After 46 Years, the Mercury Coffee Shop on Michigan Avenue at Military in West Dearborn is closing. The rumors say a Walgreens will take its place. This is yet another old landmark in Dearborn cleared for "progress". Said Deep has more coverage on his site Has anybody here ever been to the Mercury Coffee Shop? |

Are you kidding me? The Merc is closing? My Grandmother and Uncle would take me there all the time when I was a kid. I always would get a chocolate shake there. From going time to time, we got to know some of the people who worked there. Particularly, a red-headed woman named Virginia. We'd always wonder if her wig was screwed on tight enough. |

The whole building is going. Same fate as Powers Hamburgers, and the historic Standard Oil gas station.

They tried to make the new BP station look similar to this one, but it looks really terrible. Sorry I don't have a pic of the new station. |

I have to hand it to the gas station owners, how many gas stations do you see today that put a lot of extra money into actually having good design? No, it's not an exact replica, but it's pretty darn close. The new structure and site plan allowed them to make much better use of the lot and generate more revenue. My only problem with the place is the canopy over the gas pumps. That is really dumb looking. |

The Mercury Motel is one of the few Guggi buildings in the area. It probably does a marginal business as a motel, but the architecture, including the sign, are one of a kind. This will be a big loss to the area. |

My first meal at the Merc was 35 years ago, my last was last week. Used to work across the street at Muirheads and got real familiar with their cheeseburger deluxe; breakfast on the weekends won't be the same...(progress) |

When I was courting Mrs. MC5rules, she lived right around the corner from the Mercury. I had some great hangover breakfasts there...I'm gonna miss that place. |
