Top Ten Reasons Why Detroit Is Better Suited For Super Bowl

Last Updated:

This week, players, fans, sportswriters, corporate types and wise guys of all kinds are descending upon Detroit – or Destroy It as they used to call it when I lived there.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue chose Motown as the site of this year’s Super Bowl shortly after telling San Diego that Borrego Springs would freeze over before we’d get another game unless we build a new stadium.

After spending two years living across the river in Windsor, Ontario (the Tijuana of Canada), I think I can truly say that Detroit is a better choice than America’s Finest City. Here are the top ten reasons why:

10. Indoor stadium free of odors from the surrounding city.

9. No need for sunscreen on Detroit River beaches.

8. Carjackers provide endless source of rental cars.

7. Boarded up buildings much more esthetically pleasing than dumpy old Gaslamp Quarter.

6. Starbucks coffee served in bulletproof cups.

5. A week filled with festive plant closures.

4. Gambling casinos aren’t located in the middle of nowhere.

3. Murder rate assures that plenty of last-minute tickets available of the big game.

2. Stevie Wonder is better than Stephen Bishop.

And the number one reason why Detroit is better suited for the Super Bowl:

1. After the game, folks won’t move there and jack up the real estate prices.

But don’t blame NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. After all, he’s looking at the world through Coke-bottle glasses.

Larry Himmel's bio says that he is from Chicago, and did a stint at CJOM in Windsor. Wonder why he is Doggin the D.

From the website:

"Seeking "fame, fortune and sunny weather," he left the Canadian chill and headed west to San Diego""

Instead he ended up looking like a blond David Gest

Back in '84 when the Tigers played the Padres in the World Series, the late Chicago writer Mike Royko observed the following in deciding who to root for (paraphrased).....

"People from Detroit have a tattoo of an eagle on their arm. People from San Diego have a tattoo of a butterfly on their hip. I'm pulling for Detroit........"

According to Fortune magazine, San Diego is so broke "the city can't borrow money in public markets because its bond ratings are either too low or, in the case of Standard & Poor's, nonexistent."

http://money.cnn.com/magazines /fortune/fortune_archive/2005/ 11/28/8361961/index.htm

And we thought we had it bad.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it "San Diego" - which means "a whale's vagina".

I'm Ron Burgundy...go fuck yourself San Diego.

Yeah, it was a HUGE corruption scandle that the national media touched on for a quick moment, and then dropped it like it was hot. It was all kinds of ugly. But remember, San Diego has "perfect weather" so you it's not fashionable to bash it. lol Their former mayor ran their cities finances straight into the ground with little fan-fare. If only Detroit was that lucky.

After 50 plus years in Detroit, 12 of them living downtown, I moved to San Diego in 2003. You won't have to worry about me and the wife moving back and possibly "jack up real estate prices." We'll be renters the rest of our lives in San Diego if need be.

By the way, car insurance rates are probably 60 percent that of in-city Detroit's, even with so many cars being stolen and disappearing to Mexico.

That said, I hope Detroit has a sucessful Super Bowl.
