Typical Detroit style, some asshole decided to cap somebody near Campus Martius. Everything that was built up, all the positive shit, it all just came crashing down. I was probably 200 yards from where it took place, jokingly when I heard it I said to my friends "Don't worry, just some AK fire, nothing to worry about. Then I said seriously, just fireworks or something." It wasn't for a good 15 minutes that I found out it was an actual shooting. So much for restoring our national image, Detroit managed to fuck that up. |

Of course the FREEP can't wait to report something bad. F***ing assholes can't we just look good for once. I was there tonight what a great night and of course the papers and news will carry this dumb piece of shit as the lead story. |

The papers aren't the assholes. The guy who opened fire is. Do you really expect them to ignore this? Honestly. Are you that stupid? It's Super Bowl week. Someone gets capped in the part of town they've been touting as the greatest-thing-since-sliced-br ead. You expect the papers AREN'T going to cover it? It's comical how ridiculous some of you people are. Come on. Kind of hard to "look good" during Super Bowl week when someone gets shot on Woodward. That's Detroit's problem- not the newspapers'. They're doing their job- it's not their fault Detroit is once again offering them prime fodder when it's in the spotlight. |

The End. Really, what else can one say? The only silver linning is that this didn't go down in the middle of the day in C-Mart with children around. Detroit would have never got another fair chance in the media ever again, and this sure as hell isn't going to help anything. I'm usually not for censoring a crime, but the city needs a good, old-fashioned cover-up right now. |

I'm officially throwing in the towel. There is nothing that can be done, the only thing that could save us is if the shooter is from out of town...not likely, The media is going to have a field day and justifiably so.. (Message edited by detroits_own on February 04, 2006) |

How can one person be so ignorant? No penalty is to stiff for this animal. This criminal just opened the flood gates and they may never be closed again. I hate the ignorance of gun violence. Particularily in a carnival atmosphere with so many innocent and uninvolved people standing around. Maybe it's time for all of us to hit eight mile. White black etc... just get out. I feel like giving up. So many countless people worked so hard and then this. Amazingly sad. |

It's good that you feel that way. Unfortunately, many of the people that were warming up to the idea of giving Detroit a chance have lost the little faith they probably already had, and that's a huge group of people. |

Whatever. This has happened before. We ALL come back here as part of our usual lives. This IS part of the true Detroit. Best thing we can do is business-as-usual tomorrow. Chin Up, Shoulders Back, Smile on Our faces. In the early seventies, merely a couple of years after national news coverage of guardsmen mobilized on our burning town, we heard a quiet voice from a pig-tailed girl gently goading us to "Say Nice Things About Detroit". Emily was right. Let's do it. The World is Here to party... |

The Doppler-radar weather at 4:30 AM doesn't appear that it's going to be too bad for the rest of Saturday. Heavy fog was predicted, yet there was none of that here. The temps should be above freezing at the surface until 8 PM or later. CKLW, Windsor says 4 inches snow, maximum. But, decide for yourselves. Another big false alarm - like the last one? Oh it was a shooting for sure. My friends and I were 10 feet away from it. Saw gun flashes started running south down Woodward past Redsquared and stuff trying not to trample the people that feel down in front of us and the trying not to get trampled when I fell. Never been so scared in my life. I will post more later I am still shaaking and need sleep. |

Well I guess it could be worse, remember the Olympics in Atlanta? I suppose I should STFU and not jinx anything as game day has yet to arrive, we are all holding our breath. And I don't think that the snow will be good, but it's out of our control so no use complaining about it. How are they going to plow downtown streets that are choked with traffic? I sat at Broadway and Grand River last night for a good 10 minutes and didn't move an inch. The only thing at the winter blast that depended on the snow was the sled dog races and even then they were using the sleds on wheels that they use to train the dogs in the fall when there isn't any snow. |

Lmichigan, there were still children there. the first sign of something bad was happening was a very scared looking father pushing his 8ish year old girls in leopard print coats through the crowd. Then 5 or 6 shots. I am noy letting this change my opinion of the D but let me tell you I won't be back to the NFL Experience today. I am not wanting to go back and relive that so soon. |

If these punks are bold enough to pop off in the middle of the fireworks and the superbowl, you know what it must be like everyday on the block. Folks said they where not going to hide Detroit's problems. Sure enough Detroit biggest problem showed up front and center. Sad part is no amount of improvements downtown or elsewhere is going to stop this anytime soon. Its cultural. |

Crime happens but life still goes on. I am thinking about Baltimore and DC after hearing this news. They both have high murder rates although both have been dipping ever so slightly. But, both of their populations have increased in the last three years. And, the movement to continue the tide to make neighborhoods better continues in both. Murder is serious but it is not sensationalized. Perhaps that is really Detroit's problem. Residents hopefully understand that crime is still going to occur even in the best of situations. 9-11 had a horrible impact on NYC but people did not give up on the city. If anything, residents love it that much more. Its sad that this shooting happened but who knows who was shot and why. An old expression, when you play with fire, you get burned. As a city resident, don't let that stop your belief in Detroit. You knew it from the get-go that crime is still going to happen. |

