I've noticed that there always seems to be talk here about the Lions and their woes, kudos to the Pistons and the lamenting of the Tigers but very seldom do we see anyone talking about how the lads sporting the Winged Wheel are doing. As it stands now, the Wings are leading the entire NHL in points and are clawing tooth & nail to wrap up the President's Trophy... and nothing here on DetroitYes?? C'mon...! |

Agreed, I've thought of making a Wings' thread on here for quite some time. Carolina hasn't missed a beat since Cole went down, and Hasek is getting ready to come back for the Sens, so I wouldn't guarantee a President's trophy just yet. Legace hasn't looked too hot in the last few, either, hopefully Osgood and him have a little feud over who's better these next two weeks or so. |

It's just like all the empty seats at "sold-out" Wings and Pistons games. We're treating our teams like Atlanta people treat the Braves--taking them for granted. But Atlanta can't even sell out playoff games! So anyhow, last night was encouraging because we only gave up one goal. I'm still trying to assess if I should be worried about the strength of our goalies or our overall defense. You really need a goalie who can stand on his head to make the difference in the playoffs, and I don't think we have that. |

Been lucky this year in Las Vegas; there's been at least two dozen Wings' games on my TV this season. They've had more than their share on OLN Network, making me a happy camper. This corner of my desk says it all.

It's almost nind numbing knowing that a player of his magnitude has been with one club so many years. Stevie Yzerman is amazing. He and Joe Dumars are probably the epitome of Detroit athlete class in this town. |

Yeah, and the fact that Stevie has said recently that he admires was Joe D's done to the Pistons and may want to do something similar (with the Wings) is quite promising. Two amazing athletes and people that the D is lucky to have for years to come--I hope. |

Okay I'm in agreement with Al Kaline but as far as Gordie goes, he was great because he was one of ours, but if you were to ask anyone else in the league who played against him, they'd hardly say he was classy. I'm sure they'd say the opposite. I guess defining "class" is all relative in the big picture. Right now Stevie's still playing and I can admire him for these moments. |

I went to the sharks-wings game just after the olympic break here in San Jose. Terrible game for the Wings without those swedes. But I did sit there for just a moment, and take in the fact that I was likely seeing Steve Yzerman on the ice for the very last time. It almost brings tears to my eyes to think he will soon be done as a player. He's the only true hockey I've ever known. Others have come and gone. But he's been playing in Detroit since I was 2 years old. To me, the wings ARE Steve Yzerman. Year in and year out I could always count on him always there. But soon he won't be, and its quite sad. With that said, the wings look good, though Legace's been kinda soft lately. Odd, as he was smokinnnnnn back early in the season. Anyway, lets get one more for Stevie, and everyone else, before he's gone. Its the only fitting way to send him off. |

"It's just like all the empty seats at "sold-out" Wings and Pistons games." I have heard numerous times that more often than not, the empty seats in the lower bowl of the JLA are due to the season ticket holders hanging out in the Olympia room. In fact, if you've been to a game in person, just note how the upper bowl (and standing room) is usually completely packed. I will never understand people who can afford lower bowl season tickets to the Wings, and yet choose to hang out in a bar instead of watching the game from their $70 a game seats. As far as the Pistons go, I havent noticed that at the Palace myself, but I'm willing to bet its the same thing over their (with the season-ticket only bar, and the Palace Grill) -Jim |

A great number of the lower bowl seats are in fact corporate-owned, and often given to clients or customers as rewards for business, whether those people are fans or not. I know a number of these owners who give them to people who just don't bother going. Whenever I'm lucky enough to sit down there I ask the people around me where they got theirs, and quite often it's from a business owner who hands them out randomly to indifferent people. |

Not a shabby night beating the Canucks in GM Place. They seem to be pulling it all together now. And I think Ozzie's gonna make a heckuva good run to snag the job in nets from Manny. I think both of those guys know the deal and are okay with it. It's good healthy competition there. |

