I've got Friday night tickets, and I have a feeling it's going to be a madhouse downtown that evening. The tickets indicate you can use the GEM theatre parking garage, however... that will be quite a bear to get anywhere near. What are people thinking about the casino parking lots? |

Speaking of Jessica Alba, I was reading on Detroit Free Press and the paper say that she'll be at the State Fair Grounds Saturday Feb.4. Does anyone know if this is true and the time she'll be there??? I will love to met her in person. |

GM: I've got a couple of friends who work downtown in private lots, so that may be an opportunity. However, I'm not the least bit opposed to hopping on a shuttle and heading downtown. I plan on getting down there relatively early, ~3pm, give or take... |

Geez so he isn't your cup of tea, we get it. Now quit wasting your time by pissing and moaning about us enjoying his show. I happen to find Kimmel extremely funny, as do my 2 friends that will be accompanying me. Plus how often will we get to see Jessica Alba in person. and Christ his bashing was a joke which he apologized for. Try a little forgivness once in a while. Plus what other late show host is coming to Detroit this week? yeah thats what I thought. To top it off I get to check out the Gem Theater for the first time. A huge bonus. |

I'm goin friday! Got 'em from 1iota.com. I requested mine back in december when I first heard he was coming here. They emailed me 2 weeks ago today and let me know they were available and I immediatel confirmed. I was baffled that they didn't cost anything? I don't remember giving credit card info. I thought it was weird to just print out your tickets from the computer since I have never done that for anything. I am wondering about parking also. I wish the weather would be like it was yesterday (sunday) because then I wouldn't mind walkin. I think Kimmel is funny and still laugh from his Man Show days! |

I still bask in the memories of Kimmel on 'Win Ben Stein's Money.' Now that was entertaining! I'm excited to see his show. Had tickets in LA last September and ended up missing the show because he started early... and of course the guest was Pamela Anderson! I guess Jessica Alba will make up for missed opportunities. |

This guy bashed Detroit on national television...and only apologized when ABC forced him to. The apology reeked of all things disingenuous...leaving no doubt he stood by his original statement. The Good Humor man is making his first and last visit to the D...and we all ac'in like we never tasted a snowcone. |

They do have a bar/drink area. I am guessing that drinks will not be allowed in the theater itself but you can get drinks in the lobby/bar area. Think of how the Fischer has the bar thing outside of the theater. Like that but with more of a restaurant feel. |

http://www.realdetroitweekly.c om/article_1033.shtml "The shows will be heavily Detroit-themed. You won’t see a lot of stuff that doesn’t have to do with the Super Bowl or the city, and I think people will be excited to see some of their local characters and places that they go to every day on national television. The truth is that people make a big deal out of that joke that I made, but I’ve been to Detroit a few times and I always have a lot of fun there. I never quite understood why people were so negative about it because I just like a place where people like to drink and eat and watch sports, and it seems like that’s exactly what Detroit is." |

Angry "Kimmel" fans miss out on taping http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll /article?AID=/20060131/NEWS11/ 60131040 The tickets through that 1iota site have fine print right at the bottom that says that the shows are overbooked to begin with. And according to a post here, a whole load of "VIPs" from a comcast/pontiac promotion got to go to the front of the line. (Message edited by yupislyr on January 31, 2006) |

Ooh, how disappointing...I was in the 1iota line, with about 150-200 people behind me (and about 200 in front) and practially NO ONE from the 1iota line got in. I hear (from someone who was only about 10 feet from the entrance, who didn't get in) that only 10 (yes, TEN) people with tickets from the 1iota site got in. Comcast and other corporate entities have rented/purchased VIP tickets for EVERY NIGHT, so chances of getting in with the 1iota tickets are pretty much slim to none. So, so, so disappointing! We have tickets for tomorrow night and are going to investigate in the morning, but we might not even bother...it was sorta chilly out there (which is great for WinterBlast!) Keep the updates coming! |

If this happens every night there will be some very irate people. I understand that they overbooked them but by 400 people that is BS. I will be upset on friday if I don't get in. BTW what time did you get there Marelis to have 200 people in front of you? |

