Where was all this outrage and call to action when a millage to fund this jewel was rejected? Where was all the outrage when police precincts were closed?? Apparently Detroit is supposed to care fore the regions jewels while everyone else enjoys lower property taxes.

Who needs the Detroit Zoo? Detroit is a zoo!!

CLOSE THE ROYAL OAK ZOO AND PUT A FENCE AROUND DETROIT AND MAKE IT THE REAL DETROIT ZOO!!!

lapouttre@hotmail.com writes:

Well said Tony. That comment was insightful and well written. However, if you want Detroiters to understand it, you may want to translate it down to a 2nd grade reading level. Remember, 49% of Detroit adults are illiterate. Which means half of the city can't even spell "zoo".

quote:

I hate Detroit. What a waste.

JWilliamsToledo@BEX.NET writes:

quote:

True enough, it was the whites who left the city, and now the blacks say they can run it. We see how that is working. True enough white businesses are coming back, sure to follow whites into the city. Can the city keep them? Brush Park is not being revitalized by blacks. Most of the money pumping into the city is 'white money.' The city needs this!

gdg@comcast.net writes:

quote:

BR Collins and Monica Conyers are an embarrassment to the city and the region. However, the morons who elected them truly earn the city the title of IRRELEVANT USA

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If no one is bashing you that board, you're doing something wrong.

What the CC should be worrying about is the way their getting trounced on this board.

I agree, posters on this board are by and large infinitely more intelligent :-) But posters on the freep message board represent a much larger slice of opinions in this region.

Put it this way, Metro:

#1. Do a seach of this forum;
#2. Count how many times someone has argued for creating a fence around a certain part of Michigan;
#3. Decide for yourself from there.

The city is still wondering WHY our people is moving out the city. I'm going with Brook Patterson's idea and rename the zoo.

By George, that's it! Rename the zoo and everything will magically fix itself. Duh!

Good luck getting Oakland County voters to unclinch their fist around their "low" property taxes to support a cultural institution.

What's the point, that there are ignorant, prejudiced and stupid people out there that don't respect Detroit and Detroiters? I think we've known that for a pretty long time. Posting the Freep comments here simply reconfirm that and add fuel to the fire.

There are some more thoughtful comments on the Freep board as well, but posting those won't enflame the emotions on this topic and reinforce the "us" versus "them" mindset we apparently need.

The comments on the arts tax failure on the other thread helps reinforce the "us" versus "them" attitude, so lets focus on the divisions between people. Why talk about how close the vote was, that 46% of Oakland and 57% of Wayne voted "Yes"? Why talk about how the vast majority of people of SE MI, city and suburb, all seem to enjoy and appreciate the zoo and want to find a way to keep it open? Why talk about how solving the zoo issue can be a precursor to more regional cooperation? It's more satisfying to bitch about the evil "them".

Why don't we have regionalism? We obviously don't really want regionalism. Even those on the "enlightened" side seem to delight in pitting one faction of the region against the other. We're our own worst enemy.

Looks like the zoo issue is just another wedge being driven into the Detroit/Suburban and White/Black matters. Sigh.

Maybe we should find some of the outraged people and follow them to the grocery store. Get in line in front of them, have the person scan your groceries then casually state that the person behind you will pay. After seeing them go crazy with outrage just say "You're welcome for the zoo for all of these years"

I think you guys are looking past the real issue here.

To the suburbs the Zoo is closing and according the media the council botched it up. To them it is just another in a long line of screwups by Detroit and its corrupt leaders.

Then today they turn on the TV to see themselves called Devils and plantation owners and this that and the other you expect them to want to help out.

This whole issue was played by the media and every second of it is racial.

Here is a map of support for Proposa K (the arts/culture millage). Note the big white area which is Macomb County, who decided to not even participate in the vote.

Some will argue that the cultural institutions are mainly located in Detroit, however, how many Detroiters actually go to the Zoo? DIA? Belle Isle Aquarium? Yet Detroiters overwhelmingly supported the millage.

I suspect if we did a mapping of the complaints about the Zoos closure, the map would show up inversed.

Jt1 - You are correct. MC opted to not even participate in the millage, that is why it is white. Only WC and OC even considered the millage even though they ultimately turned it down.

As a Macomb County resident, I have to say that the reason Macomb County opted out on the vote was plain and simple.... aside from the Macomb Center and Emerald Theatre, there are no "Arts" in Macomb County..... unless you include Hooters! :-)

Downtown Mt. Clemens. It was a C. Howard Crane designed theatre (same architect as Fox, State, Opera House, Orchestra Hall) that has seen a lot of activity in the last few years. KRAWLSPACE could fill in the details since he works there.