Mother F***ers. It takes a small, ignorant man to pull something like that. I'm seriously distressed. Almost EVERYONE in the media was giving us a fair chance before this. We've had a lot of shootings in our history. This single incedent will no doubt have one of the worst impacts for all those whom are fighting to bring back this city. That poor woman. How did this guy get away?! Aren't there a billion of federal and local law enforcers around? |

This really sucks, that poor woman. I assume, however, that the shooter knew his victims, they say it was after a fight, so its not like people just go randomly shooting other people. Don't forget, someone was murdered right outside (or was it in?) the Taste of Chicago a few months ago, again right after a fight. People are just dicks nowadays. I hope the other victim is alright, and the shooter is brought to justice soon. |

Yes, but what about the security? I'm living in Chicago right now... so I haven't been able to check it out. But my assumption is that there is a huge effort to protect these events from terrorist activity. Shouldn't they also react immediately to someone that fires several shots?? |

so, let's run this down as to how the media is going to rightfully play this: 1. Center of the Super Bowl festivities 2. Security/police/etc. everywhere, or so they said there would be 3. Hundreds if not thousands of people in very close vicinity 4. Guy pulls out a weapon, fires it multiple times, injuring multiple people 5. Guy gets away without a trace 6. And, of course, this has never happened before, right? Oh, it has? And this one got away, too? Maybe Detroit isn't so safe after all. Where were all the police? Why did we come here again? Isn't that fantastic? The world came, and Detroit opened fire. The media is going to spin this like crazy, and you know what? it isn't undeserved. |

Oh come on Aram, the media will say what they will say, but you know what, a few weeks ago that kid was murdered in Clinton Township because some guy was pissed off at him. This happens all the time everywhere, not just Detroit, and I guarantee that I could walk into any public place and open fire, there aren't metal detectors on the street. I just checked CNN.com, FoxNews.com, MSNBC.com, ABCnews.com, and MSN.com, and the story isn't on the front page on any of those. Of course we'll hear it sometime, but not yet. This isn't going to change how I feel about Detroit, or how I feel about assholes who need to control their anger but instead resort to gun violence, same ole shit, different day. |

There were police everywhere throughout downtown last night so this is not a security issue. Frankly, we've never seen so many police officers at any event anywhere before. Here's what the Detroit News is reporting: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=/20060204/U PDATE/602040438/1003/METRO It took a while but the news items are starting to appear. Hopefully everyone will just take it for what it was...an argument that escalated. The parties involved may have been known to each other. But it's not like it was a robbery or a random shooting. Whatever the situation turns out to be, we have to continue to work towards making Detroit as wonderful and vibrant and decent a place to live as possible. |

yes, but his murder didn't happen in the midst of the largest annual media event in human history. Broken_main, if I'm not mistaken, they arrested a guy in conjunction with the fireworks shooting too, right? and it ended up he was the wrong guy. innocent until proven guilty. |

It wasn't Detroit, you asshole(s). Detroit was - and is - at its best. Police were in full force, everything was running at peak capacity and performance. What this situation is is one jackass with too much to drink outside a trashy club. Sometimes, you just cannot prevent plain stupidity, no matter how much you plan. Blame too much alcohol. Blame assholes like that dick from Warren who gloated about carrying his gun downtown in yesterday's Freep. Blame trashy clubs who cannot maintain control over their patrons. To beat up on the city, to diminish everyone's hard work, to give up on creating a community - foolish, short sighted and premature, given the lack of concrete facts. And the media is playing it quite well; and they should be commended for not sensationalizing the story. Only the facts are being presented. The sensationalization, on good ole Detroit Yes!. Detroit's boosters - the real emeny. |

Aram I agree with everything you said except this: "Isn't that fantastic? The world came, and Detroit opened fire. The media is going to spin this like crazy, and you know what? it isn't undeserved." All I'm saying is, you can't blame anyone but the guy with the gun, nobody can stop a crazy guy with a gun. You mean to tell me that joe-out-of-towner is not gonna chalk this one up to the fact that this event was in Detroit?! Hell, even joe-suburbanite will do that! Yes, this happens everywhere. Yes, it's just the result of one person's isolated action. But the fact is, Detroit has a reputation for violence. And, when we were finally able to get positive national media attention someone f**ked it up. Aram summed it up best "The world came, and Detroit opened fire." |

Someone f-ed it up. But that someone was not Detroit. And as Detroiters and/or "Detroit boosters" living out of the region (does that include Ann Arbor?), you should be spreading that message. Not falling into typical, blame Detroit bullshit. Even our media is currently making that distinction that the shooter was the problem, not Detroit.. Anyhow - y'all have fun sitting at your computers and thinking of trite headlines and ways to score props with each other through anticipating the "world's" reaction. Hey - maybe your handle and post can be quoted in the MetroTimes. That'd be real cool... I'm going to enjoy the weekend's festivities. |