I've refrained from posting on here for a couple of reasons, 1)haven't had a chance to catch too many Wings games this year (damn ESPN & OLN!), 2) and not being from Detroit or living there now makes me a little reluctant to post my opinion! That being said, being a long-time Wings fan, I can say I think they may go deep in the playoffs, but my realist side says no Cup for Stevie in what is probably his last season. The games I have seen this season, the boys just seem too up & down to go toe-to-toe with younger, &/or faster teams such as Nashville or Carolina. One or two periods of great play may work in the reg. season, but let's face it, playoffs are a whole different story (every hockey fan here should be able to attest to that!). Plus the questions in goal NEEDS to resolved before playoff time. Granted, Ozzie got a Cup in '98, but that was SIX years ago (half a career for most hockey players!). Legace's good, but untested in a LONG playoff run. Here's hoping I'm wrong & no injuries and experience will go a long way! Anyway, looking forward to seeing DET-STL next week in St. Louis (closer to home than Detroit...DAMN!) for what will probably be my last time actually watching Stevie Y play in person. Last time I saw DET-STL, was 2 rows off the ice in the corner for the '01-02 season. Still makes me smile thinking I got to see some of the best talent ever assembled (in my lifetime!) on the ice (Yzerman, Shanahan, Robitaille, Hasek, Chelios, Lidstrom all on the ice at one time in the game!!!) and Hull got a hat trick against his former team!!! I still wish Cujo would've fared better in his Wing period!! Thanks for letting me ramble! |

How can Nick not wear the C after Stevie retires? The only other choices I can see are Shanahan and maybe Chelios if he's still around. Maybe Draper, Zetterberg or Williams eventually but not for awhile. In the meantime I'm gonna savor The Captain still being around. |

Unofficially I think he is already, just based upon how much Nick's on the ice. The guy's on there for penalty kills, power plays and his regular shifts. And his avoidance of the penalty box makes him an amazingly valuable asset. |

Like what Mickey Redmond said during the broadcast, I don't think Ozzie was to blame for the loss tonight vs. the Blue Jackets. You get a 3-0 lead and can't hold it?? Considering the last game they held guys like Thornton & Cheechoo to 3 shots, I'd say there was a serious lack of concentration here. |

The Hockey Hall of Fame is always amazing. I love the fact that they've converted a bank vault to be a repository for a lot of the Stanley Cup memorabilia and seeing the evolution of the equipment is mighty cool. Usually they have a huge picture of the team that won the Cup on the walkway into the vault area. I wonder what they'll have now that the Cup wasn't won by anyone last year. |

"An Ottawa/ Detroit final would be killer!!!" I would absolutely hate that. The Wings are my favorite team, always have been and always will be. But Ottawa is also my second favorite team...kind of favorite #1, and favorite #1A. If they meet up in the playoffs, I would root for the Wings, but also feel bad rooting against Ottawa. I'm also not sure that the Wings would come out on top in a 7 game series....that Heatley/Spezza/Alfredsson line can be unstopable. |

Smog, Knock off the Haterade on Manny, Wasgood had his time. Legace was already announced as the Playoff starter and Babcock has never come off that. I agree 100% that Nick will get the "C" and Drapes the "A". Kaline is a crumudgeon and everytime I see Ted Linsey, I am reminded of what an ass Gordie can be. Red Winged Wheel-atcha! |

Agreed - Osgood is past his short-lived prime. Somehow Legace manages to win with the exact same defense in front of him that Osgood has when he loses. And Ozzie has a habit of blowings sure-win games, like the loss to Dallas earlier this year. Up 3-0 and he lets in 6 goals in a row. This time up 3-0 vs. Chicago and lets in 4 goals. Totally unacceptable. Similar to when he was with St. Louis, up 3-1 in the first-round playoff series vs. Vancouver and they lose three games in a row with him in net and the playoffs are over for them. His career is defined by letting in goals that should never have gone in, and losing games that should never have been lost. We got rid of him the first time for a reason. Osgood: 2.77 GAA, .895 Save percentage Legace: 2.17 GAA, .916 Save percentage |

Newman- Haterade on Manny? Who said anything about bagging on him. He even admitted he was struggling right after the Olympic break. Can't we state the obvious facts (and by a player's own admission) that a player is playing below their own standards and not be ragging on them?? So if I'm playing the Haterade card, you'd best check it with Manny himself. How else can we discuss things like this??? I don't have a problem with either goalie starting in net actually. Defensively the team has to play better in front of both of them in order for the team to succeed deep into the playoffs. They need to have games like they recently had against the Sharks every night where they're limiting the other team's premiere players' scoring opportunities. Even getting into a run & gun with lowly teams like Chicago can get you into trouble. |

