Cen can only do so much, especially since it is a hotel. Ponch isnt even noticeable at night

Okay...so they lit up the Superbowl emblem on the RenCen..looked nice. The Blue Cross HQ has the big XL lit up in their windows. The water board buildings top is lit and very very bright. The CAYMC looks good lit up..kinda majestic in its own special way. The cheesegrater is lit up as well. Driving through downtown at midnight lastnight ...it almost seem like daytime due to the lights.

The Water Building and Bankone building have been lit up since the All-Star game, so I assume it will stay up after the SB. I hope CAYMC stays up as well...

Blue Cross is always doing something in their windows as well, Christmas tree, ribbon, XL, etc.

Penobscot would look sooo great with more lighting, or at least back to what used to be done

Not only is the BC without lighting; the only buildings in those pictures that do have lighting are Cadillac Tower and the light on top of the Gaurdian Building.

...And that is a huge sign on top of Cadillac Tower!

Is that a weather ball on top of the Penobscot?

http://www.detroitcommerce.com/images/Penobscot_Building_sm.jpg

Weather Ball-MPLS
Northwestern Bank, which became Norwest and eventually Wells Fargo used to have those. The big one was in downtown Minneapolis on the bank building until the massive fire in 1982.

Driving down Woodward tonight the First National building stood out. I despise its bland design but being totally lit it stood out more than others from an immediate perspective. Has it always been totally lit or is this something new?

I was just pondering the skyline light-up issue whilst reading that positive NYTimes article today which has been referenced in several other threads. The article has some good photos of, among other places, Bleu's exterior, Congress and a few other glitzy boites. What struck me, however, was the nighttime skyline shot of downtown shot from Windsor. It looked like a brown-out was in effect or something. Maybe I am just used to the gross waste of energy that cincinnati puts into its skyline every night, or maybe it was just a poor photo, but Detroit needs to get some serious spotlights in action. 150 west jefferson had its crown lit up, the Penobscot upper reaches were visible, but the most prominent gleaming beacon on the fair shores of detroit was the Miler Parking garage west in front of the RenCen on Atwater.

FOX sign is lit up - and it looks really good. Except here is my gripe. It's looks absolutely fantastic when in the classic red/orange, but it also has a million other no so cool light combinations that IMO are flat out cheezy. I guess this is par for the coarse for the Illitche's - they make pizzas for a living.

Overall though, It looks great, and I applaud them for pumping the money into it.

Looks great from lower Woodward - a true eye catching beacon at the end of downtown.

At one end you have the fox sign and the other you have the Hart Plaza obelisk. Pretty cool. Frames the whole strip rather nicely.

Is the obelisk lit up at night? I can't remember.

Now if we could get them to light the flames on the top of the Mich Con building again, that would be really cool!

Flames would be cool, I think they should do them also on angel's night too!

Anyone have pics of how the MichCon building looked at night?

Ndavies,
Those are some awesome pictures. I really like how Ren Cen looks with the logo lit up! Did you take those? I would really like to use it as a wallpaper for my desktop. Can you hook it up?

Yes, I took those about 10 minutes before I posted them.

If you send me an email to ski_with_normd at sbcglobal dot net. I'll send you back copies tonight.

For MichiganShiek - two postcards from the late '60s/early '70s. I always remebered MichCon being lighted with blue lights, never red.

During the holidays the blue/white lighting scheme goes to a festive red/green.

I feel bad for the reporters with rooms behind the superbowl logo. Imagine those spotlights shinning in all night. Even a shade couldn't stop those things.

the penobscot christmas tree lights are pretty wild. They string bulbs in raw sockets every foot on wires ,just like you might see in new construction just with out the cages over the bulbs, there are thousands of bulbs. The funny thing is every year they use new bulbs. So it takes a few days for someone to remove all the bulds and put new ones in. I thought they would have many more broken ones than they do. I would say that 10-15% were broken.they generally come down mid january and go up mid Nov. The building looks real nice since they have repaired all the lighting. The ball on the to is neon and for the 13 years I have been there has always had problems, but at 600+ ft it is kinda windy. Not bad for a 1928 building.

MichCon/1 Woodward looks great in those postcard shots--what a great looking building--a perfect example of Yamasaki's modernism. Personally, though the gas company no longer has title to the building, the cube or "flames" ought to stay blue except on special occasions--that was, after all, how the building was designed. By the way, isn't it great in the postcard shot to see all those lights on in the B-C?

I was watching them test out the new spotlights on top of the RenCen last night around 1am. AMAZING. They are so bright and remind me of pictures of the spotlights on the Guardian Building back in earlier times. They light up the sky like no other spotlights. They put one set of spotlights (4 or 5 lights) on top of each of the individual towers.

This is the best I could do. The spotlights are very hard to photograph. If they move they're too dim.

I really like what they've done with the lighting on the Palms building (State Theater}

The State Theatre looks more amazing than it ever has! Amazing what a little facade lighting will do for a place.

Holy shit! Those rencen spotlights are off the hook. The state theater looks real good too. Now all we need are colored lasers shooting off the top of Comerica Tower.

there are similar lights on the old portion of the dte building and, i think, on a building that is out of my view. at around midnight they started testing out the different colors (they aren't going to remain white the whole time!). cool.

Yup. DTE Energy's got the "Bat Beacons" on top of its General Offices building. Plus, more to come on the Walker Cisler Building, I've heard...

quote:

FOX sign is lit up - and it looks really good. Except here is my gripe. It's looks absolutely fantastic when in the classic red/orange, but it also has a million other no so cool light combinations that IMO are flat out cheezy. I guess this is par for the coarse for the Illitche's - they make pizzas for a living.

I agree - and I'd add that it takes a very classy building and just makes it so tacky. Without that sign the Fox is gorgeous. With it, it's just too flashy. I realize it is historic, but the whole name tower on top really detracts from the beauty of the building and the existing sign.

It just goes to back up what I always say - in Detroit they can't do anything simple and classy and nice, they always have to fuck it up somehow.

And for the Little Caesar's empire, it's verrry appropriate. It is the perfect element of cheese on top!

I was watching all the spotlights testing last night from my new place. The ones on top of the ren cen are very bright but they also have a couple new bright ones across the river in Windsor. Plus the bright ones on DTE and what looks like campus martius. The skyline is quite dazzling these days!

While up until now I've pretty much steered away from mass publicizing of my blog, aside from a few discrete threads, I'm gonna throw a link up here. These past few days I've posted some long, "dear diary" entries that I know a few of you out there have been left asking "Where has supersport been?" Well, I took my "dear diaries" to bloggerland awhile back. I plan on taking lots of pictures this weekend and spending tons of time downtown. I'll give daily updates, maybe even multiple times, so that some of you who can't make it town can hear first hand about what's going on down here. Hope you all enjoy.
