The Preservationists vs. The Demolition Crews What is the final score of Downtown's buildings after the big Superbowl clean-up; exactly what was lost forever to the wreckers and was refurbished/restored in a lasting way? Examples: Lost: Madison-Lennox Statler Gained: Kales |

A co-worker in Manhattan, not knowing that I was a native Detroiter, saying the day ofter the Super Bowl: "...and Detroit looked great! I never knew they had such a cool downtown area." We'd be hard-pressed to hear those words out of an East Coast mouth under any other circumstance, unless they actually visited the D in person. The Ren Cen's get-up with the 'XL' wrap, the powerful, sweeping 'strong-arms' lights, along with downtown's general makeover, made a great impression on TV viewers. ...And the fact that most national news outlets didn't choose to capitalize on the negative aspects of Detroit throughtout Super Bowl week, made for a great showing. It's the best publicity that Detroit's had in my memory. However, it remains to be seen how much of this 'moment in the sun' will ultimately translate into cash-in-pocket for the city... |

Nice civility. Turn this forum into a strictly "what have you done for me lately" type of place and see what quality of posters you get. Newbie? Look at my registration date and you'll see I've been reading this forum for a bit longer than you might think. As far as a stupid question is concerned I did think this site pertained to ruins, the way Detroit lost them, and the ways to bring them back; a metaphor for the entire city and the people who live in, work in, and visit it. Or for those who just love the place and want to hear other's views on it and how it is changing. Or, that is likely a stupid response in your eyes, Mr. Merchantgander. |