Al Kaline won a world series, but he wont be starting in right field for the tigers this monday... Osgood is past his prime, and its time to move forward. Legace has proven to be a very solid goaltender, and his stats this season back that up. Osgood can be and still is a very solid backup, and he is a key piece to this team, so long as he knows his position...thus far, legace and osgood have only had the 'friendly' competition...if it escalated into anything more than that, then the Wings are in trouble |

How is he past his prime? He's about 3 months older than Legace. Legace is a 33 year old career back up for a good reason. Osgood is in the top 20 in wins all time. Sure Osgood lets in the soft goal once and a while, but the defense won't even let players take soft shots in the playoffs. Al Kaline is like 80 years old. W.T.F.? |

Yeah, Calgary is gonna be a grind to get through. I can almost see them as being Detroit's biggest obstacle to the Finals. But then depending how the referees call the playoffs in this new era NHL could also be a huge determiner as to how well the Wings do as well. It should be interesting. |

They're President's Trophy winners, baby! The Wings have the best record in the NHL. Of course this means nothing in the playoffs, but at least they'll be able to rest some players through the end of the season. |

President's Trophy hooray. But what's next? Without trying to be a total Red Wings homer- how far do you think we can go? And if we do make it to the Finals- against whom? Biggest obstacles beyond injuries?? |

Admittedly a Detroit vs.Ottawa final would still be amazing to watch just on the sheer fact that both teams are powerhouses. A Detroit vs. Carolina match-up could be fun in the sense it'd be another Ilitch vs. Karmanos battle. Otr does your crystal ball foretell of another scenario? Your thoughts & predictions??? |

Nice to read this at the bottom of the game recap from last night: Notes:@ Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk (lower body) missed his third straight game and Mathieu Schneider (groin) was out for a sixth game in a row. ... In a Motor City moment, a Toyota SUV was booed as it made a lap on the ice during a promotion. ... Roger Crozier is the last Detroit goalie to have seven shutouts in a season. ... Legace has 13 career shutouts. ... |

"I thought the Leafs were going all the way this year...." Metoo, however sadly they wont even make the playoffs. I still have Ottawa to cheer for tho. Has Detroit ever won the President's Trophy and the Cup in the same year (with in the last decade)? It seems like when ever the win the President's Trophy they are out pretty early.. |

Predictions for the first round playoffs?? The Oilers gonna take one or a few from us? Admittedly I was hoping to draw Colorado for the first round just for old times sake but the Avalanche has been looking pretty feeble as of late (still have no idea why LaCroix traded for Jose Theodore). |

It's eerie isn't it? New coach, retooled roster, one season off and it was deja vu all over again. A middling goalie stops 50+ shots and the Wings have to go into OT to beat an 8th seed at home. |

Edmonton was playing ultra-defensive hockey. It seemed like any time a Red Wing was skating past the blue line w/ the puck 4 Oilers were already in the zone. Plus the Wings shoot at the net constantly, even if it isn't the best shot to take. That'll drive up the save % for the opposing goalie. Hope they all aren't this hard |

2-1 after one period. Other playoff thoughts: - how about those Montreal Canadiens! Gerber has been horrible. - are the Flyers packing it in? - what about the Rangers, they have been just horrible. Of course, the Devils could be cup favourites at this point. - the Senators win big and ugly tonight. The Lightning need a goalie badly. |

I like what Ken Daniels said after the game... "You win one game, you think you'll win it all... you lose one game and you think you'll lose them all" Okay, so the Wings came up on the short end of the ledger tonight. A few good things did come out of it- they did appear to re-focus and get better in the third and in OT. The opportunities were there. All it took was one bad bounce, mental breakdown, or something quirky like that one play and we're down 1-2. |

The Wings shouldn't need a superstar goalie to win. The Wings have scored 8 goals in almost 12 periods of hockey. That's not going to cut it. The superstars on the roster are vanishing again. Lidstrom's a -4. Shanahan hasn't scored. Wings are making another journeyman goalie look like Ken Dryden. Another coach who can't figure out how to beat the trap. |

