Okay...so what's up with Mack and Bewick. This area has been the brunt of jokes of comedians from all over. When they want to refer to the worst area in the City, they say Mack and Bewick. I just went to a play, where they referenced Mack and Bewick in regards to dollar hoes.

That following Monday, I got a call from a prospective customer who wanted to meet with me. I said of course where are you located? And he said Mack and Bewick. I really had to take a deep breath because of what I have heard about the area, and I didn't want to offend him. Needless to say I went.

I didn't see any dollar hoes...but I tell you...way too many people hang out and around that place. I had to go back there today...so I took back up with me.

Anyone know, is this really the worst area in the city?

I've been through there many times, I too wonder what the big deal is. Maybe it really comes to life after dark or something, as I'd hardly consider all that bad of an area.

Put it like this Bratt...

A cop was just recently killed on that corner within the last week and a half or so...

Not to mention that I after living for a while in the Dexter/Fenkell area feels the urge to be alot more alert when I roll through that area on the freight...lol

Mack and Bewick! The east-side is often over hyperbolized__ that corner is heaven compared to the 'going-ons' at W.Warren and 32nd!

ya betta' ask somebody:-)

Mack and Bewick - a junction that has significance in that there was a party store there, that sold everything to everybody, no matter what age. The ensuing spilliage on to the street created a hang out scene.

A couple of years ago, I saw a news report about some prostitutes who were killed in the Mack and Bewick area. Some suspected that the murders were related (i.e. a serial killer). I haven't seen any follow-up reports.

Mack and Bewick, Are one of Detroit's deep east side ghettohoods. And The Ghettoman loves it out there. At least the folks who are now living in those well kept up homes have a powerful ghettohood watch programs to keep out the preps and the DEAD (C) KRAK HEADS.

I think it was made a big deal because Hansen Clark kept talking about it in the mayoral race as he was from "Mack and Bewick" and that he was tough. I think it is a fine area...I have a friend that lives there and she doesn't have bullets flying through her window or crack heads in her lawn.

It probably has to do with the fact that if one were taking Mack out of the city to the GPs one would drive by this intersection regularly. Many people who either shape popular opinion in the metro area or are movers and shakers in the CBD live in the GPs. Politicians mentioning this intersection are likely speaking to them as much as to Detroiters familiar with that part of town.

The worst places in the City is that plastic place called Indian Village ... full of "so-called" white-collar-crooks and Stepford wives! They just hide their schitt under a golf-course lawn facade .... AND the CBD with all its HillBilly-Runaway from home-PHONEY-WANNABE-HIP transient loft-dwellers. Go figure!

Mack and Bewick is akin to any other popular "in place." It's always better before everyone knows about it. By the time grannies in Macomb County know Mack & Bewick, you know it ain't even a ghost of its former self.

Although, the unsolved prostitute murders through the 90's helps keep the reputation alive. The murders might be solved, but at least more people would know about them, if the prostitutes would have been white.

Ras,
"The worst places in the City is that plastic place called Indian Village"

Really? I take it that you don't live in that neighborhood then because you'd be assimilating with perceived-upper-crust-white-co llar-recently-moved-to-Detroit -exhillbilly-multi-hyphenated- hipster-wanabies. So you think that by an large they are just a bunch of phonies??? hiding themselves and their "schitt under a golf-course lawn facade"? Or do you just not like nice landscaping?

Seriously. I am sure there are fine people (your friends included) that live in Mack/Bewick neighborhood. Just as there are equally fine people that live in Indian Village. I don't know that I know anyone in Mack/Bewick yet. I've met a few people that live in the village though (I don't live there), and I do subscribe to their yahoo group to get info. From everything I see posted there, and personally observe in the community, they, as a neighborhood, are REALLY active to know one another, support neighborhood activities, look out for one another, and are active in the larger Detroit community.

Eh... not that many Stepford wives in Indian Village these days. There probably were a decent number 50 years ago or so.

Rms... don't get in an uproar... Rasputin thinks it's noble to be poor, persecuted, and scruffy.

He wears such attributes like a badge of honor.

So, if Indian Village is plastic, I guess Mack and Bewick is... "real."

Yeah... "real" shabby... and possibly "real" dangerous if you don't understand just where you are over there.

By the way, I have been in that party store on the corner.
