March 23, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Shannon McCarthy 313-701-9139 CITY OF DETROIT AND PAXAHAU SHAKE HANDS, ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL WILL GO ON. DETROIT- Paxahau Promotions Group today announced they have been chosen by the City of Detroit to be the producers of this year’s Electronic Music Festival on Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-29. “We are sincerely honored that the City has selected someone within the electronic community to produce this event - we have worked extremely hard to establish ourselves as a globally respected organization, specifically to bring this event the cultural attention it deserves”, said Jason Huvaere, owner of Paxahau. “Paxahau presented a sound plan to stabilize and grow the event,” said Lucius A. Vassar, the City of Detroit’s Chief Administrative Officer. “We want to see this event flourish and continue to draw people from all over the world to Detroit.” Since 1998 Paxahau has produced Electronic events in Detroit. In that time they have grown to include a record label, booking agency, web-archive and event production company which hosts an average of 20 events a year in the city. The festival producers have also been endorsed by previous festival directors, Carl Craig, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. “As the festival’s 2003 and 2004 producers, we are pleased to see that Paxahau will be taking on the event,” said electronic music pioneer Derrick May. “Jason Huvaere and his group are not only competent event managers, but they are of the electronic music industry. I am confident that in their hands, the event’s integrity as the world’s signature electronic music festival will be preserved, and its operations and management strengthened. “ In an effort to maintain a globally recognized, positive brand image for Detroit, Paxahau will retain the name “Movement, Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival.” With a network of alliances and resources that span the globe, the Paxahau team has emerged as a premier promotions group within the electronic music industry. They plan on growing the festival into a cultural attraction that celebrates not only to sonic art forms associated with Electronic Music, but also the visual arts culture that has evolved from its influences as well. “We see the festival as an opportunity to bring Detroit’s influence all over the world home and nourish one of Detroit’s primary opportunities for tourism and development,” said Huvaere. Specific details regarding the festival will be released at a later date. Please visit www.demf.com to find the latest news as it develops. For now Detroit and the world needs to start getting ready for a 3-day party at the end of May. Detroit’s electronic music festival will go on. |

And in time for the WMC in Miami. Hopefully they get a bump there. I always love hearing what comes out of that week in Miami. Last year there weren't that many hot ones. |

funny that you mention them.. motorcitylive. During Superbowl weekend I was out with a few other forumers and we stopped at a temporary club not to far to the west of CM. There was a couple there telling me about their 'great new club' that they owned.. I turned down an offer to buy a 195 dollar ticket to their SB party. The place they were talking about was motorcitylive. I forgot about that until now. |

ya- the premise on their website states that they plan on running a live broadcast from there similar to a TRL, Times Square type setup with a large window backdrop. Could be interesting if it has legs. |

I'm extremely excited about this for a couple reasons. First, Paxahau has really stepped up the number and quality of acts they have brought into Detroit the past year or two. They have always thrown enjoyable, safe, professional, (and hopefully profitable) events, in my experience. Second, the city has awarded the contract for this years festival with over two months notice, way better than a few weeks. I always thought that annual festivals should be prepared for starting a week or two after the last act of the prior year, but thats wishful thinking. I don't know too much about the club in the book buildng, I heard that its on the second floor. I'd go on the 1st just to say that I attended an event in that old fella. -Spiff |

Yes, the festival is in good hands. I've known Jason for years and he is a professional in every sense of the word. paxahau is bringing Steve Bug to headline that party in the Book Building and he is amazing. It goes without saying but everyone who gives a damn about the electronic music scene in Detroit should be in attendance. |

Best news I've heard all day. That and the 33 storey Greektown Casino makes for a pretty good week. Paxahau are basically saints, IMO. They have also been throwing events at various clubs every weekend, of which I haven't supported nearly enough. Hope some of this forum will go to any fund-raising events they throw between now and then. |

