Does anyone remember the name of the mansion that was located south of Jefferson and north of the Detroit River that was given to the Hari Krishna’s back, let me see there was a lot of booze and drugs, but, in the 1970s, maybe?

I wish I had more detail I could write but all I know is we always had a good time there before the Hari Krishna's got ahold of it!

Bingo!

We use to have a great time there. I wonder if anyone has any photos of it. Better yet, I wonder if still exists?

The final sentence of the website reads:

Historic sites. This building is presently listed on no historic registries.

Can that be????

I think one of the Fisher kids got mixed-up with Hari Krishna and donated the mansion to them.

It's an absolute gorgeous place. We were amazed at the size and grandeur of the place. It's almost so well hidden within the city I doubt if many people even know it's there. I ate at Govinda's once there and the food was pretty good too. I vaguely remember them having peacocks roaming the grounds too.

its still alive and rocking. the temple has actually expanded the size of the prayer rooms, but still have many problems due to poor construction of the actual mansion. seemingly, once a year, some sort of flooding, rain, etc. causes a tremendous amount of damage to the structure. In the summer, peacocks are present on the grounds, and there used to be fish in small ponds at the entrance of the grounds from the parking lot, but due to expenses, i am not sure if that has been kept up.

While the Hare Krishna movement has been criticized for some its actions in the 70's, its place in Detroit has been rather solid. It has provided food for neighbors, homeless or not, and has cleaned up the area around the complex.

It seems to me that there use to be some kind of connection between the Fisher Mansion and Garwood in his "Glory Days" in the Unlimited Hydroplane Races of yesteryear.

Or, as I think about it more, it seems that there might have been a Garwood Mansion near the Fisher Mansion. Can anyone help with this insight and/or confusion?

Alfred Brush Ford (son of the recently deceased Josephine Ford) and Nancy Reuther (daugher of the late labor leader Walter Reuther) were both into the Hari Krishna movement (don't know if they still are). But they provided the funding for the purchase and maintenance of the Fisher Mansion.

The Gar Wood mansion burned to the ground about 30 years ago. IIRC, it was located on Grayhaven Island, site of a gated condo complex today, right behind the Fisher Mansion.

Thank you, Gistok!

As you mentioned these two items, "Alfred Brush Ford (son of the recently deceased Josephine Ford) and Nancy Reuther (daugher of the late labor leader Walter Reuther) were both into the Hari Krishna movement (don't know if they still are)." and "The Gar Wood mansion burned to the ground about 30 years ago."

Now that you mentioned these two items it jogged my memory because I lived those experiences 30+ years ago during my young drinking and drugging days. It was just one big drunken fest after another at the Garwood Mansion and the Fisher Mansion. But, it's been too many years ago for me to have remembered on my own.

Now, if I could just find some photos of the Garwood Mansion. I have some really great stories about the Garwood Mansion and Garwood's heyday racing days. I'll have to collect my thoughts and concerning them.

Many thanks again, Gistok!

Livedog2, try

https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/18968/19632.html

also there was an older thread that doesn't pop up on the forum search anymore where someone shared some old party stories from the Garwoods hippie days (before the bikers trashed the place). Try using the internet wayback and search for posts from "=SC=" and thethread should pop up. Really good stuff ...

Livedog, do you remember the neighbor with the biiig guns mounted on his roof?

yay detroit!

Livedog2,
I thought you meant the Garwood from your description. A former poster on this forum, Skipper of the infamous "Skipper's Rule" would be the person that could give you much info as he was in the center of it all.

Alas, I haven't heard from him since the Dally in the Alley.

Does anyone know the basis of Gar Wood's fortune?

You don't get to go on vacation like this working on the line at Ford's!

Skipper is still around but I don't think he's posting. Saw him at the All Stars of Detroit opening at the Cass Cafe about a month ago.

You people on this site are amazing. I use to think I knew a lot about Detroit in my 60 years, especially the obscure parts of it, but I learn so much from all of you everyday. It is a thrill and an honor to talk with so many people that are so knowledgeable about the city of my birth and at the center of my heart.

It seems so little to say but thank you!

I have been inspired by Detroitblog to do some "Urban Exploration" and photography, tomorrow, on the eastside. I hope to have some photos to post that's if I can stay out of Harm's Way. I am going to be doing it with an "old" childhood friend and partner in adventure. I'll let you know how it went.

Unfortunately, I missed by one day getting into Beth Olem Cemetery in Hamtramck, the visitation was last Sunday but my planning was off a day. I have roots and history in that cemetery but there's always September 17th to look forward to.

I have some classic Gar Wood stories from my father about Gar Wood's racing days. But, I've got to sit down and think about them and put them on paper to share with this thread.