Yeah, my initial post where I stated "Detroit managed to fuck that up" really wasn't what I meant. It's not Detroit's fault, but if this story breaks into the national news it WILL be viewed as "Same old Detroit." |

instead of bitching about it or pointing fingers try giving some thought to possible solutions. We all know how many people carry around here. Even getting a CCW is a snap. So what can be done to prevent drunken bar brawls from turning into shootings? |

You know, did anyone think before having virtually every party feature rappers? Who celebrates thug culture and guns more? They could have made more of an effort to have more variety of entertainment. |

Could be worse. http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/ asiapcf/02/04/manila.stampede/ index.html Lilpup, I would hardly say getting a CCW is a snap. Have you read the paperwork? There are probably 4 dozen restrictions that would not allow one to be eligable. |

A small number of people are holding the entire region hostage and virtually imprisioning hundreds of thousands of people in poverty and isolation. I'm sure this guy has a history of multiple arrests and the only question I have is why he wasn't permenently warehoused in a penitentary. |

Lilpup, if one has a CCW, it is illegal to carry when drinking or to carry in a bar. I guarantee you that these assholes did not have CCWs. |

I mean, what sort of fucking moron does something like this when Detroit has its chance to shine? I hate to say it, but Pffft is totally right, its that I'm so tough don't fuck with me attitude that brought this shit on. Jesus Christ I'm so pissed off right now. When will people learn? |

Sport, I write that based on the people I know who have CCWs. Drm, there are a lot of things illegal - doesn't stop 'em from happening. Back to the question - we alll know there are a shitload of guns in the area, permitted and not. This is hardly the first shooting outside of a bar or club in the city. So how to prevent stuff like this from happening? |

It's over ladies and gentlemen we will NEVER recover from this. Those people talking about Atlanta amd Chicago fail to remember Detroit is in a deeper hole than both of those cities combined. We could have afforded for NOTHING to go wrong let alone the worst possible thing. This is another "1984 police car burning" never to be forgotten. |

I've been pereusing ESPN.com and Suntimes.com (Chicago), and they don't mention anything. I think the national media would only pick it up if it was right outside Ford Field or something. I think Detroit should take a cue from Dodge City and make it illegal to carry a gun in town. You can have one in your home, you can transport one out of the city (like heading north for hunting), and you can have one at a gun club/shooting range. That's it. I'm so sick of people acting like this is the old west and shooting each other anytime there's an argument. Being bumped in a crowded club is not means for justifiable homicide. |

I always thought that the clubs should be in their own district, and out the way of everything else. It would be easy to police, and cut down on the riff raff that way. |

Hooha, I wasn't there or anything, but I think this is deeper than an argument about being bumped on a crowded sidewalk. You don't shoot someone 4 times "just because" It sounds personal to me.... |

Pffft & Carrie, rappers and "thug culture" did not shoot anyone. While is sad to see people get shot and die, this shit happens. Like I tell people all the time, gun violence in Detroit is not some random act. It is the result of personal conflicts. 20 people didnt get shot, not that it makes it any better but to insinuate that hip hop/rap influenced this is any respect is idiotic. That's like saying just because I watch the Soprano's then im goin to murk/murder and dismember someone for any indiscretion. If you wanna analyze the cultural implications of violence in American society then do so but you trivialize this event with biased assumptions about "thug culture". |

Well I have a gang of friends all going downtown tonight (going to Capers first for dinner)...don't let it stop any of us from going down and supporting Deeeeetroit! BTW I went to the new bar last night and saw a bunch of you fine folks there - Cliff Bell's behind Kales. Great crowd - it was where all the REAL Detroiters were. Fun time. |

somee have picked it up, but most are saying 'outside an area of bars' or 'a fight led to' and are mentioning it was 1:30 a.m., people from Michigan, and police saying it's an isolated incident - all these little bits of info will reduce the national impact of the story. If we get dumped on today and the snow clearing plan works (or doesn't) - that story will see more play, IMHO. |

Here comes "Ilovedetroit" again...at least Aram is honest about who HE is...can YOU say the same? And please stop the proud Detroiter bit. That probably isn't true given your multiple bogus claims about everything from your RESIDENCE, to employment/income, gender, race, sexual orientation, political affiliations, event attendance, etc. You probably weren't even there. |

Treez....what I mean is, people need to get off this tough guy attitude, I didn't say anything about thug culture, a lot of people around here carry that chip on their shoulder...its one of the main reasons I want to leave Detroit, I feel like I'm too happy, nice and easy going to live here. I know its a random act, and it happens all the time, but can't people just have arguments? Why do they have to feel that they have to "show you." It sucks, I hate it. |

Let's see, the person who tries to downplay a serious incident (shooting)...attacks other forumers with name calling, unwanted sexual advances, etc...and regularly makes bogus claims about everything from his/her residence, employment/income, gender, race, sexual orientation, political affiliations, event attendance, etc. is calling ME a crackhead.
