I can't remember the name of the group. I remember there's a building on Jefferson with a Heart or Heart & Dagger or something. Its a club of professionals who join and perform theatrical skits, etc. Whats the name? |

The Players is all men but then they have an all women's group called the Fine Arts Society and a co-ed group too. You have to be invited by a member to go to any shows, but the theater is beautiful! I've done a few plays there so if you have any more questions feel free to email me at jpierce@insidedetroit.org |

Yes, and they have a men's room. So they must be sexist, too. |

The Players Club was the site of Preservation Wayne's annual meeting a few years ago, and the place was awesome! Even though it is mainly a theatre, one gets the impression of being in a medieval Romanesque cathedral, with all the massive columns. Even the spiral stairs going up to the shelf balcony have a medieval look and feel to it. A really cool place. (Message edited by Gistok on April 22, 2006) |

I've attended a couple of PW meetings at The Players Club. What a great building!!! I was glad of the opportunity to take photos inside!! A couple years ago, at the annual Local History Conference, Maryjean Levering gave a talk on the history of The Players Club, including the building. A book is in the works! |

Is it worth $600 to join? What does that mean? Networking, friends, you can be in plays? |

I am not a member but have enjoyed their productions for 45 years. I will be there on May 12 for "three one-act plays".(Tux optional). They do a wonderful job, and are part of Detroit's history. This City would be saddened if they closed shop and went to the suburbs. So many oither institutions have. Detroit is fortunate to have them a viable entity rather than another boarded-up ruin. |

It's almost too bad that this little treasure wasn't in the theatre district. About the same size as the Gem, they could have used it for other productions, and kept the place more lively than the occasional performance by the Players. Probably much of that $600 fee goes towards building maintenance and utilities. |
