If we bag Martz, we might break .500. Remember what Martz did witha nother wash up QB?

What scares me about Martz being the O coordinator is that if he signs for less than a handful of years, is he just gonna come in, do well and then bolt to a head coaching job elsewhere? I'd like to see a longer term commitment here with this guy.

Martz backs out deal! Lions didn't want to pay what he wanted!

Somehow making as much as the coach does seem a bit odd. Makes me wonder about what were Martz' expectations now.

Say goodbye to any attempt at a running game.

Czar.. expand on that a bit more. I have to learn what Martz is all about. I watched him coach only a handful of times and can tell you nothing about his style.

Alt:
It's goodbye to the stale west coast offense, hello to run up the middle most of the time then air it out every couple of downs for the big play. This should fit Joey's style (tongue in my cheek?)

He has a stubborn insistence on passing too much. I don't have any statistics off hand, I'll try and dig some up, but I know that in games where the Rams ran a more balanced offense, their record was significantly better. Yet, ever since the Rams Super Bowl win and the heyday of Kurt Warner, his ego dictates throwing 45-50 times a game. If the Rams fell behind by as few as 7 points, he abandoned the running game.

Given the Lions personnel (an unsettled QB situation and one decent, inconsistent receiver in Roy Williams) I fear the offense could be even more of a train wreck.

Marinelli talked about a Martz led offense that consistently has high YPC. No doubt, nothing can be said truer about Martz then he uses the pass to set up the run...but he has had success because his passing schemes always get somebody open, thus his reputation of "spinning QB's out of yarn."
Move the ball with the pass...soften the D, and then BAM...shove KJ down their throat.
The greatest show on turf? It can happen this year...we have the parts or Martz would not have chosen Detroit. I bet he cant wait to get his hands on this offense...to put his stamp on and mold our young "talented" recievers. You know Martz will lobby for CR. The big question is at QB. I dont think the front office even knows how the QB situation will shake out.

Am I being too optimistic? Of course...happens every off-season. I save my pessimism for the first week of September

However Martz has personally molded two no-name QBs into two decent-good QBs (Warner/Bulger), imagine what he can do with Harrington.

Man cornbread tastes good.

Does this lean more toward Joey being gone or staying? I want him out of there. I lean more toward wanting Charles Rodgers to stay only because I feel anyone, under the right leadership, can move toward a positive. I believe CR can be a total plus for this team. Of course, I could be way off on that.

My bottom line is that I want our receivers to run and catch on more than three routes. A varied passing game is essential.

I think I personally lean toward the running game complimenting the passing game, but within balance. From my perspective, this might be the move I was looking for.

"we have the parts"

Uh, I disagree. No QB, one raw, unpolished receiver, an unproven RB and no offensive line.

My Lion optimism died about five years ago, though it lived a healthy 33 year life.

To love the Lions is to be masochistic...we are all in love with our pain, we would be lost if they started to win!
I do believe that Martz opinion is that we have the raw parts to have success running his offense. If he did not believe that, no amount of money would have brought him to Detroit.

Even though the QB situation is undetermined...I feel alot better about it's prospects with Martz in the fold. Of all the free agent options available, I think any one of them has a great chance to experience success with Martz's system. It's a QB friendly system because it gets guys open...plain and simple. He took a grocery clerk and turned him into a world champion. When Warner went down, plug in Bulger and the offense did not miss a beat.

I do not wish to see Joey take another snap for this organization...but that might not be the reality. I think we are looking to sign a free agent to be the starter. If we decide to pay Joey, it will be money we are willing to pay a backup. Of one thing I'm certain...Harrington will never inherit any job...in Detroit or elsewhere. From here forward, any job he gets, he earns.
