At a time when budget cuts are forcing the City of Detroit to close rec centers and cut recreation programs for young people, two local pinch-hitters in the world of youth sports -- Think Detroit and the Police Athletic League -- have merged, creating a new agency that serves 13,000 children. Among the agency's goals is to expand fund-raising and increase the $2.5-million budget to $3 million; train the agency's 1,500 volunteer adult coaches in a new curriculum that uses sports to help young people build character, and find a permanent home that could serve as a flagship recreation facility. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060330/NEW S01/603300568 |

In my experience, Think Detroit really is a first-rate organization. The hoops leagues were already merged this winter and they were well-run. Baseball, with more organizational challenges, will be interesting this summer. |
