Apparently a completely separate group of editorialist worked on this endorsement for the Snews (I'm refering to their endorsement of sprawl yesterday). Here's one quote that runs contrary to their sprawl endorsement: "Renewing the SMART property tax is a no-brainer despite grumbling from some suburbs." http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.d ll/article?AID=/20060421/OPINI ON01/604210318/1007 |

It's nice to hear the SMART millage getting this support this early. Having SMART fall apart because of a lack of funding will only make mass transit in Detroit even worse. |

Actually, I think quite the opposite, Bob. The only way to get a regional authority going is to totally dismantle both DDOT and SMART instead of trying to merge them. Both are flawed and ineffective authorities, and this needs to be started from scratch because of that. DARTA was a good start, but vengeful Engler vetoed it out of spite. Again, the only way I believe that a regional authority can be formed is if both SMART and DDOT are dissolved. They just have too much baggage between them. BTW, "Snews" is the knickname for MSU's paper, the State News. |