We got there around 5:15 pm. Not as early as we had planned, so we completely were expecting a line and also were a bit unsure if we'd get in, but we were NOT expecting another whole line (not the 1iota line) of 200+ people that they were going to let in before us (the Comcast people you hear of). So, there was about 200 (and that's just a guesstimate) people in front of us in the 1iota line and another whole line they were letting in before they touched the 1iota line. Unfortunately, they did confirm when we were leaving there are corporate VIP parties at the Gem for the show every night this week. If you check out the message boards on www.1iota.com, it gets more and more discouraging...one guy was one of the first 10 people in the 1iota line and didn't get in. I am seriously disappointed! As a warning, all of the "invite only"/free events are going to be ran like this. Capacity at the Bud Bowl is 2500 and they handed out about 5000 tickets to each night. |

"I am seriously disappointed! As a warning, all of the "invite only"/free events are going to be ran like this. Capacity at the Bud Bowl is 2500 and they handed out about 5000 tickets to each night." You know, I really have to wonder what some of these people are thinking. Do they want to cause large sized crowd problems? The number I heard on Bud Bowl (through a Budweiser rep) was 4,000 given, 2,500 to be let in. Bear in mind that many have won tix in radio station contests, etc - and I'll bet things won't go too well at Tiger Stadium if a Kimmel-like situation ensues. Budweiser might have created TOO much buzz for this one. But, on a more positive note, they are expecting to get most of the ticketed persons in for Bud Bowl - I guess they invited a number of "VIP's/celebrities" - many whom they know won't show (since celebs are given tix to every party in town - and they cannot make 'em all). But the rep gave me the exact same advice - be early to be as best sure of entry as possible. On the Bud Bowl tickets, it does state that invite does not guarantee entry. |

so ok i nwas there at 4 today and one of the first people in line and did not get In. No one who got tickets from 1iota.com got into the actuall tapeing of the show. The oferd to let up into other rooms and puit tvs in there with a feed of the show. The only people who did get in were people who had tickets from comcast even thought the 1iota websight said that they were the only way to get tickets. This is just another big FU to detroit from Jimmy Kimmel |

got there at 5- about 50 in front of us in line. waited until 645- line didnt move- nobody from 1iota got in. at no point was there any communication with why we were not getting in. Only Comcast VIP's got to pass the line. Meanwhile the line wrapped way past the DAC and it took until 645 when someone came out and told us that nobody would be getting in and we could "hang out outside" if we wanted to. Total BS. Disgusting. |

That was a corporate audience, bought and paid for. The real folk were left out on the street. That Ilota thing may have been a marketing scam just to collect names and addresses. Tonight was the first time I had seen that show, Kimmel is very lame. On the other hand, if it makes D look good in the eyes of the rest of the country, thats a good thing. Bring jobs and people to Detroit. We need investments. |

Rasputin is right on about how white that crowd was. That was insane, and an ugly bunch to boot. It was *not* a very good representation of Detroit, and I actually felt the same way, they were putting on a white face for the country. On the other hand, if you think about the audience for the Kimmel show, it's predominantly white male (who else would watch?) so was that really so surprising? Was happy to see Thornetta backing up Kid Rock though. |

Man did I get lucky? Am I one of the only 1iota people that got through to something? Although I got there around 4:15 or so, the line was already pretty deep (maybe 30-40), so we hopped in and waited for a ridiculous hour 1/2, two hours when they started calling for the Comcast scabs. Luckily we were pretty high up in the 1iota line and we were some the last ones to be let into the tent just beyond where everyone was lining up (which was heated, thankfully), and waited there for about another hour or more. There was absolutely no communication between anybody inside, no one knew what the hell was going on, seriously. The line finally started moving and began to let in all the Comcast people who were alongside us little 1iota peons. They let a few in from the 1iota line too, and with about 30 (me included) 1iota ticketed people inside the tent, they cut it off. We waited some more, alone in the tent, with no idea what was going on. Then the corporate douchebags showed up and were freely allowed to walk through the side door right in front of us, which had been there now for 3 hours. We had no idea what was going on inside or outside but could hear the “fuck Comcast” chants which were pretty funny. All we do was just stand there and watch as at least 100 or more people walked in front of us (including Mr. David Hall of Rock Financial, who I find to be the most annoying man in the city of Detroit, so we gave him a nice “fuck david hall”, “fuck rock financial” chant). I believe me and about 10 others of 1iota were allowed upstairs to see Kid Rock’s set, which was sweet considering I was front row and about 7 feet from the stage. All in all though, Jimmy Kimmel is not worth 5 hours of my time and what I and many others had to go through. (Message edited by blessyouboys on February 01, 2006) |

