From the wxyz website. Coleman A. Young, Jr. Announces Candidacy By Kimberly Craig,br>Web produced by Christine Lasek March 2, 2006 Coleman A. Young is one of the most recognizable names in Detroit politics, and soon that name will be back on the ballot. Coleman A. Young, Jr. was originally names Joel Loving, but later changed his name. He is the 23-year-old son of a Detroit political legend, and he’s running for office. "I’m seeking election for the 4th District Michigan House of Representatives. The reason why I am seeing election is because I want to help people," Young, Jr. explained. "You know, I looked at my legacy. I looked at who I am and who my father is, I think I have an obligation, I think I have a duty to Detroiters, to help them. And I know they are looking for somebody who loves them, and I love them and I want to help them." Coleman A. Young, Jr. also spoke with 7 Action News about the ups and downs in his relationship with his father. He explained, "There was some turmoil in the beginning, but really, in the end, he was really a great man. He was a great father." 7 Action News also asked Coleman A. Young, Jr., if he sees himself running for mayor of Detroit one day, and he said to ask the question again in 14 years. |

Not sure how I feel about this. Is this just a case of someone trying to use name recognition, or is he really a good guy? |

HOw long has he been living in Detroit? Didn't he just recently re-locate. Sadly, he will probably win based upon name recognition. I am going to run for office but first I will be changing my name to jt1 Cockrel-KilPatrick-Collins-Wat son-McPhail-Young. |

Sounds like a shallow candidacy. His whole platform is "I want to serve my city. ... I love my city." Does this young man have any ideas to bring to the table? |

Lame. The kid hardly new his dad, and he changed his name in his teens (like 17 or 18) to Coleman A. Young Jr from Joel Loving. I can see changing your last name, but changing your first name and middle name to become a junior. Sounds like a total ploy concieved most likely by his mother. Joel Loving from Fontana California, the next Mayor of Detroit! Week and lame. This whole region is pathetic. I have no doubts, that this dude from Cali, will have absolutely no problems getting elected for any post here in Detroit. Sad. |

I saw his "press conference " on Channel 4 at 6 PM. I like the guy. He seems up beat and articulate. I guess he has only been a "resident" for about 3 months. Now if Hillary can wander into the State of New York ( she had to look it up on the map) and run and win a senatorial election, I'd say Jr. has every right to toss his hat in the ring. |

Mcp001, you make a great point about the old gang wanting back in. Coleman A. Young was a Detroit Mayor for 20 years and does have a legacy amongst the voters. No Jjaba, I didn't like him. Granted he was a historical figure in Detroit's history, there's no denying that. But he was a shady (to put it mildly), and controversial "leader" who preferred causing problem within the area instead of fixing them. People have been bitching enough for the past two weeks about lbp. If this kid is anything like his father, I will not be surprised to see much of the work that has/is beeing done to revitalize the city ultimately being for naught. |

It appears that he will have a tough time in the primary. I have heard that later today Lamar Lemmons XVI and Lonnie Bates VII are holding press conferences to announce their candidacies for this seat. Seriously though, does anybody have any information about other potential candidates for this seat? Any names? As for Mr. Young, I know a student who has met him and found him to be very likeable and smart. Yet with all due respect to younger twentysomethings, I am not convinced that 23 year olds can possibly have enough adult experience and perspective to perform the job very well (especially if he/she hasn't grown up living among his/her prospective constituents). I know that there are no formal experience requirements for the legislature and that the body benefits from having members from all walks of life. Yet, I believe that the kind of insight and knowledge the job requires in order to do it well only comes after a few years of shouldering adult responsibilities. It's just my view, I'm sure others disagree. |

Remember, Daddy Coleman Young also cut his political teeth in Lansing. Doing legislation is much less stressful than being an administrator. The onliest problem with Junior is that he didn't get banged up as a radical union organizer in his formative years. Coleman Young was from the streets of Detroit, Hoffaesque in my mind. jjaba. |

Every time I venture into a political discussion on this forum, I end up shaking my head in disbelief. Suspend your cynicism for one freaking second. Is it possible, just maybe, that this young man wants to go into public service because he wants to do well in life? You have to start somewhere, would this "hilarity" occur if it was Joe Blow? The name Joel Loving has resonance to long time Detroiters, maybe he took the CAYJr to face his history instead of end play it. Honestly. Go back to making fun of people who were shot in church. |

Coleman Young was born May 24, 1918 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The oldest of five children of William Coleman and Ida Reese Young, he was named in honor of both his father and grandfather, Alex Young. The post that stated "that this young man wants to go into public service because he wants to do well in life? You have to start somewhere" soundz like part of the mentality that doing "public" service is merely a method of acquiring "private" gain. |

I'm not sure exactly what to make of Rasputin's rather schizoid comments (maybe he'd better lay of the hootch), but Detroiters do have a history of doing exactly what he accuses other "parrots" of doing.... repeating themselves. Detroit voters voted for Sheila Cockerel, and later voted for Kenneth Cockerel Jr. (they ain't Kenneth Cockerel Sr. that's for sure!!!!). However, it turns out they are virtually the only members of City Council who are not only smart, but actually are pretty good at what they do and seem to be the only voices of reason on the council. Joel Loving or CAY Jr., or whatever, may actually be a decent person to run for a city position. He can't be any worse than some of the Bozo's in there right now!! |

Yeah yeah yeah, I know he want to run for the state legislature, but he's following KK's route to city government. Or is it difficult for you to comprehend about the future. Hey Ras, sorry but I have a masters degree, and one of my favorite subjects was Logic 101, which by seeing all your Ad Hominem posts shows the rest of the Forumers that you never took a logic class. If you had been better educated then you wouldn't keep posting logic fallacies all the time. It just makes it difficult fo those of us who are well educated, to not stoop to your level. |