The wings are finished. The Illitches are paying for their greed in playoff losses. Old time hockey is dead in Detroit. We must let it go, and allow them to become the Dead Things again, so that in 20 years, old time hockey can return, and rabid, hungry, fans can once again enjoy the rebirth. That brand of hockey that I'm watching, just isn't the same as the good ole days of the late 80's and 90's. We must move on to baseball and football and allow hockeytown to fade into oblivion. Poor Yzerman - he's gonna end his career with injury in the next week. |

The article makes a good point. I coughed up $160 for the NHL Center Ice package so I could watch the Red Wings down here in the deep south. Then it dawns on you as the season unfolds that the Wings play all these shitty teams and only play old rivals like the Maple Leafs, Rangers and Canadiens once a year. Gary Bettman can go to hell. |

Well, the Wings' offense finally kicked in and we got the game 4-2. It was amazing how upset the Edmonton fans were at that supposed pick that Lidstrom had set on the game winner. he hardly touched him! It was more of a dive than anything else! Regardless, it's just one game. We need two more to move on to the next round. |

I keep trying to refuse it as well. I'm hoping he'll come back forever. But in all honesty, I could see it going either way. All season it seems to have pointed towards it being his last. On the other hand, he has been playing so well as of late. He certainly isn't too old or too slow as we've seen over this past month. My world (at 25) has known nearly nothing but Stevie Y as the face of the Wings. I don't know how life, hockey, and the Wings will feel without him. |

Reflecting on the Wings' early-round exits and I can't decide which was worse, this game or the 2001 disaster at LA, where Lapointe took two penalties in the final five minutes of the 3rd and lost us the game (http://www.usatoday.com/sports /hockey/cup01/games/2001-04-18 -detla.htm). Here's hoping we'll see #19 back on the ice in October. |

Edmonton was a pain in the butt all season, Nashville was another team that had the Wings number. This wasn't a collapse or a surprise. I agree with Babcock - Edmonton's better than a #8 seed. |

Penalties at crucial times leading to power-play goals is what killed the Red Wings in this series(leading by one with four minutes to go and a dumb penalty in this game). Don't put all of the blame on Legacy. Also, the wings need to let some of these 40 year olds go. The youth of Edmonton's team also killed the Red Wings. |

I recall seeing somewhere else in this thread someone calling Manny a "career" back-up...where in the hell do you think Rolosson came from?!?!? Osgood?!?!? It wasn't all Manny's fault...just like one player can't win the game for the team, either. I am rather upset at the officiating in the last game, though. I will defend to my DEATH that the tying goal was kicked in, no matter how Edmonton-biased the ass-face CBC commentators were! They said he wasn't looking down at the puck at all....yeah, right....he was looking down as much as Tommy Lee looks for lesions on his member.....whatever........... and also, if Stevie wants to retire, let him! He's accomplished a hell of a lot in the NHL, what with playing in Wayne and Mario's shadows his whole career....next stop, Hall of Fame (they should waive the wait for him, even though they said they would not do that anymore...they did it for far less players, I think!) |

It's asinine to blame just Legace. The Wings were outplayed in every facet of the game, and they were outcoached as well. There are a lot of veterans on this team who need to go. |

Hemsky was left all alone in front of the net. I would blame the defense for watching the puck rather than covering their checks.... |

Of course Legace wasn't the only one outplayed. But a few of those goals where they were shoved in between his leggs, come on that was horrendous. He looked shaky the whole series. Schneider kept on screwing up. But the bottom line is we had no rhythm. The only time I say that typical Red Wing puck control was this past Game 6, after our first goal and certainly in the second period. |

Everyone knew Legace couldn't carry the team. The whole idea behind this Wings team was that the talent in front of him was good enough that he wouldn't have to stand on his head. That said, he's not the answer in goal. I don't think Osgood would have fared much better. This team needs some hard-hitting Canadian players to complement players like Zetterberg. Chelios needs to retire, so does Yzerman. Give 'em front office jobs. Fire Babcock. They hired him to get past the first round of the playoffs and he failed miserably. Shanahan played well on defense but couldn't score. Lang needs to go too. |

Williams and Jilia failed to pick up Hemsky on the last goal - not Legace's fault. Willaims also took a very bad penalty to start the 3rd period. I have no clue why Williams gets the ice time he does. And Jilia played terrible all series - how many guys did he fail to clear or even pick up in the slot? |

Quite depressing-almost as bad as a loss to Ohio State since Tressel took over. |
