I can't find the original thread about the sinking of the Lansdowne at a dock in Erie, but it's still there, partially submerged. So far attempts to raise the ferry have been unsucuessful--it's settled a bit deeper in the mud--but another attempt to float it will be undertaken tomorrow. Underwater Marine Contractors of Cleveland is doing the salvage.....

Has the state of Michigan voiced any interest in its preservation?

My understanding is that the State of Michigan wants to turn the Lansdowne into an African World Heritage Museum and send it to all of our coastal cities to further the cause of understanding and equality.

Hopefully they can re-float her.

It would be a sad end for this legendary ship, to finish sunken in her berth in Erie.

Andrew....
....I understand there has been some talk of re-floating the barge (that's what it really is now) and moving it out into Lake Erie and re-sinking her as a artificial reef. I do know it has to be moved by March 1st.

One of the salvage crew posted on www.railroadforums.com that the Lansdowne has been refloated as of Thursday, Feb. 2. What happens from here is anybody's guess....