I liked that David Alan Greer, who is "actually" from Detroit, didn't know what the city's name meant; but, Kid Rock, who, as everyone seems to agree, is just some big faker, showed Jimmy around Detroit landmarks such as American Coney Island and Henry the Hatter. Black Detroiters really need to get past this whole, "I'm actually from Detroit," thing - because it just divides the region and promotes bigotry. |

It is Kimmel's fault because ultimatly it is his show. These production people represent him. He came to Detroit to make up for comments he made and then to pull this kind of crap is insulting and complete bullshit. If this happens everynight (especially Friday) I will never watch Kimmel again and he can go fuck himself for all I care. |

You don't think that telling 400 people they have a good chance at getting in (the only place to get tickets is what the site said) and let maybe 20 to 30 of them in is not pulling something? If not then please never promise to do anything for me. I understand overbooking the seats when tickets are free, people might not show up. Fine, I get it. But don't outright fuck your fans over like they did last night. People will not forgive as easily this time. It is a slap in the face. |

I think y'all should rent wheelchairs...if they are going to make you wait, at least you'll be comfortable. IF they're NOT from Hollywood, they might give you some slack because of your apparent infirmity and move you in ahead of the Comcast corpor-droids. IF they ARE from Hollywood, you still MIGHT get a little extra treatment...as they position you so the heartless might get a snicker from the cripples. Either way, you're comfortable...and might get a little better handling. Plus...wheelchair racing can be fun. We did it for years out at Metro airport during high school...wasn't a lot to do in the wee morning hours on the westside. |

Rasputin said: "Meguesses Detroit will be shown by the media as a white City for the graces of the Superbowl!" That's really too bad -- because more important than being a gracious host to the Super Bowl... more important than showing visitors just how much Detroit has to offer... is the importance of emphasizing that Detroit is a black city. In fact, forget about the game. Cancel it. Let's just run 24-hour-a-day radio and TV ads that remind everyone that Detroit is a black city. Because that's truly the most important thing in the world. Yeah, that's the ticket. |

Oh, and it's interesting that the biggest, most militant cheerleader on these boards for maintaining Detroit as a black city is a guy who isn't even from here. You have to wonder what his vested interest, his agenda, is. I wonder if he moved here because he bought into that invalid, fallacious "Black Mecca" concept of 10-15 years back? If so, he bought a bill of goods. Anyone, regardless of ethnicity, can live or work in the city, and pay taxes in the city. (Bet that bothers the hell out of him, though... oh well, tuff schitt.) I wonder how he will react if he starts seeing some of the perceived CONTROL that he values so much slipping away -- as the Latino population in the city reaches 25 to 50 percent in the next decade or 15 years? Or if more and more Arab-Americans move in? Or (gasp!) more folks of Caucasian ancestry? Maybe his head will simply explode from all the accumulated bitterness and frustration... |

Even though I feel it is foolish to stand on line for a chance to jock on a Detroit basher...I admit I was sick to my stomach seeing that generic crowd, and thinking about you standing on the street. ...but what did you really miss? That show was a total exercise in Detroit pretense. I'm gonna have to agree with Raz...Kid Rock's set was awful. His new material, with those trite lyrics, would not have worked in 1982....which is where it sounds he ripped the style from. Was that Karen Newman singing backup and acting like a rap groupie slut? Kimmel has done nothing wrong or bad since he's been here. He's making nice with some Detroit folks and doing his regular talk show schtick. Why is it so important to people. We need to lighten up on this. The same goes for Kid Rock. The guy is loyal to this city, doesn't take himself too seriously, and works pretty hard to provide musical entertainment. If you don't like his music (or if you agree with Ras and he's not black enough), too bad. Grow up and stop the hating. |

By the way, I've been to both Letterman and Leno shows. The Kimmel people had no idea what was going on. Poor organization and total chaos during the pre-show. I was one of the last to get in and there were A LOT of people left out in the cold (literally). No way that many people should have been left out. |

Good times. the person two people ahead of me was the last to make it into the theatre. the rest of us were invited back for the viewing party, or to the banquet room to watch the show live with an open bar (although they stopped serving while the show was being taped). If I wouldnt have been held up at work, I wouldve made it in to theatre. Plus, it only was a little chilly after the sun went down. Had a good time though; the Kimmel people were really trying to accomadate everyone, i think, but their communication tactics were a little off. |

