Yeah, I heard the tape on the Mitch Albom show, it was pretty horrifying. The operator asked this woman if she was a mental case. It didn't sound like a prank to me... |

What a shame. This is very disturbing to know that the people that we are supposed to depend on when we need them most don't take us seriously. |

when I was shot at on Wyoming, the 911 operator asked me 'what do you want me to do about it? you have to go down to the precinct to make a police report'. <yawn> this is status quo in disfunctional-land |

Unfortunately, for years many folks have called with phoney or non 911 type calls and this has gotten some phone operators to disbelieve those who are asking for help. People are suffering and dying because of people who cry "wolf". Phone operators shouldn't be deciding who may live or die though. They should just put the call through. Citizens will just keep paying for false runs and lawsuits. |

There are techniques that can be employed to determine if the call is a prank, none of those were used in either of the recent cases. In the case of the child, the operator could have called him back to see who answered. If the child answers the phone, more than likely the call is legit. Feiger was given the excuse by the city that the operator "couldn't understand the boy" which the tape proves is not the case as she responds to everything he is saying. I also heard the initial reaction from the department was the operator was great at her job and no action would be taken. |

Three steps to success. 1. Settle the lawsuits immediately. 2. Enter into receivership, which will assumedly lead to step 3.. 3. Shake out the crap that serves as 'leadership'. a fish rots from the head, etc.. |

Fieger was on WJR for an extended time during the Smith program today. He gave a fairly convincing story of being stonewalled by the Police, such as their refusing that such calls were made, perhaps losing or destroying tapes, etc. I was preoccupied at the time, so I missed many of the details. Maybe somebody also heard that interview. |

I listen to Detroit's 911 operators take calls quite frequently. Generally speaking, they're horrid. I doubt the administration of the center that handles quality assurance and record retention is any better than the calltakers themselves. Its a miracle these kinds of calls don't get brought to light more often. Unfortunately, I know this is not the first time gross mishandling has caused a tragedy. |
