I had to drive out the Jeffries this morning, and had (for me) the unusual experience of looking at the GATEWAY INDUSTRIAL CENTER sign in the daylight instead of night-time.

This is a great sign: simple sans-serif letters, perfect composition, red neon, and (now that it's fixed) glowing above the industrial palaver north of the Jeffries and west of the Southfield. This may be my favorite sign in the Detroit area, but then I remember the BRONX's neon sign....

What are the Detroit area's best signs?

I'll nominate the Ypsi-Arbor bowling alley sign at Washtenaw/Golfside in Ypsi Township.

The giant General Tire "G" along the Chrysler near Hamtramck was one of my favorites.

The car production sign at the Ford and Chrysler.

The piece d'resistance, though, was the dairy sign at the Jefferies and the Ford.

What other intersection in America had its own animal sound?

I really like the "Yellow pages" sign still on the Oakman exchange bldg. (very visible on the north Lodge), and wish the yellow pages folks would restore it.

The Russel Industral Complex sign S. bound I-75.

Love the simple red/orange block lettering lit correctly.

Agreed about the Russell.

I like all the signage on Ford Field.

On a smaller scale, I've always thought the signage on the Chene-Trombley mart near the I-94 east exit was cool.

I was in Brighton a few weeks ago for work, and I found a few old great ones out there:

Smith's Motel out on beautiful Briggs Lake. Is there a realation to the Briggs of Car Body/Detroit Tigers fame?

2

A florists shop. The building didn't match the sign :-)

3

A hardware store downtown.

And my personal favorite?

4

This old Deco neon sign in Downtown Windsor.

However the best sign ever is this one.

1

Located in Ottawa (Canada's National Capital - Sorry for straying from the area).

So which is it? No Tresspassing or enter at your own risk? You've gotta love the Government. :-)

From WSU/VMC, the old Belle Isle sign.

Michigan Ave at night.

Michigan Ave at night
WSU/VMC

Don't know where or when, so don't ask me. I'm guessing the "Peoples" sign is People's Outfitting on NE corner of Michigan and Shelby.

In Briggs Stadium,
"VISITOR'S CLUBHOUSE, no visitors."

Anybody got a pic. of that one? A classic and very famous sign which everybody could see exiting on the Michigan Avenue side of the stadium.

March 13, 1956, jjaba delivered that Detroit Times paper to 60 customers on his Westside route.

The pic. of the Belle Isle sign with U.S. Rubber adjacent, was taken in 1953.

jjaba, Proudly Westside.

Good gawd, how long have you had that National Lampoon cover?

One of my favorites used to be the 7 Crown sign that faced north on Woodward in Highland Park. On the Medical Arts Building, I think (it's been a long time...)

How about the soon to be gone MEDUSA CEMENT along the river? It would be cool to save those, as they have been a riverfront icon for decades and could someday adorn some other building along the river.

jjaba, Jonesing for a Vernor's right now.
Many thanks for the great pics.

jjaba had a keg of Vernor's for his reception for Bar Mitzvah, 1954. We had the party in our two-flat home, the keg was in jjaba's bedroom.
