Yesterday I caught wind of a new restaurant that will be opening in the Guardian Building this week called the Karmic Cafe.

I got a look at their menu, and from the serving dishes and biodegradable knives and forks it looks like the folks behind this have REALLY considered every aspect of their business from the view of a clear conscience.

EVERYTHING on the menu will satisfy even the most discerning VEGAN...yet enough to appeal to the larger portion of the population as well.

It is very interesting to see a listing of food choices where MOST appeal to me instead of just one or two...and I'm not even an avowed vegan or vegetarian, just picky.

They will have hours to serve the financial center mostly...8 to 6 M-Th, and 8-3 F...NO weekend hours (yet)...so it is obvious they are aiming initially for the holistic breakfast and lunch crowd.

I met one of their chefs, an energetic and good-natured Jason, and expect really great things from this place.

If only I could find that menu...

This is exciting news! They open this week, Gannon? I'll definitely have to check them out. Thanks for the heads up!

I understand their grand opening is tomorrow, Monday...and I intend on coming as late as possible to remind them that some of us who live here and will support them definitely do NOT have banker's hours!!

I believe that Jason is working his skinny butt off cooking everything on the menu today for their family and friends tryout...but I assume this only because he had to leave a meeting I was in last night, NOT because I'm in their inner circle!

They open Monday and have an extensive menu, as well as a juice bar! I know the head chef and she is very enthusiastic and talented.

I'll see if I can post the menu later.

Also recently opened is Atom's Juice Cafe at Woodward and Golden Gate just South of 7 Mile on the East side of the road. They were previously in Grosse Pointe but were run out of business when Subway sued them, claiming that they had the same menu items, a violation of the strip mall lease agreement. Atom's is 100% vegan, the only all-vegan cafe in the whole state (their fake turkey wraps at the previous spot were NOT the same as a turkey sub from Subway). Atom's was considering opening in the Guardian but it fell through somehow, so I wonder if Karmic is related?

Anyway, as a vegan who occasionally travels substantial distances for good food and who also stops by the Guardian for no reason, this will be bringing me downtown some more for sure.

I'm a meat eater, but both of these restaurants are good news for me [since i like vegan food, and have lots of vegetarian/vegan friends].

I'd love to have the chance to go to the Guardian building more often.

Touché, I don't remember EVER going in there in all my years down here. The financial district is the second or third least known neighborhood downtown for me!

(has at least someting to do with my aversion to parking tickets and other demands on me paying to park my car)

I've got that menu right in front of me, but little time today to type it in. After I get my show report filed I'll see what I can do.

Cheers!

Well, we all may have to wait an extra day for this. I just heard that Monday will be samples only with the first day of real business on Tuesday.

Actually it sounds like we may have to wait just a bit longer- the juice bar is opened up near the Rowland but the diner in the main lobby still has a week or two to go.

damn, and that menu had me hungry!

Juice Bar is listed on the same menu...different phone number...so they are either co-promoting OR otherwise connected.

the diner/sandwich counter is tucked away off the main lobby between the revolving doors at the griswold + congress intersection. the juice bar is upstairs near the rowland so they are separate, at least for right now.

mmm... vietnamese tofu...

This place is going to be GREAT! They're really really going to perk up the lunch scene downtown. While I'm an omnivore, I still enjoy a great vegan meal. I've heard they're going to serve up all organic things and the menu is also going to change seasonally.

For the tree-hugger in all of us, they're even going to recycle all of their clippings to turn it into organic mulch for a Cass Avenue community garden. Bravo to Karmic Cafe!!!!

Well, I definitely need to give y'all an update.
The cafe is still a work in progress. They realized that opening early would jeopardize their longterm goals. So the new format will be a rotating menu. They will cook several things each day, and the menu will most likely be different day-to-day. It will be more in-line with a co-op rather than a traditional resturant.

So I'm excited. This is good for the city and the people behind this are in it for the long haul, with plans for future expansion (sit-down resturant anyone?).

Support our local independant businesses.

Had a chance to check out the Karmic Juice Bar in the main corridor of the Guardian. Very friendly staff that hooked me up with a Wheat Grass shot. After a four day Super Bowl bender my liver needed some cleansing. I can't say that I'm all that experienced with juice bars, but this place a seemingly extensive menu of vegetable and fruit juices as well as smoothies. I encourage all to stop in.

had the tofu scramble yesterday over brown rice- YUM. finally, healthy non-salad options in downtown. (pinching myself)

one thing that was neat that i would love to see catch on everywhere is that their "plasticware" is biodegradable- made from corn i believe. they have a bin where you can drop them once you are finished eating.

Obviously Gravitymachine missed the initial post with the listed hours but kudos to Machoken for the repost. I just got back from there and they've got some amazing juices there and one of the best spots to just ogle architecture- no matter how many times you've been there before.

AGH! Warren & Sterling Heights for lunch is atrocious. Years ago, one of the local ad agencies based in Warren poked fun of where they would go celebrate should they win a major award- and they showed a lot of the greasy spoon diners that happen to occupy the Van Dyke strip.

Now now meaning to sound like a purist or food snob because every once in a great while, a greasy spoon does hit the spot but what's bad about that area is the seemingly lack of variety.

Just finished my lunch from Karmic. Fantastic! I now have a real option for lunch as opposed to having to decide between Jimmy Johns and Quiznos. It seemed like business was good today with a decent sized line at 1:15.
