I am new to this board, but you people are full of it. Complaining about a new Staples? Are you so interwoven in the IDEA of Detroit that you have lost the main reason why you bitch in the first place. We need every corporate entity to embrace our neighborhoods, be it a Staples or (heaven forbid you shop at a) Meijers.
The audacity(sp?) of someone trying to threaten a major corp. for taking a chance in setting up shop in one of our neighborhoods is so counterproductive to the good things that make a site like this active.
WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!
We all need this type of activity regardless if it looks like a car wash or a chuck e' cheese. you want progress, here it is.
you still want to live in a Mad Max society.....move to Gary, IN.
This is not a threat, just a wake up call. And for those who bitch about new jobs and developments, check with your realator, they will have a smile on their face.
In the end, we all want to live comfortable and safe, so why fight against what we all want?

Yes, because we don't have enough car washes around this city as it is. Please, I need another "Hand Car Wash" in my neighborhood... the current 25 of them can't keep up with the demand.

And thank god you're not threatening us... just waking us up. I think i'll stick with my current alarm clock, thanks...

Doobie,

Not only are they not joking, neither lives within miles (or states) of the development. It's crazy, and criticism never ever happens on here.

Welcome to the Thunderdome!

Appriciate the slap on the back island...
I am ready for the onslaught. I'm not scared. I live in rivertown.
As far as this Mcshitty comment dude, are you really pissed about carwashes? Nothing like a job to make someone uncomfortable around here. The whole point was a jab at the idea that the
building will not fit into the scheme of the area. Grow up buddy. As far as your alarm clock...bought it in Royal Oak dindn't ya? Got ya!!

The whole intent of me wasting my Sunday posting on this crazy board was to tell people like you to fight a bigger battle. Stop worrying about shite and make your community better.
Stop your enema treatments for 20 and take a deep breath. It'll be OK.......as long as a-holes like you stay out of the way of progress. The small buisnessman is the lifeblood of progress.

btw..your welcome, ring, mutherfukerring.

LOL, dude... i shop in Detroit, live in Detroit, and live for Detroit. And next time you want to encourage people to "fight a bigger battle", you might want to do it in a slightly less inflammatory and vulgar manner. It might be a bit more well received.

Super_d,

Doobie is not William_x. Although William_x oftentimes bungled his thoughts and his words, he had a very sensitive and caring side that came out in his posts. I do miss him and really wish for him to come back to the forum and express himself as best he knows. He is missed a great deal...at least on this end.

You know who else must be joking? Lowell, for letting Rasputin come up in here for YEARS and spout off racist bullshit at everybody with next to no censorship.

This guy doesn't appreciate being referred to as a "sand nigger."

I often wonder what Ras did to get such preferential treatment.

What is funny is that while I am accused of being several people I am not, my girl is yelling at me for even bothering with this.

If I were in high school I would do this for fun. However, I am well past this. I was simply looking for a website ( not SITE.....which is spelled cite) to talk amoung adults. So.....unless anyone wants to talk productively and not make a loogie length contest. I'm out. For all of those who wanna bite off on an intelligent thought for your little click, have fun.
Mcyousuck....if you can't understand the fact that you are actually dissing your own economy, sorry. By crappping on your local buisinesses you are showing the world that you are too good to deal with people who have to struggle to make a living. Please dont pass judgement on us.
Not trying to create drama, but if you wanna bring it, post your resume and I will give you mine. Then we can compare who is the civic visionary. dude.

Doobie225, you are very right in asserting that we need any and all business activity IN the city, and that we should be very welcoming to any potential businesses, big and especially small.

I don't think the implication of the 'letter to Staples re: the building' was that they should build an urban style big box "or else." Or that they shouldn't come here if they aren't gonna build the sort of building we want. We aren't Boston or New York...we have plenty of empty space and demand for it remains low...but I still believe that it is worth a try (to ask them for a building that is complementary to our previous built environment.) This IS a city, with a history and heritage, and we should at least discuss matters like this, no matter how nit-picky they sound. If the goal was just to attract businesses so that they can be as profitable as possible and not put any emphasis on what they actually build, then that is a good recipe for having Detroit turned into something that resembles Gratiot at 14 mile. Cities have ordinances and codes. They can control what type of building goes where. They have trememdous control over what our built environment will look like. We don't want to be so overbearing that Staples or any other potential tenant just says, 'forget it,' but we do want some modest standards. Perhaps that letter should have been directed to the city and not to Staples, but we'll see what Staples gives us.

Doobie, you haven't had the most auspicious start here, but as long as you don't fall into the habit of stereotyping people, name-calling, or being a wacky communist (I can tell by your first post that you're probably not), then you'll always have that desired productive roundtable with me. You could even be a communist...I'd still have that roundtable, i just wouldn't like you that much.

Doobie, The futility of your post is that you somehow believe this group has the power to stop the wheels which have been set into motion for building a Staples. We argue as an exercise in creativity so that it may be applied to debate over how we plan to create/improve our built environment. Comfort and safety are important givens but many of us demand more in the way of walkability, aesthetic value, sustainability, historical context, etc. There is absolutely no harm in this at all.