Panson, Ya think maybe it had something to do with the fact they were filming on location for the first time and in a theatre that held 350 people as opposed to the usual number of I'm guessing 1,500 or so? I thought they did an excellant job working with what they had and the small size kept it very personal, especially when you're in the second row and the hot ass blonde who kept climbing up the ladder to get on stage was just inches away. LOL As for the after party, well I had to run my dog downriver tonight AFTER showing my buddy around downtown, so it's been a busy night to say the least. |

So nobody told the Kimmel crew that the Gem only held 350 people before they issued twice as many tickets? C'mon young man - it was poor planning; simple as that. Tell people at 5:00 (when it was obvious) that they are not getting in instead of making them stand in the cold for 3hrs. |

Panson, Poor planning, are you serious? They could either send everybody home not getting in at 5pm and have no footage outside. Or, let them hang out till almost time they start recording, thus having a large crowd outside, making it look way bigger than it really was...as far as events. They knew exactly what they were doing. They did the same thing at Tiger Stadium I am told, gave out a few thousand more tickets than they will allow in. |

Most of the late night talk shows, with the exception of Letterman, have pretty small studio audiences - smaller than you would think. I've not been to Leno or Kimmel, so I can't speak for them, but I wouldn't be surprized if the Gem is just as big as his LA studio. |

They said there were only about 40 seats on the ground floor, I don't imagine there are too many LA studios with only 40 seats on the ground floor. |

Proof Detroit needs the UA to be restored. Actually, Kimmel should have been held in Ford Auditorium. I think that house will seat 4000. Of course who knows what kind of shape its in. |

Well, like I said, I can't vouch for Kimmel in LA but I have been to Craig Ferguson in LA (television city), Conan in NY (rock center), and Carson Daly in NY (SNL studio 8H, rock center) and all of those are smaller than 350 cap. Conan is tiny as is Ferguson. Letterman is the exception being in a legit theater as appossed to a TV studio. But 1,500 is huge for a regular late night show, and I doubt even Letterman's place is that big, considering it probably was retrofitted for the show and some of the capacity got knocked out. |

The Kimmel party, for those of us left out in the cold yesterday, was very cool. We got there around 10:30 (we were told we had to be in line by 10:45). We had to wait a little bit, but it was completely tolerable. We got free pizza and Faygo while in line and we were allowed to take it to our seats (they also were serving hors dourves and passed out bottles of water). Once Jimmy came out and saw no one was drinking "real drinks", he had his people pass out Coors Light to everyone. He brought everyone out on stage and introduced them, then we settled down to watch the show. JK honestly went to each row in the theater and chatted, took pictures, talked on people's cell phones, etc. I was a little disappointed to not attend a "live taping", but they did a great job of "making it up to us". A very cool experience! Thanks to the Kimmel people for thinking of this. |

The Letterman "Ed Sullivan" theatre (ne:Hammerstein theatre) has been de-seated for the purposes of the Letterman show to about 350, which apparently is what TV people consider to be workable. If you notice, when they show the balcony, there is a huge white wall at the back of 10 or so rows, looks like metal stud and drywall, and the stage extends WAY out into what once was the main floor. |

Did you guys watch it on friday night? We were seated right next the the knitting lady from the Red Wings game in the front row of the balcony. It was a great show and Kimmel crackd some pretty funny jokes at Jessica Alba's expense. |

A couple of nights ago, Kimmel ran a segment about relatives in Detroit in the early automotive industry. While preparing some photos for the OCF thread I ran into this gent in a photo labelled "Single cylinder engine repair dept." at the Cadillac factory around 100 years ago. Sure looks like Kimmel to me. (This is not a photoshop, just a crop from the original.) |

To 1953: American Coney Island is NOT considered a Detroit Landmark by us Black Folk!! Just a place to get some unhealthy SLOP that looks like puke on a bun!! and neither are those places Rock showed that only hosted drug-infested suburbanite RAVE parties!! Go figure ..... in a City that's 80-85% BLACK!! Black-atcha ..... waiting for some white folk to get over the fact that they ain't running this schitt!! (It's called "white supremacy" of those that want us Black folk to 'just get over it!!' Gonna be as tuff on your ass as the Jews are on Hitlerite Germans on the History Channel ..... We ain't FORGETTING!! |

Rasputin - you sound a wee bit upset. What do you consider are the landmarks of Detroit? In other words, where would you have taken Kimmel? I'm genuinely curious. |