From the Freep... Still to be decided is Movement's location. Hart Plaza, home to the six previous fests, is just one of three city-owned properties being considered, according to Huvaere and city officials. They declined to name the others. Several Detroit sites could meet the criteria set by Paxahau and the city -- such as a capacity of at least 40,000. Potential venues might include, for instance, Campus Martius, the grounds of Chene Park, Cobo Exposition Center and Belle Isle. "Hart Plaza is my third choice," Huvaere said. "If I'd wanted to just do it at Hart Plaza, we could have sealed all of this up weeks ago." I wonder what the first and second choice are... |

totally.. Campus Martius. Who would not want to do a signature event there? I agree with abandoning Hart Plaza. Start new somewhere else and make it their own event. Good News. |

Wow...belle isle sounds cool, but theres only the bridge for access, 1 lane each way. short of shutting it down and shuttling/foot traffic only on the bridge, I don't see it as a feasible option. I would be all for belle isle if the logistics could work. I love hanging out by the river for lunch durng the festival, or just to lounge around with a few friends. Campus Martius would increase the foot traffic and benefit to downtown (and imagine the possibility for daytime sets at Oslo, Bleu, Volume etc.). I'm not too fond of Cobo, part of the festival's appeal to me is enjoying good music outdoors on memorial day weekend. I think its great that Paxahau is thinking through the location decision, to me it seems like a choice betweeen good and better. -Spiff |

Spaceman_spiff, have you ever been to Belle Isle? The bridge is 5 lanes wide, 2 on 3 off. Plus a bike lane in each direction and two huge sidewalks. If it can handle a ticketed grand prix event and not have to close the rest of the island, I'm sure it can handle a tiny 40,000 people music festival without even trying. |

I really hope these guys can pull it off. It's been a great idea since the very first event. My eyes roll skyward thinking how this event has been mired in so much red-tape, controversy, internal bickering, and debt. I really hope that these guys finally get it right and continue this event. It's a natural for Detroit and a huge draw to people all over the world. |

Ndavies, My mistake. I've been to Belle Isle several times, and I would love to see the festival there. I didn't know that there was a grand prix event held there however, do you know how large it was or how they handled traffic and use of the rest of the island? I wonder if not using all of BI would make its use as a venue easier or more difficult? I'm sure a lot of people spend memorial day on BI, and having a music festival nearby might not be a positive thing for them. Sorry again for the misinformation. -Spiff |

Though music on Belle Isle sounds awesome, I'd prefer it in the CBD. DEMF weekend is about more than the festival itself. It's about the fact that venue with a dancefloor has DJ's spinning. I always liked the fact that at midnight everynight you had so many options within a few blocks of walking. With 8 weeks to go I don't know how many out-of-towners we'll get, but by keeping the festival in the CBD they could spend the whole weekend without a car by walking from their hotel to the festival and then to the clubs. |

The Detroit Grand prix was held on Belle Isle for 9 years. The last race was in 2001. It was held Downtown before that. The track was at the west end of the island, Around the Casino and Scott fountain. Sections of the course lines can still be seen on the island. Buses were used to transport race fans over the bridge from parking lots near the island. The grand prix had 138,000 attendees over three days in 2000 and 107,000 in 2001. These were the two lowest totals the race saw in its run. These low attendance figures for the race led to the cancelation. http://www.na-motorsports.com/ Tracks/MI/Detroit.html (Message edited by ndavies on March 24, 2006) |

Agreed Sharmaal - would much rather see this thing intergrated within the downtown. I think that was part of it's appeal. I'm not complaining though, this is great news that the festival looks to be getting some stable management and a base that it can work off to get some serious promotion going. Tiger Stadium is not a half-bad idea. I agree though that it really belongs in the CBD. Having it in some out-of-the-way area (such as Belle Isle) kind of ruins it. (Although I'm sure Belle Isle could handle the traffic.) Campus Martius would be my first choice, but Hart Plaza is really not bad, and the Cobo Roof might be workable. Can't really think of any other areas in the CBD that would work, though. Comerica Park, maybe. |
