Interesting article from the English version of Der Spiegel (Cafe may be able to get us a print copy of the story) on China building what they're calling "Detroit of the East". Hitler's architect's (who played a major role in the mystique and rise of Nazism) son is the architect of record for the project.

BV, thanks for the link. There was an article I posted a while back on a thread I started which touched on this too ...

economist article

(In case ya can't read the article, I quoted it in the older thread Exporting Detroit's business model ...)

It is a powerful beast that was created and unleashed in Detroit.

Yay Detroit, it is a terrible and wonderful place!

Crazy architecture that wouldn't work. Hitler's genius architect basically wanted to rebuild Europe's most famous landmarks, 10 times as big, in Berlin. And he didn't make up for his lack of originality with engineering skills either.

Berlin is an old Slavic name meaning swamp or wet place. Had Hitler been able to build "Germania" it would have been so heavy it just would have sunk into the soft ground.

And the construction was so shoddy that what wasn't blown up has completely deteriorated in only 50 years.

Rberlin's not joking.

Look at other cities around the globe that were built in swampy areas, or in areas where there was little bedrock.
