Last night I was having a conversation with a downtown business owner who swears that in the coming weeks a big project will be announced at I-75/Fisher Fwy and Woodward in the place where the Motown Headquarters stood. He didn't name the specific developer but said everything was finalized and the plan is to include an Embassy Suites Hotel and high-end shopping. Has anyone heard anything about this? |

Can't be the Motown site, but could be the site just to the North...I heard from that same business owner about a "somerset" style mall...i don't buy it at all. Let's worry about getting a grocery store, and neighborhood retail before building high end retail like that. |

Well hopefully, it's a lifestyle center combined with residential where the Woodward Village project was going to be, and a full renovation of the Masonic with a hotel, and residential surrounding that. If those two things happen, it will be huge for the area. Plus, these two projects are not unbelievable like the somerset rumor |

On the GR thread there were lots of hints of this being a rennovation to the Masonic Temple. This however doesn't answer what the development is at Fisher and Woodward. |

The "Somerset" style mall was thrown at me too. Supposedly there is already renderings and a virtual tour. IMHO, (which I am sure many of you would agree with)any type of mall or lifestyle center full of shopping is all wrong for downtown when we can't even get decent stores to fill our street level spaces! I guess there is always the chance that this could spur more retail to the area but I think that time and time again it has been proven that malls in downtown Detroit don't work (Trapper's Ally, all the shops that opened in the Ren Cen in the late 70s) |

Well, I'm sure it would be a desination with suburban shops. And this is 2006. It's not so much that I'm afraid that it wouldn't work, but that it doesn't belong anywhere within the old Grand Boulevard loop, and particularly at Woodward and the Fisher. |

I think a lifestyle center will be a hell of a lot better than a strip mall...at least there is some form of urbanity in a lifestyle center. And, as far as retail failing to occupy the buildings in the CBD, it is because there are many different property owners that don't want to cooperate to bring in a cohesive type of shopping district. This property on Woodward & Fisher will be controlled by one single developer/landlord |

Actually, "lifestyle center" is a euphemism for outdoor, suburban mall. Central Detroit can do a helluva lot better than that starting by building storefronts along Woodward at this area and to the north. The city can build lifestyle centers to its hearts content...outside of the Grand Boulevard loop, IMO. But, since it's all just a rumor, at the moment, and since the particular part I'm arguing against is not even part of that rumor, it doesn't really matter at the moment. I'm pretty sure the city and developers have much more appropriate (i.e. more grand) plans for the area than a suburban lifestyle center that would work in Novi...oh, wait... |

I saw this brief article tonight in Crains. "Masonic Temple Association looking for real estate partner The Masonic Temple Association of Detroit is in negotiations to add a real estate partner with hospitality and entertainment expertise to assist in operating the Detroit Masonic Temple. James Barber, executive director, said the association seeks a partner that could help attract shows and events in addition to more meetings business. The association is talking to interested groups who would bring financial backing, Barber said. The association has a goal to make a deal within 90 to 120 days. Total annual expenses are about $2.5 million, Barber said. Energy and insurance costs have driven up overhead. The 550,000-square-foot site includes two theaters." http://www.crainsdetroit.com/c gi-bin/article.pl?articleId=29 024 |

Let us not forget that a little north of this site that the Masons were to build a very grand hotel and convention center(roughly 6 blocks north of this location). The plans have been on the table for some years and I think now may just be the perfect time to break into the sceen with their development. This site is much larger than the one their sign once sat on. |

itsjeff, please elaborate ... God Bless the Detroit's Masonic Temple. You search for a photo of 'masonic temple' on Google Images and the first thing you see is Detroit's temple. You almost get a glimpse of a citys importance by seeing their Masonic Temple ... The Chicago Masonic Temple was once a sight to behold ... no longer there. Detroit's Temple must be one of the largest outside of Los Angeles ... |

The Masons claim the Detroit Masonic Temple as the world's largest. The only claim to fame for Los Angeles is that their Shriner's Auditorium (at 6,717 seats) is larger than the 5,000 seat Masonic Temple Theatre (although only 4,600 seats are used for shows). I assume that the Chicago Masonic Temple Building must still be standing, since its' theatre was the Oriental Theatre, today known as the Ford Center for the Performing Arts. Supposedly there were 22 floors to the Chicago temple. Maybe they are office space today. Don't know. On a pathetic note... Chicago's gloriously restored Ford Center of the Performing Arts is the flagship of the "Ford Center" chain, with other theatres in Vancouver, Toronto and NYC.... but not Detroit. |

