It was suppose to be a public hearing about the future of the Detroit Zoo and the Detroit City Council’s efforts to save it. But today’s hearing in the 13th floor auditorium of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center has been anything but that. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060301/NEW S11/60301006 |

It doesn't matter. The $4 million funding is gone and won't return in its former self. The Legislature will force the issue of transferring ownership to the Zoological Commission if it grants another. None of those "Hire Detroiters" covenants from the CC will apply. Face it. This episode was but a prelude to Detroit's state takeover. Detroit cannot be trusted in financial matters, and it shows. Also, expect the near-junque bond rating to be adversely affected too. Detroit doesn't live in a vacuum. (Message edited by livernoisyard on March 01, 2006) |

Historically they haven't. We certainly got the whole "go east side" play-by-play. |

Worst-case scenario? Early 2006: Council disapproves proposed arrangement again. Spring 2006: Zoo closes; staff terminated; animals sold. Mid-2007: Money no longer available to maintain vacant zoo property, which falls into neglect. Late 2007: Movement begins in suburban communities to establish new regional zoo. Late 2008: Regional tax proposal to fund new zoo passes. Spring 2009: Ground broken on new zoo facility on vast acreage in Groveland Township, Oakland County. Spring 2013: New state-of-the-art Southeast Michigan Zoological Gardens opens in Groveland Township. Attendance is record-breaking. Early 2014: The old zoo grounds at 10 Mile and Woodward are sold to a private developer after legal challenges to the sale are resolved. The revenue gained from the sale helps Detroit recover from receivership, which the city entered in 2008. Fall 2017: The popular, upscale Huntington Oaks Mall opens on the site of the old zoo. |

The CC needs to realize they are never going to be taken seriously after all this. All they are doing is hurting the future. Do they think they are making a statement? That statement is, we don't care about anything that would help, or make sense for that matter. |

I don't recall reading where the CC themselves endorsed any of the activities or comments that were happening. Having said that it is the job of the Seargent at Arms (which ever member is appointed to that role) to take control of the meeting through procedural processes or through physically removing people. While I don't see the CC neccessarily endorsing the actions of those at the meeting, they should have got things under control so that the residents of this city (myself being one of those people) don't look like fools. |

Good points, bvos. This incident was not the fault of the council. If residents are yelling out of turn at the meeting they need to be removed. It's actually probably for the best if the vote is postponed a bit longer, to let this stuff settle down first. |

You never want to be caught on camera having disorderly citizens removed, especially if you want to run for mayor. |

Actually, a huge segement of the American population needs "civility education." BTW, they've removed citizens from Lansing City Council, here, more than once. They usually come back the next week and get the point. It's just that simple, election pending or not. |

I'd probably vote for a council member who removed a gadfly from the chambers. Say what you have to say in a polite and respectful manner. This ain't Mack Ave. This is the chambers of the government. |

Can anybody confirm that the state has still extended it's offer of funding? I am under the impression that this motion is just the first step towards regonalizing the zoo. Considering the current state of the area and it's likely future, this makes all the sense in the world. |

I was the one who stated that the zoo property cannot be re-developed. A few years back there was an article in the major papers about Rackham Golf Course. The reporter asked the course manager if anyone had ever approached them about selling the land for redevelopment, since it is in such a valuable area. The manager stated that deed restrictions prevent anything except a golf course and zoo for that area, because of the Rackham family land donation loopholes. |
