"Area's Irish roots give a reason to celebrate

Thousands to pack Michigan Avenue near downtown for the 48th annual Detroit St. Patrick's Day parade"

I'm 1/2 Scots, but this is a must-do event for me each year.

The parade is one of the best events in Detroit that comes every year. A lot of people do not know about it. Which might be a good thing because there is already a butt load of people down there. Especially when it was 70 degrees that year. That kind of weather also makes it nice for the race before the parade.
Drink up!!!!

I often find myself bringing a friend to Detroit for the first time for this event. They are continously amazed at the spectacle of the parade, the party at the gaelic league, music at corktown tavern and the understated beauty of corktown itself. I'll be there this weekend, look for the guy drinking in the green shirt. lol.
P.S. Weatherbug says 6o degrees this St. Patty's

Those Corktowners get outta hand during this event. I'm staying as far away as possible. :-)

I too always bring what I call "A Parade Virgin" every year. Sometimes two, three, etc.. and everyone of them is also in total shock of the fun and amount of people that attend.

Yes guy in green shirt drinking, but my shirt will say kiss me I'm Irish. lol

Any suggestions in terms of where to park, etc.? I plan on attending and joining the festivities at Nemo's - however I historically took a shuttle or party bus - but this year I'm riding in solo. Anyone?

Paulc

Park right behind Tiger Stadium for $10 or you can park in some of the neighborhoods near by for free. Even at the MGM casino, not a far walk.

Nemos is a blast, but check our lager house, and some others too. Lager house always has a good mix of it's regular trendy customers along with some middle aged drunk people good time. Also can't beat the galeic league

Thanks Jqls. I hadn't even thought of MGM - that's not a bad idea. Yeah, Lager and the Gaelic League were on my radar too... you can't go wrong bar-hoppin' down Michigan Ave. - it's going to be a blast! Thanks again - cheers.

Another note Paulc if you are going to hang on the street and watch the parade for the few hours it goes by. Bring your own beer and save yourself a few bucks. You can bring a red cup to pour it in if you would like to be totally safe, but the police are cool about drinking down there.
Have fun and Cheers you too.

Parade was as usual a lot of fun, couldn't walk a block without running into an old friend. I have to admit I wasn't thrilled about all the cover charges this year at the various bars. I understand they have an opportunity to make a bunch of money from the suburbanites that come down, but can't they just raise the prices without the cover?

36:30, why pay covers at the bar. Hang out in the street after the race, during the parade, and after. Then go in the bars and pay no cover. Why sit in a bar during the parade, that's stupid.

Jqls,
I've been doing this parade for over 10 years. Believe me we don't sit in the bar. Our usual MO is to slip into the bars along the route grab a quick shot and a beer and head back out to the parade with beer in hand or stop into several of the lofts my friends live in along the parade route on Michigan, grab a beer and watch the parade from the windows. Just was a bit of a shock for covers this year aside from the Gaelic League, which I've always happily paid.

Jams,
Sorry only 7 years here...., run the race every year and bring a group of about 25 suburbanites down there. Hung out all day and night did not pay one cover.

By the way so your whole ten year comment was an assumption that you are better than me?????? Are you better than me????

Hunchentoot - while I'd like to be able to say I ran the Corktown Marathon yesterday, sadly it was only 4 miles.

Machoken -

Maybe I should go change that. On the other hand, it sounds more impressive the way I have it and I don't claim to be some sort of journalist. I'm a reckless hipster internet blogger spreading rumors!

P.S. I hear they're gonna tear down the RenCen this summer!