A lightbulb just went off in my head.... Lets see. Nederlander wanted to build an upscale mall at property he owns at the fairgrounds. That deal seems to be stuck in the horse manure out there. Nederlander rents the Masonic for broadway style productions. See where I'm gonig with this? Nederlander might be involved in some sort of purchace of the Masonic along with a residential/retail component off Woodward at I-75. Well - What do you all think? |

Andy, according to Theatre Historic Society the 1926 built Oriental Theatre was built into a building that housed masonic lodges above. All that Wikipedia says is that a building called Masonic Temple was torn down in 1939. Perhaps they moved out earlier than 1939 into the building that houses the Oriental? After all they had to move somewhere! |

I hope there is no mall-like retail involved at either midtown site that is rumored to have a huge project. I predict a lifestyle center or a mall would fail miserably in midtown or downtown. There just isn't the critical mass of middle class in the city anymore and why would anyone travel from the suburbs when they can get the same stores at Somerset, Great Lakes Crossing or Novi (aka World Retail Center) Leave the malls for the suburbs. Even the lifestyle center in wealthy, burgeoning Novi hasn't been overwhelmingly successful. It's also a magnet for petty crimes and fights, don't know why that is though. I could be wrong though. Who knows why places like Chicago, San Francisco, and New York City have incredibly successful retail districts with rents several hundred dollars per square foot. IMO, SE Michigan is too provincial and divided to ever focus on one place to be the "it" place. Too bad for us. Even a small city like Indianapolis has a successful downtown mall. |

I think a lifestyle mall with a grocery store, starbucks, panera, GAP, Urban Outfitters, etc...to cater to the downtown residents would be very successful. Forget the Somerset type of stores, we need something for the residents. |

As someone who reads this site everyday hoping to hear about news about that very area, the area bounded by Woodward and the Fisher, I really wish the ItsJeff would clue us in. Until he does, I'm going with a Hockey arena with A hotel and other retail surrounding it so you can barely even tell that their is a hockey arena submerged amongst all of the retail and residential. By the way, this, to me, is the most intruiging area because if it is built properly it connects downtown to Cass Corridor. Walkable streets. Viberant areas. Ahh.... |

The synopsis of Chinatown from imdb.com "Hollis Mulwray is a chief engineer of the water department. Ida Sessions, pretending to be his wife Evelyn, asks P.I. JJ Jake Gittes to investigate his adulterous ways. Jake takes photos of Hollis with a young lady. Hollis then turns up murdered, which Jake decides to investigate. Jake finds more than he was looking for. He discovers a plot to buy cheap, unwatered land for low prices, water the land, and sell it for millions of dollars. The plot is masterminded by one Noah Cross, who is Evelyn's father and Hollis' one-time business partner. His investigation leads him to an affair with Evelyn and a discussion with Noah Cross, both of whom seem curiously interested in the girl Hollis was seen with." Maybe someone is going to water that area and sell it for millions? Is it going to be a huge water something or other? Maybe a lake? A huge lake. |

Late breaking news: The are plans in the works that will convert the former Donavan / Sanders site at the Fisher Freeway and Woodward into an empty field. In 7-10 years, Mike Ilitch will convert it into a landscaped surface parking lot using public funds. |

From information that I was privvy to it be a mega development of proportions never seen since the Ren Cen Broke ground! It will be a combination of: AMC/Star Magic Johnson cinema complex with restaurants and some retail, including a cheesecake factory, HoB, possibly a Planet Hollywood, and a Banana Republic. Rock Financial plans on relocating all of there employees onto the site in a 35 stotry tower to be built over the retail portion, with an adjoining tower that will house Honda's entire North American operation HQ.

Michael Jackson and Don Barden are going to build an indoor amusement park! Seriously though, I'm hoping for a new convention center or a project that will build on the synergy of the surrounding entertainment district. |