Mbr,
true enough.( im gonna stop with the correct punctuation from now on) there is no futility in my postings. the point is exactly what you said yourself. an exercise is just that. preparing to do something and getting in the right frame of mind or shape, for that matter, does nothing. it is like what i said up there, bitch about the important things. When you need a xerox machine then bitch about the service at said staples.
do yourselves a favor and come to the river and talk to me in person. alot cooler than trying to infer meaning from a text post.

Welcome to the board Doobie. I appreciate your strong first post and understand where you coming from.

ILD...always wonderful to see you posting!!!

To the forum...Doobie has made a strong point. Its so wrong to complain and bitch about not having business look upon Detroit to locate and then get all upset about how the building will look. Like so many threads that are on the forum, the Staples thread has morphed into yet another Detroityes! bitch and moan session.

Sometimes I feel that WE tend to be the problem when it comes to the growth of our city.

Dude, you keep screamin' for an "adult roundtable" but you're alienating a lot of people on this page. Pardon my spelling errors, I don't claim to be the grammar police, but I haven't made any personal attacks on you, so I would appreciate you doing the same. We're all on this forum to share our views and concerns about the City of Detroit, a city that we all love. I would also like to echo Mackinaw's post above... the spirit of the thread ref: Staples wasn't to complain about them building here, but simply to ask them what sort of plans they had for the exterior of the building. I have to respectfully disagree in regards to that we can't complain about what a building looks like just because we need businesses. Too many businesses take advantage of the lax attitude in regards to building aesthetics. We all welcome new businesses here in Detroit and support our current ones. I do business with a NUMBER of local small business owners. For example, the local small grocery store across the street from me (Motown Market). But I also support other companies that are "big box" outlets that SUPPORT the City of Detroit (i.e. Home Depot). But I also don't ONLY shop Detroit. Due to the lack of commercial outlets in Detroit that offer reasonably and competitively priced items, I am, unfortunately, forced to shop outside the city.

The reason I sound a little irky about the "car wash" statement is because a good number of those car washes are actually front's for drug dealers and prostitution. I know this from my previous law enforcement training and experience. I've worked hard in this city on a number of different platforms. Besides working on a few political campaigns (Hendrix and also Gov. Granholm), I also volunteer for a number of non-profits in Detroit and surrounding areas.

I would never say that business isn't needed in Detroit. However, my comments at the beginning of this thread were in response to your ridiculously hostile and inflammatory post. Stop looking for ways to attack me and understand that I'm not attacking YOU, i'm expressing my concern in your completely hostile approach to the forum members of this website. We are all in this together and we're all here for a reason.

If we didn't care about this city, we wouldn't be forum members.

I have no idea why i'm still up at this hour, let alone with the energy to type something on a board i have never been to before. but here goes.
I never intended to alienate anyone( other than you, not sure who you are talking about) but the holier than thou attitude is what is holding you back. real proud for you that you volunteer and that you are politically active. just so you know, working for the dems is working for the devil in a prettier dress. good job. and thanks for the heads up about drugs at a car wash, ever bought pot from the dishwasher at a bennigans in birmingham...its there also. there are more hookers on 8 mile and woodward in ferndale then there are down here.nothing personal, but drop the cross.
and no, the thread about the staples is not about making the city a better world with a pretty design on the front. it is about superficiality, this inane idealist attitude that the city will be a better place if we can make it just like the utopian world we've always envisioned it could be.

sounds stupid, huh.
anyone hear an echo?

the reality is that we live in a place full of crack dens, gambling rings, dog fighting arenas and i hear some canadiens chase around a little black disk at the joe. you want change? induce it on a daily basis by mingling with the masses, not condeming them from a secure platform.

oh and when you are at the market, can you get me some tomatoes? my arm is a itchin'

im done for tonite. peace, horse hair weaves and biscut grease.

Mingling with the masses? Buddy, I can tell you're the one guy people run from at a party... You can't even stay on topic here... you're CLEARLY not interested in any sort of discussion... you're simply waiting for others to stop talking so you can spew your small, narrow views of city life. You want to further our reality, instead of improving upon it. Yeah, Detroit has it's problems, but "the reality that we live in a place full of crack dens, gambling rings..." isn't a reality we SHOULD live in... it's a reality that we can change and improve.

Doobie, I thought my post was fairly respectful. Sorry you felt the need to suggest I suck and rant about how I'm crapping on local business and such. Find me a single post where I've done that and I'll remove my membership from this board. Also, Also, the word is "clique." Not "click." Regardless, I'm not part of it. Check my post count. I made a rare post here in hopes that maybe you could bring out some of those constructive ideas you talked about, and folks here could see substance behind the prickly language. I'm sad to find it seems any good ideas you have have long ago been swallowed by spiteful message that carries them. I hope you find what you're seeking. I'll go back to lurking now.
